Vienna to Hallstatt

We had a beautiful drive through the mountains but cloudy all day. It started raining on arrival in Hallstatt.

Jackie fixed a nice lunch on our balcony above the lake. Yes, it was wet and cool.
We got up early and drove south and west of Vienna to the mountain lake at Hallstatt. We had about 180 miles to drive and the weather, once again, was questionable. Fortunately, Heidi did her job and led us out of town without a problem. We arrived about 2pm at Hallstatt, which has been deemed a World Heritage Village.

That's when our challenge began. The problem was the hotel was inside the "old town area" and was blocked off with a gate. Our guide book suggested that a guard would permit us to enter to drop our luggage. Well, that system has changed. There was no guard and no way to call the hotel.

I parked about a mile away at a lot that had free hotel shuttles. That worked to get us there but the lot was 12 euros a day and we were told that it parking would be free. When we arrived at the hotel we were told that we should move the car to P2, from the P1 lot. I walked all the way back in the rain and moved the car. But by then I had overstayed the minimum time and had to pay

the full day fee anyway.

We think the village was beautiful and would have enjoyed so much but with the cold and rain it was hard. We decided if it was still raining the next morning we would leave. Sadly, that's what happened. We did not even get to do the famous salt mine over the village. Maybe next time.

This is a view of our hotel. We were on the third floor with a great view of the lake. Only problem, too much rain.

We loved this pear tree outlining this building.

We were surprised when we first saw these. Since then we have seen others. Quite impressive how the graves were individually honored with flowers. Most had candles which all were lit while we were there.

We are enjoying your trip vicariously.
Be safe. Eat plenty of sweets for us. I hear Austria has fabulous cream puff desserts. My grandfather came from Austria.
