A response... - From: ...Of such immense size
Hi Yvonne Sorry for the ridiculously late reply but I don't check my travelblog much these days. I hope any info I give isn't too late. Unfortunately I didn't stumble across any decent places to eat while in Belarus. They were mainly old soviet style serveries which weren't very good. However in Minsk I went to a nice cafe/restaurant on the main street. I can't remember what it was called but it seemed in that main area there were plenty of places to try. As far as telling people why I was there, I just told them the truth, I was curious to see it and I am the type of traveller who will go anywhere. I didn't say anything about being part of the old soviet bloc as I didn't know how people felt about it. I think if you're going there out of curiosity, that's your best excuse. If there's anything I can't stress enough, it's to familiarise yourself with some Russian. Honestly, the language barrier was the most strenuous part of trip. Anyway I hope this helps if it's not too late and I hope you have a great trip

A question... - From: ...Of such immense size
So where can you eat, where there will be good traditional Belorussian/Russian food? I also wish to know what exactly you said to everyone who asked you why you came to their country. I am going soon and don't want to offend anyone. Thanks for your time and your report.

Hi Alex. Thanks for your feedback.. I wouldn't like to think I was givng the wrong information as I usually try and get it pretty right but in the midst of the hustle and bustle of travel there's always chances of getting things wrong.. Can you tell me what I got wrong so we can all know??

I have just checked a couple of facts related to Minsk in the net. I was really surprised, that many facts the author gave in the report appeared to be totally wrong. Isn't it a strange report....hmmmm

Estonia - From: Estonia got medieval on my ass
Had the great fortune of getting to go to Estonia for a military training event. Fell head over heels in love with the place and it's people. Very affordable. Being there was like stepping back in time. Would recommend anyone spend some time in Tallinn, Narva, and Paldiski...while in Paldiski ensure you take mosquito repellant, we almost got eaten alive. Definitely a country I'd love to go visit again.

Explanation for Die Belgrader - From: The other side
First of all, why are you calling me an American? I'm NOT American, I'm Australian, so I have no idea what its like to carry an American Passport or anything about the righteous/mesianic/judgemental genetics that Americans apparently have and I don't have Tivo! Secondly I never asked anyone to "explain" themselves to me. When I travel I like to educate myself on things and I wanted to find out more about the Siege of Sarajevo. The Bosnians were happy to tell me all about it but I didn't want to just have stories and opinions from one side. I was interested to hear a few things from Serbians also. I do this to avoid having "biased, pretentious and unchecked ideas of the right or wrong that has to be pre-applied on that place/people". I think that opinions and experiences from locals are far more interesting than anything that could be read in a history book. That is the connection. If you had bothered to read my previous blog from Bosnia, then you would've seen that. I wasn't out to insult anyone or push for anymore detail than anyone was willing to give and I didn't intrusively harass people for anything. I always tread lightly with these types of matters as I understand they are sensitive issues. I admit that the way I wrote about it being a problem to not get information may not have been the best way to put it but I wasn't hassling people like a journalist or anything. I don't have any relation to the event I just have an interest in history. I think the main reason people were sending me so much hate mail is because of the less than flattering view I gave the city. Perhaps I was comparing too much or maybe it was because I wasn't in the best mood when I wrote the blog. I again admit is probably was a little harsh and I can fully understand why locals would be upset. However I'm still not going to change my opinion and say I liked the place. So sorry all Serbians find me offensive but this is travelblog, a place where a traveler can write their opinions and their experiences of travel. If you don't like it, don't read it. Just out of curiosity Die Belgrader, you say you're both a native Belgrader and a shitty American citizen, where is it you live? So that's it, I don't feel I need to explain myself any further.

Die Belgrader
Think , Mr. Nomad ... think! - From: The other side
Well, in the best intention and hope, Dear Mr. Nomad that this comment from a native of Belgrade, who also happen to be a fellow, shitty american citizen (you know how it is - carrying the US passport around the world in this century) , will not be deleted, I will take a freedom to remin you on something. When you come in to the completely foreign country, which you do not have any social, cultural or blood ties with, and all that with a thoroughly peculiar (or, it may come from the righteous/mesianic/judgemental genetics most americans are born with) biased, pretentious and unchecked ideas of the right or wrong that has to be pre-applied on that place/people, putting them all in the default position to "explain" themselve to you ... well, then you could hardly avoid being call the unfortunate names! Since you already went in that direction, can you please explain to the respected readers of this post what is the relation between Serbian and Bosnian Muslim history in Sarajevo with your Belgrade travel post? Do you have some personal agenda to take care of? Are you married (or girlfriended by) to a Bosnian Muslim? Are you somebody involved professionaly (NGO?) with a politics in the Balkans? Is the 90 % muslim albanian quasi-state of Kosovo next cross you will try to crussify the christan Serbs on? Please explain yourself, we are eagerly waiting for your answer. PS: Please don't go to Greece and try to "explore" the "other side" of Greek - Macedonian issue. It just wouldn't be healthy. You are an American ... stick to your TIVO!!!

