Tuesday afternoon, May 22nd. We are back in Atlanta. Wow, what a trip! THE GREAT AMERICAN ROAD TRIP aka THE WINE, BEER & BOURBON ROAD TRIP. Our last leg was also the longest at 380 miles. As we departed Memphis, we made the mandatory drive to see Graceland. We decided that we were just too worn out to do the tour. So, we could not see much of the mansion. But we did see his airplanes which were on display across the road. There was not much else to report except that we drove I-22 in north-west Alabama for the first time. I thought the countryside along the road was beautiful. I would like to wrap up our trip with some statistics. Monday morning, May 20th, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. When we checked in last night at the hotel, I asked the check-in clerk what things we might see or do here before driving to Memphis. She confirmed that the movie "Gone Girl" was filmed here and that there was a route to see some of the filming sites. I also asked about Rush Limbaugh, since I knew this was his hometown. She quickly asked, "Are you a big conservative?" A little surprised, I answered yes. Then she told me that she attended Hillsdale College, a private university in Michigan. I told her that I had completed many of the Hillsdale College on-line classes. It is a small college but one of the best schools in the USA for study of the Constitution and American history. The hotel ... read more

Sunday morning, May 20. We started the day in St. Louis and had a lot of sites to see before we depart. I checked our location with my new app and noticed that we started today at 38.6 N, 90.2 W, with an elevation of 460.1Ft. After breakfast and loading our car, we set out on foot to visit the Gateway Arch. Jackie and I have traveled a lot around the world and I can say without hesitation that this structure is one of the most fascinating that we have seen. I took a lot of photos, see below, but there is no way to capture this. You have to come see this yourself. We took the tram ride to the top. It worried me a bit given my claustrophobia, but made it without a problem. ... read more

Saturday morning, May 19th, we departed from Oak Brook, Illinois heading to St. Louis. This would be one of our longest legs of the trip, about 270 miles. I researched the location of Route 66 before departing Atlanta. The route starts in Chicago but is pretty congested these days in the beginning. So, I waited until we reached Pontiac, Illinois before leaving I-55. We noticed right away that there was a Route 66 museum located here. I visited the museum while Jackie stayed in the car. I enjoyed what I saw and recommend it for anyone with an interest in this history. Since Jackie was still in the car, I grabbed a map and we drove about 20 miles along the Old Route 66. Wow, it is scenic but it doesn't take long to understand why ... read more

Friday, May 18th. We had fun today. We had a relatively short drive from Port Washington to downtown Chicago. Once again we altered our plans and decided to explore downtown before driving out to the suburbs to meet our friends. We drove along the coast and entered the Millennium Park Garage. It was below the Harris Theatre and adjacent to the Millennium Amphitheater. From there it is a short walk to the river. We took a 1.5 hour "Architecture Tour" on the Chicago River. It was very informative and relaxing. That is until the rain started. The city has seen a lot of development over the last 100 years and the architectural trends are apparent. Plus, it is not over. New projects along the river are still underway. One issue of note was the "river walk" ... read more

This is Wednesday night, in Marquette, Michigan. We are at the top of our trip. We are located at 46.55 North, 87.41 West. The elevation here is 754ft. We are at a higher elevation than over in Munising, which was at 600ft. In fact, I have learned that most of the Great Lakes are about elevation 600ft. We are above the 45th parallel. We passed a roadside marker near Leland, Michigan that indicated we were mid-way from the equator and the North Pole. That's a long way from home. Tomorrow, we will drive South for the first time on this trip. Our goal is Green Bay but we may drive farther south. Okay, after booking a room in Downtown Chicago for Friday and Saturday nights, we changed our minds. We decided that since we had both ... read more

Once again, we were blessed with great weather today. We reached our goal of seeing three of the Great Lakes on this road trip. Today, was Lake Superior. Yesterday, at Mackinac Island, was Lake Huron. And the days at Arcadia were on Lake Michigan. We checked out of the Bicycle Street Inn about 9:00am and caught the 9:30am ferry to St. Ignace. We made a route decision last night that takes us off the original track. We are no longer driving up to Sault Sainte Marie. We discovered that the cruise to visit the Pictured Rock National Lakeshore departs only once per day until June. The departure time is 2:00pm. So, we decided to give up on our plan to visit the city and the local university where my friends, Chris and Cathy Buell, attended. We ... read more

We have been blessed. More good weather. One of our key goals from the beginning was to visit this island. We had three activities considered must dos: The Grand Hotel porch, a carriage ride and a bicycle ride. We did all three today. We made an early walk to the Visitor's Bureau to pick up a tour map. Next we walked uphill along the Marquette Park to get a look over the city. We chose not to visit the Fort which was along this route. As we returned, we decided to take the carriage ride to see more of the island. It took us west along the main street and then a block off the main street with our driver pointing out many historical homes. Then we entered the area where all of the island's horses ... read more

Another long drive today. We hated to leave our friends but it was time to get started to make our target destination by 3:00pm. We got on the road about 9:00am. We had a plan to visit a number of interesting beachfront cities and towns along the way. And we did. Our first stop was the Sleeping Bear Sand dunes. The views at the top are spectacular. Only, I know that by reading. We chose to skip this dune climbing test and move on. We think that Baldy, in the Arcadia Dunes was enough of a test and we passed. These are stunning though and if you come by you should climb. Next we made it to Charlevoix, where we had lunch at the Weathervane Restaurant. Once again the weather was perfect for an outside lunch ... read more

Our road trip continues to be fun. Today was one of the best. We started our Mother's Day Sunday with a visit to Blaine Christian Church where Charlie and Sharon are members. We loved the traditional service which included communion. The pastor was excellent with a well delivered message. We felt right at home in this congregation. After church we returned home for a nice lunch and then got ourselves ready for our big challenge. Jackie and I agreed to climb the nearby "Old Baldy" in the Arcadian Dunes. To get to this enormous sand dune, you have to hike through the woods for about 1-1/2 miles. The last third of which is up some serious sand dune hills. The challenge is climbing in very loose sand. Once at the top, the real test happens. The ... read more
