Friday, July 5th--Marriott Hotel and Conference Center in Chantilly, VA. The groom's parents invited all of their side of the family to brunch at Eggspectation a local restaurant. Neither Valerie nor I, were impressed with what we ordered. Since it was our first time there, we may have just not ordered well as others raved about their meal. Relaxed and visited some more until it was time to get fancied up for the 5:00 wedding to be held there at the hotel. We thought that the venue was a little unusual, but the bride had a lot of out of town guests so the hotel was a good choice from the standpoint of not having to transport guests from the airport to church and then to a reception. The hotel is apparently booked for weddings all ... read more

Home to Anderson, SC--Sunday, June 30, 2013 Heading north this morning to attend our cousin's wedding in the Washington, DC area. It is the first wedding of the next generation of cousins on our Mother’s side. There are only 4 (all boys)! Almost ready to go, as Rosie II is packed and we now just have the last minute stuff like water plants, adjust temp., etc. to do. After the wedding, we think we will head north into Quebec, Canada. Expect to be home by the 1st week in Aug. Our starting mileage is 38361 at about 11:30 am and the temperat... read more

Final thoughts on the whole two month overseas adventure: As Valerie wrote at the beginning of this blog, this trip was very atypical for us. We of course, could not take Rosie, and instead we planned to visit many countries that we have never been to before relying on others to convey us from place to place. We had never sailed on a typical cruise ship with a casino, nightly entertainment, planned activities, miniature golf course, rock climbing, etc. Plus, we had never been on a long guided bus tour as usually when going overseas, we rent a car and drive ourselves, or plan our trip using planes, trains, etc., and going where we want, when we want. So not only were the countries with their different cultures, sights, and planned experiences new, but the mode ... read more

ISTANBUL, TURKEY ON OUR OWN (PART 4, including Bosphorus Cruise and Glimpse of Black Sea)—May 17-28, 2013 We decided to book a cruise through the hotel desk on the Bosphorus that sailed as far north as the Black Sea. What sold us on this particular tour was the fact that they would pick you up and drop you off at your hotel. So, on a clear, sunny, Sunday after an early breakfast, we got ready and waited in the main hotel lobby for our ride. And waited--finally after a half hour the desk clerk called to see what was going on and found that we were not on the bus driver’s list of people to be picked up. A taxi was sent for us and away we went to meet up with the bus in route ... read more

ISTANBUL, TURKEY ON OUR OWN (PART 3, including Dolmabahce Palace)—May 17-28, 2013 We took a taxi to the DolmabahcePalace as looking at the map of Istanbul we mistakenly thought it was too many blocks for us to walk from the end of the tram line to the palace gates. We first waited in line to go through a security check and then waited in line to get separate tickets to both the main administrative building (the Selamlik) and the harem. Although the literature said you could purchase a photograph "use ticket," it didn't seem to be available and the tickets had to be paid for in cash, which we didn't expect. Thankfully, we had enough cash and were within the 3000 per day quota of visitors; unfortunately, you were not allowed to take pictures inside. For ... read more

ISTANBUL, TURKEY ON OUR OWN (PART 2, Food including Kumkapi Fish Markets and Seafood Restaurants)—May 17-28, 2013 Historia Mall One afternoon we took a taxi to the several floor Historia Mall to look around. It was a very modern mall with upscale shops. Valerie had killed her mouse and we were fairly sure she could get a new one there, which she did. We were surprised to have to walk through a security screening and place our bags/purses through an x-ray machine to enter the mall. Lots of restaurants were located on the top floor and a grocery store was on the bottom floor. We were looking to find something different to eat for lunch and thought we could find it here. Did find a place that sold large baked potatoes that could be stuffed with ... read more

ISTANBUL, TURKEY ON OUR OWN (PART 1, including Topkapi Palace)—May 17-28, 2013 Istanbul, Turkey at the ZaGreb Hotel, Friday, May 17th-Tuesday, May 28th My usual style for this blog has been to report day-by-day happenings and thoughts. In this section that covers the 10 plus days we spent in Istanbul, I am not going to do that. I am, instead, going to cover things that we did during this time plus write about observations and thoughts on Turkey and on topics that I haven't covered before in my postings. Picking up from my last blog entry, the next morning, we had breakfast with some of the tour group and said our "goodbyes." We repacked our clothes and put all the stuff we wouldn't get into, like our dressy cruise clothes, into the larger bag. We were ... read more

ISTANBUL, TURKEY—Thursday, May 16, 20103 Grand Halic Hotel, Istanbul, Turkey Our original plan was not to participate in Cosmos' optional tour of Istanbul scheduled for this morning. We planned on being in Istanbul for another 10 days and all of the tourist sites are located on public transportation, so we had expected to go on our own. What changed our minds, was the fact that tour groups do not have to stand in long, long lines to get tickets and then in another long, long line to get through the entrance plus we would have the very knowledgeable guide, Aykut Gun to tell us stuff. You still stand in line, so don't let someone tell you otherwise--they just aren’t as long. We had noticed that two cruise ships were docked in the Golden Horn and Istanbul ... read more

BURSA TO ISTANBUL, TURKEY—Wednesday, May 15, 2013 Almira Hotel, Bursa Started today on the bus at 7:30 as we are driving to Istanbul and will then tour some places this afternoon before checking into the same hotel we started this tour from. As we left the city, we could see how modern and commercialized this city had become. Its proximity to Istanbul and location on the highway between Ankara and Istanbul has helped the city become ideal for new developments. Between these two towns, there is hilly forested land with lots of plant nurseries along the way. Would have liked to stop and browse through one to see if they have any interesting plants. So far, other than some different native blooming trees, the plants planted around for landscaping seem to be the same ones we ... read more
