Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Carnarvon March 17th 2013

We got into Carnarvon and immediately liked it for its ease and simplicity. When traveling, there is something to be said for compact, convenient towns. In one short drive through, you can figure out where the best place to park in the shade is, where the information center is, where the best internet is, and where there are public toilets and supermarkets. With this out of the way in a few minutes, you can then proceed to doing what you need to, and still be out of town in a few hours. In the world of traveling, as far as we are concerned, small towns are king. We stopped for lunch at the bay, and went online for a while to keep in touch with the goings on of the real world back home, and decided ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Denham March 12th 2013

As we drove towards Denham, we decided to try and stay at one of the campsites along the coast on the way up. Now, this may sound straight forward, but it was a friday. The Shire Offices we had to contact to arrange for the permit closed at 4pm, and we, though driving at a steady pace, were hours from any form of cell phone reception. Even with Telstra, the company with the best reception in regional Australia, we are still mostly in a black hole of cell phone coverage about 80% of the time. We were lucky enough to make it to Billabong Roadhouse (presumably it was established long before the surf brand) to be able to utilize their trusty landline just in time. Browsing their shop, we had to buy me a fly net ... read more

We continued north along the coast, and saw there was a place on the map where camping was permitted for free which seemed to be right on the beach. We had to check it out. 9 times out of 10 it will just be a little pocket next to the road, where everyone can see everything, which, when there is no toilet, does make for complicated situations. We drove down a dirt road and it ended, well, in a pocket next to a dumpster, where there was a caravan parked and we could see straight into the nice older couple having dinner. Embarrassed, we thought if we just drove onto a patch of sand, we could at least have our backs to them. Well, that quickly turned into us getting stuck, or “bogged”, as one says ... read more

In our hurry to get out of Perth, we packed up the car, bought enough canned food to last us over a week, filled up with what was to be the cheapest diesel for the next 4000 km, and drove to what seemed to be the closest and best option outside greater Perth. This ended up being New Norcia, which according to the Camps 6 book (the camper's bible in Australia) seemed like an oasis of services in the middle of nowhere, but really was just a patch of brown grass behind a roadhouse next to the road in what turned out to be Australia's only monastic town. We got our first night of sleep in the car (and the sturdy bed Øyvind had built), used all our gear for the first time since we just ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth » Perth City March 1st 2013

We got into Perth after traveling overnight from Cebu to Kuala Lumpur, which meant that by the time we got to our hostel, we hadn't slept for over 30 hours. We were already in shock at the fact that the bus ride from the airport had cost us 35 dollars (each!), and our arrival at our hostel did nothing to lighten the mood. Having been without internet for a few weeks, and not knowing we were arriving in the middle of Perth's high season (in late February? who knew?) we had ended up having to book a room at Aberdeen Lodge, which was the only thing available within Perth town that was under 80 dollars a night and only described by 50% of its previous users as a fleabag flophouse (the rest were so described by ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Negros Oriental » Dumaguete February 20th 2013

Our trip back into the real world from Sipalay was through Dumaguete, the road there involved 3 different busses, two of which were local, dusty and hot, but, really, nothing to complain about. Dumaguete itself was a bit more on the charming side, with a beautiful cathedral (complete with a fiesta upon our arrival) and a riverside lane with restaurants and places to hang out. We basically indulged ourselves on this last leg of our trip in the realm of cheap luxury. We took tricabs for 18 pesos (about 40 cents) for 20 minutes, we ate the most amazing pig trotters (a platter fit for a king) for about 3 dollars, and yeah, did a lot of consuming and engulfing. This was our last chance. Oddly enough, we had picked the Philippines for relaxing, but had ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Negros » Sipalay City February 17th 2013

Getting to Negros from Bantayan is for the well-travelled. People gather at the ferry station in Bantayan town (where there are, so to speak, no tourists), and depending on the day, the ferry may go to one of two ports on Negros. This means you may or may not have to take an 8-hour bus to Bacolod instead of a 4-hour one. Also everyone gets there early, adding to the excitement, even though the boat has no chance of leaving before the tide is high enough (about 2-3 hours into the wait). All of this is not as arbitrary as it sounds, but while in the planning stages it seemed apparent that getting from Bantayan all the way to Sipalay in one day was out of the question. And we were indeed glad we hadn't tried. ... read more

Asia » Philippines » Cebu » Bantayan February 9th 2013

We arrived in Bantayan after a 4-hour bus ride and an hour-long ferry, which were both extremely cheap and well-organized, and the porters were easy to dissuade and no one tried to steal our luggage from the bays under the bus (you fearmongering travel bloggers, please stop writing useless advice!). We were picked up by a driver from our resort (this sounds much fancier than it is, though it did involve a printed! A4 sheet with our names on it) and soon realised that in our haste to get a nice place to stay that was not fully booked we had forgotten to check which side of the island we were on. However, it ended up being totally worth it, even though there was no beach to speak of really, and most of the time the ... read more

Singapore had been loads of fun but as any city of its size and modernity (not that there are THAT many) it had also proven rather frenetic, and we were excited at the prospects of the next stage in our travels: two weeks in the Philippines, where we had allowed ourselves to only choose two major destinations without any flying in between, and where the only major thing on our schedule was not having anything on our schedule. These, of course, were hard rules to abide by when each island seemed, upon closer inspection, to provide its own brand of endless activities, be it snorkeling, mountain climbing, driving around, or even sorcery. But we had decided this would be our «vacation» before heading to Australia (and completely changing our way of travelling), as well as of ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Little India February 4th 2013

The last leg of our train trip was more reminiscent of travel in the rest of SouthEast Asia. The tracks were out, so we had to take a train until Kluang, then a bus to the border, then a train from Johor Bahru to Singapore. It all went seamlessly, though of course took a little longer. However, arriving to Woodlands Checkpoint was not as welcoming as we expected, adn there was no information to be had, no ATMs and no exchange. We managed to change some of our money at the mall enxtdoor, but we were lucky our hostel had sent us transfer information (we did not yet know that Singapore taxis are very affordable). A bit before midnight, we were at our hostel, the Inn Crowd. It was clean and simple and pretty much just ... read more