I have now been to Belarus probably 5 or 6 times now... and still its an interesting place to visit...my advice to any one considering a visit is to definitely learn a little russian especially how to pronounce the alphabet to string the letters together ...communication if only basic will at least get better assistance from the locals...I really enjoyed reading this blog...Happy Travels

The guy who talked about phone company card is very wrong. I'm Estonian and they are very cheap here. He is wrong about the public phones also. True, most of Estonian are using cellphones now, but still.. You can get a public phone card with 1-2 Euros, so i don't see how is that a ripoff. Hope you liked Estonia! Peace!

Salam Alikom Cam my name is Usama from Oman, I was searching the web looking for some photos of Bahla fort, I found your photos in Google and guess what these photos are the best photos of Oman's forts! thank you for all the nice words about Oman and its people, it would be great if you added something about Oman beaches as we are blessed with the cleanest and most beautiful beaches on the planet. by the way, in Oman women are also "free' (what we pay for them is a gift that is used for buying gold clothes ) half of the working force in Oman are women, they own businesses and drive cars and they are head of minisrties, ambassadors, CEOs in big companies :)

Well thanks for actually putting your email and name now Ivan, well done. The reason I deleted your last comment is because you just abused me for no reason. Real men dont just abuse people for no reason. I get all sorts of comments of abuse but at least they have a reason unlike you. Just now in your comment you said "In my humble opinion you are a fag" but why? you havent asked me anything or disagreed with anything in my blog. Stop wasting my time and if you're going to take the time in writing to me, make it worth while otherwise I will just delete the comment again.

its NOT eastern europe - From: It's official... I'm in EASTERN europe
Somehow I just came up to your journal and as I'm a latvian myself it's pretty interesting to glance over your stuff. I like that you felt kinda the same as I did there. It's sorta cool feeling to know that I'm not the only one. Yes, Riga at the very moment is one of the crappiest cities out there, everyone seems to rave about the place but I just can't see any significance. It's just the place as anywhere else. I mean, the Old Town and this art nouveau thing is awesome but it's definitely not enough to call it a great city. Basically, the place has some sorta potential but at the moment they don't seem to use it. Look at Tallinn. Or Vilnius. Both pretty great places compared to Riga, although Riga is the biggest one. Tallinn and Vilnius have their own pretty cool and neat downtown, I can't find anything like that in Riga though. Well, I believe- someday, hopefully, itll be a great place worth visiting. That's about it. I left Riga not so long ago. I can't stand it there. I was too depressed to carry on there. Now I'm happy again though, you see! About that eastern europe comment... You're right man, but it's culturally ,NOT GEOGRAPHICALLY eastern europe.!! You can ask any lecturer in any part of the world and he will tell you that it's northern europe, because of the location. Eastern europe starts from Poland. Even Lithuania lawfully counts as northern europe. Yes, Latvia at the moment CULTURALLY is eastern europe, owing to the long lasting occupation from the east which brought in anything from that part of the world. Nowadays only Estonia seems to fight these influences off so yeah, I can't say anything. So you can say culturally but definitely not geographically! Have you heard about the livs? Didn't you know they were of finno-ugric branch? They're indigenous here and are as much northerners as finns and latvians. We're all the same and we've always been and will always be a part of the north not east. As long as you keep mentioning this eastern europe thing, this will never fade. But you don't want it, right? Well, hehe that's about it. Hope you having a good time wherever you are, keep it up. cheers!

