UTAH’S CANYONLANDS--- CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK Monday, May 14 No name, no fee, side of the road on BLM land, camp spot. 75 degrees at 9:45, with clear blue but hazy skies toward the mountains. We drove on into the community of Torrey to look it over and to get some gas. Another pioneer Mormon community, but we did see other churches of other denominations here. After filling the tank, we drove back to the Fruita campground inside Capitol Reef National Park to get a spot to camp. After we had secured a spot, at this very nice campground , we drove back down the park entrance road to look at the various sites. Why is the area interesting? This park preserves the 100 mile buckle of the earth’s crust back over itself called ... read more

Sunday, May 13th Happy Mother’s Day! It is 57 degrees and overcast this morning at 8:30. Starting mileage was 25552 We continued driving south on US 191 to the small town of Blanding, about 20 miles away. There we turned west on highway 95 to Natural Bridges National Monument. There are three bridges in this park, Sipapu, Kachina, and Owachomo, that have been formed by running water. Each can be seen by walking a short trail to an overlook into the canyon. After seeing the bridges, we drove out of the park and turned southwest on highway 276 toward the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell. There are two roads to choose from to get over Lake Powell at this junction—one goes over a bridge and one goes by ferry. If you follow us ... read more

May 10th, Thursday (continued) The Arches National Park is a park not to be missed!! We wonder how many people drive Interstate 70 and not bother to go a little over 20 miles south to see these spectacular views. This park contains the largest concentration of natural stone arches in the world---more than 2,500. To be labeled an arch the hole must have an opening of at least three feet long in any one direction. We drove through the park and saw balanced rock and those arches that you didn’t have to hike a long ways to see. The campground here, at Arches, is situated on a ridge with an absolutely glorious view—unfortunately, it was full. After touring this park, we drove 6 miles south of Moab to Ken’s Lake, a BLM campground on a small ... read more

Wednesday, May 9th (continued) Drove back north and turned alongside of the Colorado River up the scenic highway 128. Most BLM campgrounds along the river were filled, or the spot that was open was in full sun. Extremely scenic drive with all kinds of rock formations. At mile 29, we found no one camping in the Dewey Bridge Campground. There were 4 workmen building a sun shelter for the river rafters to sit under while they wait for their rubber raft or their bus ride back to town. Paid our $6. and settled in under a big shade tree. May 10th, Thursday Blue skies and 59 degrees this morning. Starting mileage is 25397. In the Dewey Bridge BML camground. First thing we did this morning is to drive a block or so to see the bridge ... read more

Tuesday, May 8th It is 66 degrees this morning at 10:30 with mostly blue skies. Starting mileage is 25205 from Wind Whistle BLM campground. I am going to cover this huge area briefly as my verbal descriptions of these lands, created by upheavals of multiple layers of sandstone, once a gigantic seabed, and then carved and shaped by wind, water, and gravity, cannot do them justice. These flat of layers of sedimentary rock have been cut into hundreds and hundreds of canyons, mesas, buttes, fins, arches, and spires. Five National Parks can be found in Southern Utah, an additional 6 parks are National Monuments, 9 million acres are National Forests, and lastly, 23 million acres are managed by the Bureau of Land Management . Obviously we had a lot to see and do in this region ... read more

If you are at all interested in American Indian cultures and/or archeology, you must put this National Park on your “bucket list”. There are over 4,500 archeological sites within the park with 600 of them being cliff dwellings. Sunday, May 6th 62 degrees at 10:00 with blue skies. 25054 is our starting mileage. As we left our camp site, we saw about 7 does in the underbrush/trees in back of the bathrooms. Up, up, up we climbed to the top of the next mesa at about 8,000 feet. Our first overlook was a view of the valley below and a glimpse of the old roadbed along knife edge. The park was a popular place in the early 1900’s for drivers of the new automobiles who wanted to challenge the steep grades of this park. Only the ... read more

Valerie and I have tried to figure out why our parents never traveled up this way to see these parks. They traveled for a year all over the USA in Rosie I, but seemly missed this area of the country. It is really sad as Dad, with his interest in archeology, would have thoroughly enjoyed them. The only thing we can come up with is that it isn’t on the west-east route to El Paso, Salt Lake, or Flagstaff, which were the routes we usually traveled as kids to see family, and I believe they traveled after we were raised. Friday, May 4th Canyon de Chelly campground. Starting mileage was 24830 with blue sky and 77 degrees at 1:30 when we began our exploration of the South rim of the park. The park consists of several ... read more

Wednesday, May 2nd --USA RV Park on old Highway 66. Decided to spend another day. We have absolutely no idea what time it is. The cell phone gives us one time, the GPS system another, the computer another, and none of the clocks agree. We crossed into Mountain Time outside of El Paso, TX when we entered New Mexico and everything was fine, everything agreed. Then we hit Arizona where they do not observe daylight savings time, except on the Navajo Reservation, which we went in and out of. To be more confusing, the Hopi Reservation, which is completely surrounded by the Navajo Reservation, follows Arizona time. Then yesterday, we left Arizona and bopped back into New Mexico again. We finally decided it really didn’t matter since we had no appointments, but it was a bit ... read more

Tuesday, May 1st Happy May Day, Y’all! Blue, clear skies and 64 degrees. Fool Hollow State Park near Show Low, Arizona. Started off the morning by cleaning up Rosie inside and out as each camp spot here had a concrete pad to park on instead of the usual gravel or dirt. There were lots of ground squirrels and chipmunks out running around. Valerie was taking some pictures of the camp spot/lake and swimming along came 3 pairs of Canada Geese. Each pair had one goose in the lead, a row of 6-8 goslings, and then the mate bringing up the rear. All three pairs had this straight row, one behind the other. I hadn’t realized how protective Canada Geese were of their young, until this trip. This is a really nice State Park with wide spaces, ... read more

Saturday, April 28th We left Big Horn Campground in the Gila National Forest at about 9:30. 57 degrees, blue, blue skies, mileage starting at 24372. The night was so clear last night that the stars were the brightest I have seen in a long, long time. They came all the way down to the horizon. We started out in the morning and drove through ranchland, forests, and interesting geological formations heading north along highway 180 crossing into Arizona. Saw a wolf just standing by himself in the forest. Evidence of a HUGE forest fire in this area. Found the Luna Lake Recreation area, now in the White Mountains of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, just south of the town of Alpine at 8023 feet in elevation. Lots of ducks, coots, and at least 3 great blue herons ... read more
