Saturday, November 30th Santiago, Chile the start of our South American Cruise Before we left home, since we arrived in Santiago at 7:30 am and didn’t have to be on board the ship until 5:00 pm, we connected with two other couples taking this same Holland American cruise on the MS Zaandam from Valparaiso, Chile and booked a tour that went from the airport to the dock. We had to get there some way and this was actually cheaper than the Holland American airport to ship “transfer” cost. Our tour guide was right there when we exited the airport terminal and the other 4 people were waiting in the van. We quickly settled in the van and our guide drove toward Valparaiso which is about 90 km away. I was surprised to find the landscape to ... read more

THANKSGIVING EVE AND DAY AT SEA AND DISEMBARKATION—Wednesday-Friday, November 27-29, 2013 The first two days were days were at sea as we headed back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The first sea day, all four of us relaxed around the ship. Read, swam, worked on finishing blog narrative, went to the movies, had tea in the dining room at 3:00, attended some classes, etc. Valerie and I woke up on Thanksgiving morning with the waves really rocking and rolling the ship caused by the wind blowing at 55 mph. We both went up on the 9th deck and had breakfast and then we separated. Valerie was going to read on the 10th floor observation deck so that she could finish and return the book she was reading. I headed to our cabin as I wanted to finish ... read more

PUERTO LIMON, COSTA RICA--Tuesday, November 26, 2013 We were up by 5:00 this morning as our tour left at 6:45 and we needed to meet at 6:30 am in the lounge. We were off with a very personable and knowledgeable guide to visit the Tortuguero Canals, a part of the river system that runs many miles through the rainforest parallel to the coastline. Our guide explained that the “piles” of coral/rock that could be seen along the shore were caused by the strong 1991 earthquake that lifted up the ground leaving these mounds. There was also evidence of hotels and other buildings devastated by the ‘quake. After a bus ride along the coast north of the town, we came to a small boat dock with waiting pontoon boats. We quickly boarded the boats and took off ... read more

PANAMA CANAL AND COLON, PANAMA--Monday, November 25, 2013 Overcast and nice and cool. We were up early to watch the ship go through the first lock (Gatun) and then sail into and anchor in Gatun Lake. The four of us gathered after breakfast in the lounge until our tour was called, as we had to tender to the pier. The tender craft were lifeboats that held up to 120 or so people. We then got on our small 20 passenger bus and rode by the construction of the new canal just as it opened up and started pouring rain. We were able to see some, but the rain made it difficult to see clearly. By the time we got to the lock itself the rain had cleared and we could watch a freighter go through the ... read more

South America » Colombia » Cartagena November 24th 2013

CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA--Sunday, November 24, 2013 Our original plan for this port was for the 4 of us to get a taxi and go into town and walk around to look at the sites. The information we had said this was very doable. The walking around the old walled town was doable, but getting to that town was problematic as this was another port where the taxis were way, way away from where the ship was docked. So at the last minute, after an early breakfast, I went down onto the dock and bought tour tickets for “Scenes of Cartagena with Less Shopping” for Valerie and me as Paul and Christina had bought tickets the night before. It was extremely hot and humid at 8:30 when we got on the bus for our ... read more

AT SEA ON THE ZUIDERDAM BETWEEN CURACAO AND CARTEGNA, COLUMBIA--Saturday, November 23, 2013 Happy Birthday Alex! We spent the day at sea heading northwest toward Cartagena, Columbia. We did what we usually do when we don’t leave the ship. We read, slept, worked on the blog, and read and slept some more. And oh, we eat too much. I thought I would use this day’s space to talk about this ship, The Holland American Lines’ Zuiderdam, and to do some comparison with the Royal Caribbean’s Legend of the Seas. This was the ship we took on our last cruise from Singapore to Rome. The general ambiance of this ship is classier with a somehow more posh feel. I don’t think I can tell you what makes it that way, as both ships ... read more

WILLEMSTAD, CURACAO--Friday, November 22, 2013 We arrived in port by 7:30 and Valerie was up on the top deck to take pictures. By 8:30 the 4 of us were on the dock waiting in line to board our tour bus. We started the tour by driving through the colorfully painted old colonial residential part of Willemstad with its restored tropical adaptation of Dutch style homes. The homes were built out of blocks of coral and as the salt leaches out of the walls, it curls the paint off which makes it very hard to keep the homes looking neat. This was on the “Otrobanda” side of the Santa Anna Bay that splits the city in two and is the entrance to the harbor. We arrived shortly at the Curacao Museum housed in ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Aruba » Oranjestad November 21st 2013

Oranjestad, (Orange city from the House of Orange the ruling family in the Netherlands), Aruba We had breakfast with Paul and Christina and then watched masked boobies dive and go after the flying fish that were escaping the ship cutting through their territory. The four of us got on different buses after lunch to take two different tours. Paul and Christina to snorkel and Valerie and I to tour by “semi-submarine” the same scuttled wreck of the 440 foot freighter, the Antilla and to tour other parts of the island. The Antilla was a German merchant marine ship that the Captain sank on purpose because he didn’t want to return to Germany and get involved in World War II. HALF MOON CAY, BAHAMAS AND ONE DAY AT SEA PASSING HAITI—Tuesday and Wednesday, November 19-20, 2013 Half Moon Cay--I woke up when the ship dropped anchor this morning. This small island in the Bahamas is owned and operated by Holland America Cruise lines. Valerie’s shoulder was bothering her this morning so decided to first soak in a hot tub before disembarking the ship. Tendered to shore with Christina and Paul about 10:30 and then walked up a path to the information desk. The information we had gotten on-line said that there was a nature trail that went out to a bird sanctuary and we thought that would be a good thing to look into. The woman at the desk said that storms had decimated the bird sanctuary but that there was still a nature trail and ... read more

Clarkston, GA--Friday, November 15th. Our starting mileage is 39,893 with the temperature at a cool 46 degrees at 12:36 and drizzling. Instead of flying south, we opted to take off in Rosie II and drive to catch the cruise ship in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We started by driving I-285 south to the I-675 cut off and then hit I-75 around Stockbridge. At that intersection we found the Golden Corral for a lunch stop. As we exited the off ramp there was a small sign that caught my eye. It read, “On-line Heating and Air Conditioning” and gave a URL address to contact. Valerie and I had a lively discussion as to how you might deliver that service “on-line.” Freon top-off through the either??? New compressor delivered by aliens?? What??? At the Golden Corral we bought enough ... read more