I'm sorry you feel that way ANONYMOUS. I write about my experiences, the things I see and the people I meet. I can't recall writing anything "offensive and repulsive" maybe you could enlighten me on that eh?. I find it so funny that you choose to write about your disgust in me and hide behind the name ANONYMOUS! Maybe if you feel so strongly you should have some guts and send me a private message with your name and email so I know who I am disgusting. I'm very sorry my stories don't appeal to you but if you don't like it, don't read it. This is a blog for my family, friends and myself, not for the gutless, opinionated casual reader who thinks they know all about me because they read "some of my blogs" You don't know me one bit (thankfully) and I don't intend to please everybody. I am sorry you had such a horrifieing first experience with Riga, that was just a result of bad coincidences. You arrived with a bus from tallinn, instead of taking the main street str8 down to the city center - the driver took less busy road around through the ungly soviet block districst (Belieev me Tallinn and Vilnius have even more of it) than landene on the bus station which is situation next to market on the other side of railway station - "little moscow" we call that area. 99% people living there are russian immigrants and thus brought there some of the problems of their country. Lots of drug use, poverty, alcohol. the true Riga, the one everybody refers to the city center was on the oposite direction. You discovered it later and logically your opinion changed. Sadly you were visiting on sunday - that is the worst day to visit Riga. People leave the city or stay home so it is very quite. The best day visit Riga is thursday and friday - city is bustling, full with energy and atmosphere especially on some celebrations, young people on the streets in bars and cafes - these moments are why Riga is celebrated and loved by everybody. Big bustling sophisticaed and elegant place. But I am happy you liked it anyway.

Well Helsinki is even more to the east than Riga I dont think when visiting Helsinki you will refere to it as Eastern Europe. You did not ment it completely geographically. Latvia Riga is Norther Europe has always been, culturall, mentality, religion culture. Yes cold war split us from our true neighbours and relatives, but thanks got it is over. And this shamefull practice of spliting Europe in east and west purelly along the iron curtain border is a contination of the occupation. So I can understand why people in Riga, Prague or Zagreb dont like to be refered to as Eastern Europe, we simply are not.

Lithuania - From: ...And now we play the waiting game
It was actually very interesting to read what impressions my country leaves to travelers like you are. I am very proud representative of my country and read this story with smile on my face. Because much of what you say looks like true, just little bit false mirror:) The thing is that yes, people of this nation are, lets say, "weird" enough - they are modest and sometimes pesimistic, but incredibly warm, sentimental, hospitable and sensitive at the same time. Of course it is dificult to form a clear view of us if you didnt get to know us closer, only met two old non speaking english vilige women, two wenches in a province information center, taxi driver and hotel staff:))) Joking of course. But the point is that we usually not rush to "lay our lifes down on your plate", but once you get friends - it is forever. People who you met must be tired enough because of ages lasting historical trials, challenges and changes, thats why i can to justify them saying "why Lithuania?" But i want to ensure that is not national character and there are many of us who are proud citizens of this country, fans of our traditions and history:) Lithuania quickly moves forward with fast growing economy, with active people and it gives valuable contribution to the world with its rich history and culture. Next time you here, you necessarily have to visit Curonian Spit with its unique nature - narror penninsula with the Baltic Sea on one side and Kursiu lagoon, dunes and old fishmen villages, you should visit Birzai region and see phenomenon of subsiding slumping holes, visit pot town Klaipeda and night life of Vilnius, etc. Anyway was funny to read about your feelings being here:) And you are allways wellcome back to yellow-braided Lithuania:))) p.s. those two you met in Prague must be really lost children or some minority without self respect!:)))

Don't buy the official phone company cards, they're a ripoff, but get a VOICENET or something similar - you call on a special number and theen dial the number you wan't to call to... But public phones will be removed in a few years anyway, since they are unprofitable. Noone uses them.

No ex-soviet buildings and things in Finland - From: There is a heat wave here in Finland
Finland was under Russian rule during 1800 and declared its independence on 6. December in 1917. Finland has never any part of the Soviet Union, so therefore we do not have any ex-soviet stuff here. We have built all the ugly stuff ourselves!! The "Soviet-inspired" churches might be orthodox, at least one in the pictures (Uspenski Cathedral with the golden globes).

Hmm your miss guided idiot!!!! - From: TIJUANA BABY!!!
Dear Pilot. 1) How dare you call me a Racist. I never ONCE in my blog, or any of my blogs, was racist to ANYONE! 2) Yes, we went to Revolution Avenue. We only had half a day there. Our original plan was to spend the night and perhaps travel further south. Time restricted this plan so a half day trip was all we could manage. For the record we did manage to get to a shopping centre in the area, not much I know but something.. There were many things I wanted to see in Tijuana but never got a chance. If I go back I WILL spend more time. 3) Sorry but my comment is true. Revolution Avenue is a smoggy, stinky, culture clash of a rats nest. I was not really referring to Tijuana as a whole because I didn't see it. This is a blog based on my experiences!! not a documentary going into huge depth about a city. So next time read properly and understand before you lash out. Do me a favour, if you choose to call me something have a decent reason to, and send me a damn email and don't be so gutless hiding behind an anonymous comment.

