Friday, Day 11 After Jackie read this blog she said that she was surprised that I omitted one of the best things we have seen on the trip up to now. I completlely left out comments on Burg Eltz, the beautiful castle just above Cochem. So, I am issuing an edit on this day. After breakfast we headed for Burg Eltz, the castle that R. Steves claims is his favorite in all of Europe. This castle has been in tact for 700 years. It is not on the Mosel River but in a thick forest a few miles north. In my mind it is the ultimate, and maybe the first, condomium. It seems that the three families lived together inside and had separate lives. There was a meeting room where they met to work out issues ... read more

Thursday, July 26 Our plans for the day were to drive to the village of Bacharach and ride a river boat down river to St. Goar, tour the ruins of Rheinfels Castle and return up river to our car. From there we planned to drive down to the Mosel River to find a hotel. The village of Cochem was our target. Once again we were lucky with outstanding weather. It was warm enough for shorts as we toured the Rhine. We had R. Steves guide book to tell us the history of each of about a dozen castles along this section of the river. In St. Goar, we took a shuttle up the mountain to the Rhinefels castle. It was enormous and amazing to see how mighty it once was and how it is now. R. ... read more

Wednesday-another great weather day Originally we had planned to spend two nights here but we discovered two reasons to reconsider. First, there was no air conditioning and second, our second floor window opened just above the square with folks walking, drinking, and even singing the night away. In Vienna, we prayed for hot weather and now got our prayers answered. It was about 90 degrees in our room that night. So, our plan today was to experience the famous Roman-Irish Bath (Friedrichsbad) here early and then to drive north towards the Rhine River Valley. The facility was built during the Roman Empire days. It uses the natural hot springs in the area for all the heating and hot baths. We had read all about this in the R. Steves guide book but were still a little ... read more

After the great day in the Ruette, Austria area, we had a new challenge. Before leaving the USA, I had booked rooms for the first eight nights of our trip. I also have rooms booked for the last week of the trip, three days in Normandy and four in Paris. But now, for the first time, we were having to decide before sleeping where we would be driving to the following day. Jackie recommended a change from six or seven one night stops (my plan), to driving longer days and spending at least two nights at each stop. So, I gave in. We decided to skip a stop in Zurich and Staufen and drive all the way to Baden-Baden for a two night stop. With some help from the R. Steves guide book, we found an ... read more

Sunday and Monday, Beautiful weather and great location makes for a happy couple. This blog covers two very fun days. After lots of rain in Vienna and Hallstatt, we got lucky. We drove from Hallstatt to Reutte in about three hours. The drive itself was wonderful. The scenary is out of a storybook or movie. We arrived about 1pm to our nice hotel in the center of this little town. As an aside, we discovered that our great rocket scientist, Werner von Braun, joined America at the end of WWII in this town. We loved the hotel and its owner, Hans. After a short rest we went out to see what we could do on our first afternoon here. The owner recommended that we ride a local cable car to the top of a nearby mountain ... read more

We got up early and drove south and west of Vienna to the mountain lake at Hallstatt. We had about 180 miles to drive and the weather, once again, was questionable. Fortunately, Heidi did her job and led us out of town without a problem. We arrived about 2pm at Hallstatt, which has been deemed a World Heritage Village. That's when our challenge began. The problem was the hotel was inside the "old town area" and was blocked off with a gate. Our guide book suggested that a guard would permit us to enter to drop our luggage. Well, that system has changed. There was no guard and no way to call the hotel. I parked about a mile away at a lot that had free hotel shuttles. That worked to get us there but the ... read more

Rain, rain go away! We had another busy and interesting day. We decided to follow a Rick Steves recommended city tour. We had our book and audio tapes with us and found them valuable to see so much in so little time. It would be easy to spend a week here visiting the museums and historical sites, not to mention all of the dining venues. The weather was overcast but not raining as we left the hotel. We started our walking tour at the Vienna Opera house. It is famous due to the various notable opera and ballet performers that have entertained there. English tour was about to start at 10am so we purchased tickets and waited inside the lobby for it. We met there another America couple with their teenage son there. They were from ... read more

Hi Friends, We started Thursday with a trip to the famous Melk Abbey. Although the abbey is just above the village, finding the parking lot was no easy task. In fact, we gave up after driving all through the village twice. We parked in public lot about half way up the hill and walked in. The place is amazing. First, it is huge. Second, it is old. It was established as a fortified Benedictine abbey in the 11th century. It was lost to fire only to be rebuilt in the 18th century. It is full of old stuff. The most amazing part of the abbey is the old library. It is full of lots and lots of old books. Then the church itself was stunning too. Lots of gold plated stuff. But the best was the ... read more

Today was Jackie's day. She was excited about finally getting to see her new car. We got up early and packed for the subway ride to the BMW Welt for the delivery. We always feel like we are in the TV program "Amazing Race" when we do these things. We feel success when we choose to take an alternative to "easy way" and find out our plan works. In this case, instead of taking a taxi we took the subway. And it worked. After checking in at the Welt and getting briefed on the various options, we got to see the car. Jackie was so happy that the colors she chose looked as good in person as they did in the book. We skipped the factory tour and drove out about noon. We programmed Heidi to ... read more

We have arrived! Due to a storm near the Atlanta airport, our flight was two hours late departing. That turned an eight hour flight into ten. But we were happy to be on the plane and on our way. The flight was uneventful although Jackie got much more sleep than I did. Our first adventure developed after clearing customs. We knew the name and address of our Munich hotel but not the neighborhood. The info that BMW sent us indicated that they would arrange for a limo to meet and take us to the hotel for only 110 euros (~$135). We decided that riding public transportation would be fun and much cheaper. Only one problem, where is the hotel? Fortunately, after some time, Jackie noticed that the hotel was only 150 meters from the main train ... read more
