10 Feb 2020 Istanbul - last day Just an easy day wandering around the city before we head off tomorrow for Çanakkle. Erol, one of the owners of our accommodation, gave me a beautiful bunch of flowers this morning. That is two gifts of flowers in 4 weeks. I AM flower worthy!!!! Knackers was super excited about the exchange rate at the Grand Bazaar this morning! We took a wander to who knows where after that. We were supposed to be heading for the Spice market. Its amazing where you end up with shortcut Shane at the helm, and often we see some really intersting things. After ending up outside Laleli mosque, a looooong way from the Spice market, we came across some ancient ruins and roman columns dating back to, well, who knows when. I ... read more

07 Feb 2020 Istanbul As often happens, our easy, unplanned days often turn in to some of the busiest. After walking through the long, winding park at the back of the Topkapi Palace, we found ourselves by the banks of the Bosphorous Strait, overlooking the Asia side of Turkey. Those of you watching the new series, Ottoman, will know exactly where that is, and what it means to Turkey. We walked over the Galata bridge, which crosses the Golden Horn. Shane has had quite alot to say about the Golden Horn over the last few days. I have been ignoring him!Finally....I found someone selling Gozleme! Apparently it is only a summer food here so my dream of consuming most of my calories eating the stuff will die here also. Shane is making up for it eating ... read more

04 Feb 20 Marrakesh -Istanbul It is with some sadness that we leave Hamid and Aissa behind in Marrakesh today and head to our next destination, Istanbul. Well, true, I might have been a little more than sad. When Knackers says to me, "You ok? You're a bit emotional", I can't even look at him and my eyes begin leaking again! This could possibly go on for a few more days! We're staying at Cube Suites in an Aparthotel for the next 7 nights. Its great to be able to get up when you want in the morning and make your own breakfast without feeling that you have to race down to the breakfast room before it closes or all the good food has all but disappeared. 05 Feb 2020 Istanbul Breakfast at a little restaurant ... read more

2nd Feb 2020 Marrakesh We've had a great morning with city guide Mustafa and visited Bahia palace, the Jewish quarter, the mosques, before meeting up with Hamid and Aissa and heading to the Musèe Berbère Jardin Majorelle, and then to the Carrefore for a bottle of wine.....well two bottles of wine and a bottle of whisky.Nice quiet dinner down the road and a bottle of wine on the rooftop terrace at the hotel is a nice way to round off the day. I daresay the other bottle will end up there tomorrow night. 3rd Feb 2020 Marrakesh A free day on our own today so we headed back to the Jewish quarter for a better look, and then we took off down another road which turned out to lead to the tanneries and as we're heading ... read more

31.01.20 Imlil-Essaouira Arrived in Essaouira mid afternoon yesterday. We were lucky enough to score an ocean view room at Riad Mimouna. The 180 degree views are spectacular from our corner room! A wander around the medina for the rest of the afternoon found us outside a barber shop and Shane has decided to have his beard clipped. When I arrived back at the barbershop, I looked in the window and Shane is still sitting there while the barber gives him a blow dry! Yes, he has a brush in one hand and the hair dryer in the other and he's happily going about his business. I am laughing out loud in the street and Shane spots me out of the corner of his eye and begins to laugh as well. Where is the camera when I ... read more

28.01.20 Ouarzazate - Toubkal, Imlil It was a big day in the car today to get to Imlil, and we arrived shortly after 6pm. Aissa is a fabulous driver and a very kind man as well. Not like these other two clowns I am travelling with.? On the way, we stopped at the Ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, dating from around the 17th century, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. It is situated along the former caravan route between Ancient Sudan and Marrakech. Most people live in more modern homes on the other side of the river now, however there are still a few families living inside the ancient village.Hamid will be impressed that I am paying attention today instead of looking out the window pretending to pay attention! Before lunch we walk ... read more

Before leaving the Dades Valley this morning we took a drive to Tissdrine, passing through the beautiful rock formations called the Monkeys Toes. We've been making a bit of fun of Knackers for the past week, but today, the tables are turned. Having told Hamid at the beginning of our trip that I didn't want to be sitting around all day eating and getting fat in Morocco, today we have parked the van at the bottom of the hill and walked to the top so that " the fat woman can get her exercise"! Shane has renamed this part of the mountain "Monkeys Arsehole" because there is a big hole in the middle of the rock. They both think this is very funny. Its like being on a school camp with 9 year old boys. "I ... read more

23.01.20 Fes-Ifran- Ziz Valley This morning we left Fes for Ziz Valley, travelling through Ifran, a town you could be forgiven for thinking you had been transported to a Swiss village full of chalets.....and that also includes snow!Yeah baby, its snowing in Africa today! The higher we climb, the thicker it gets and we have to detour as the road we need to take is closedWe made a quick stop in Midelt to see the Barbary monkeys before heading to our hotel in Ziz Valley, one of the world's largest oasis. We've scored a tower room on the roof top, probably because there are only 7 people staying, but I'll take it. The views are lovely but there isnt much to do now until tomorrow except eat.Its the usual affair with salad and olives to start ... read more

22.01.2020 FES After spending a free day exploring Chefchaouen, we moved on to Fes yesterday, and we are here for 2 nights. On the way we stopped at the ancient city of Volubilis, which covers a 42 hectare area. The then capital was founded in the 3rd century BC!!! The city was extremely well preserved until the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, when it was pretty much flattened. We stopped in Meknes for lunch. Shane has developed more than a liking for moroccon tacos. Hamid now asks every day, " Shane (pronounced Shine) my friend, what would you like for your lunch today? More tacos?" . " Sounds good", says Shine.? Then its a whirlwind tour of the city, including the granery which used to hold up to 20 years worth of grain, and the royal stables ... read more

We arrived yesterday in Chefchaouen to the rain and cold. Having dropped off our bags, we headed in to the beautiful Medina to lose ourselves and eat of course. I am still looking for the beautiful biscuits we ate in Casablanca .... all shortbread and sesame seeds but with oh so much more butter! Chefchaouen is famous for its beautiful blue-washed buildings and streets in the old town. The steep cobbled laneways are slippery to say the least, but it has dried up quickly today thank goodness. In the main square of Place Outa el Hammam is the red walled Kasbah which was a 15th century fortress and dungeon. The views from the top of the tower of the immediate town are stunning, as they are from the Spanish mosque, which is about a 15 minute ... read more