You racist piece of trash!!!!!! - From: TIJUANA BABY!!!
I'm from Tijuana, and I basically don't like your comments about this city. Most americans think that Tijuana is just going across the border and get to Revolution avenue (Just Revolution Avenue?????) There's more to Tijuana than just crossing over the border to get drunk and get back across to the U.S. and get arrested by the american officials because of being drunk. The Revolution Avenue is the lowest unclassiest place of the city, Sodoma & Gomorra type, no question about it. I've been there and I'll tell you, is not Disneyland. But there are a lot of places in Tijuana to visit. To name a few : Just 15 minutes west of the "Revolution Avenue" there's the beach zone (called it Playas de Tijuana)with big shopping malls, movie theaters, the bull ring by the sea; east of the "Hell hole", just 5 minutes, is the river zone with big museums, shopping malls, exquisit restaurants, football and baseball fields, luxurious hotels, just to name a few. So, per your comment abou Tijuana : "A nice little smoggy, stinky, culture clash of a rat's nest that Americans seem to love so much (mostly under 21's students)", I suggest that you take another trip and avoid getting drunk at the "ugliest" place on earth, and enjoy something different. I'm sure you will not be dissapointed.

interesting - From: The worst first night... EVER!
I guess if you had a local friend you would have had a much easier and more pleasent time. and I hope you know by now that no one pays by the meter, the meter rate was fixed some time in the 70s al hussein mosque supposedly has a piece of Al Hussein's body buried in it (that's what you saw people touching while praying). while Egypt is a mostly Suni muslim country for most of it's islamic history it was Shiia muslim, many traditions and ceremonies (frowned upon by suni scholars) are still present specially among the lower economical classes. the mix of beliefs and cultures is even more intricate and more interesting than you could possibly imagine the protest I can guess if you tell us the date. Cairo in one sense means the victorious city but in another sense it also means the tyrannical city. and for that alone we love it.

Can't believe U were in Oz on Monday & have already experienced all this, and finding access to internet. When U visit a country, you reeeally see it. We are reminded of the Friday "Calls to Prayers" when we lived in Malaysia. Yes,Trace, it's exciting, but scary too!! Just buckle up for the ride, Anne & Garry. Think of you often, Cam. Much love from Yr Adelaide Family xx

I'M IN VANG VIENG RIGHT NOW - From: What the hell were we doing in Vietnam?!?!?!?!
Vang Vieng is a great place, this is my second time here is 2 months. I use it to take little breaks form Bangkok, where I've been for 4 months. You can't understand the beauty of the place until you have been here. Your pictures are pretty spot on in capturing the fel of the whole place. I find Vientiene a very boring place, but its each to his own. Great pictures. I'll get my mates onto your site to check it out, as my pictures are rubbish. Just one thing, if you are talking to a brit (I am from London) and you don't know your geography, and your american, its best to stay quiet about it. Otherwise you are really reinforcing some stereotypes we have about the USA. Great site. Love it.

surprisingly.... - From: Bored in Phuket
hiya.. just happened to come across ur blog... Maya.. remains as nice as ever... im quite surprised that da damages are still kinda intact since almost a year... from your pic header "Tsunamis damage again" ... I was back in Phuket in Feb & March 05... its seems like the damages were salvaged quick enough..(i guess mainly in Patong). I was always staying put in Karon.. da quieter area. I love having a great massage by the beach & enjoyin a coconut drink & sun-nathing without fail..... Perhaps i had much more fun there... with the local friends around.. bringing me around & experience the local life... went fishing out in da sea like da locals (for my bbq diner), having local steamboat @ super cheap rate of about 100baht per person wic u won't find @ Patong, watching pple water-skiing @ da man-made lake in Kathu ... & da night market in Phuket Town (similar to da weekend Chatuchak in Bangkok).. nite life @ patong til 3am & jumped to another nitespot wic open til morning.. (i can't recall da name of da nitespot but it has a safari deco wic is nicey.. thumbs up!) I have also visited da Phuket Fantasea showcasing da Thai culture.. with real animals performing... its was quite interesting when 1 of da elephants actually did its "business" on stage while performing... da laser effects during da performances & da acrobats were cool too... i just fell in love with Phuket.. To noe more about Thai.. check out @ www.thaichatbox.com :) over here, u c a group of thai "lovers" ~ pple who simply fell in love with Thailand.. Hope you will have a more enjoyable trip next time. :) Cheers Lauren aka Doaw Singapore p/s: *oops* my apology if im a intruder of ur blog..
