Wednesday 18th-21st Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Instead of doing an itemized daily itinerary on our stay in Rio, I am going to just write about some of the highlights of what we did, while we were there for the 4 days. I have gone over the process of disembarking from cruise ships on several blog entries. Basically, it is the same for all cruise lines as they systematically must get all passengers and their luggage off the ship in one morning so that the rooms can be cleaned for the next group of passengers coming aboard that afternoon. Times for each group (early to catch flights, later for people on excursions, very late for people like us, with no time specific activity scheduled) is given to us the night before, but so far the time has ... read more

Sunday, December 15th--Buenos Aires, Argentina on the River Plata Clear blue skies. Buenos Aires and Montevideo are both located on the River Plata which is 180 miles long and goes from over a mile wide at its confluence of two rivers to a 140 miles wide at its mouth. It is the widest river in the world (if you consider it a river and not a bay off the Atlantic Ocean as some do). It is fairly shallow so the ships must sail in a narrow channel marked by buoys. When we left this port we were pushed out by tugs for quite some time. For both Valerie and I, the country of Argentina is equated with the culture of the Gauchos on the vast Pampas. We think we must have used the same elementary textbook ... read more

Thursday, December 12th--At sea, sailing toward Montevideo, Uruguay Got up late and did the usual activities for us on a “down” at-sea day. We are constantly surprised (not sure why??) at the many ways that the cruise ships make extra money besides the previously discussed assessed gratuity of $25 per stateroom, per day, to offset their employee wages. As soon as there is a day at sea, the tables come out around the pool for the sale of T-shirts at 2 for $20, and handbags, scarves and watches for $10. As you know, there are art auctions, it seems almost daily. Who goes on a cruise to buy art?? How do you get the fine art pictures home?? Then there is the jewelry. Same thing as far as we are concerned; however, they must sell enough ... read more

Monday, December 9th --Tierra del Fuego, Cape of Good Horn 46 degrees out and fairly clear. Valerie and I were up by 6ish to see us sail completely around the “Cabo de Hornos,” which if you look at a map, is the last little island in the Chilean Archipelago—yes, we were back in Chilean waters. The weather started out looking rainy but cleared up quite nicely and the water was very smooth with no wind. The crew was amazed at the good weather, since this is usually one of the most hazardous sailing areas in the world as the strong currents from the Atlantic and the Pacific meet and clash causing large waves. Strong winds usually prevail as there is no land to stop them plus there is a draft off the Andes Mountains. To add ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia December 8th 2013

December 8th, Sunday Glacier Alley and Ushuaia, Argentinaon the island of Terra del Fuego. Surprisingly clear blue skies and the water so calm it looks like glass. From Puerto Arenas the ship sailed via the Strait of Magellan around and to the huge island of Tierra del Fuego—part belonging to Chile and the other half to Argentina. Along the way, we passed what has been named Glacier Alley--this area is covered by ice sheets and glaciers. We spent the morning sitting in the Crow’s Nest watching one glacier after another pass by the window. The treeless, snow-covered mountain chains, one peak after another, have a glacier sitting in each valley between the mountain ridges. About 11:30 we docked at the city of Ushuaia, Argentina. This is the largest community close to Antarctica and is ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes » Punta Arenas December 7th 2013

December 7th, Saturday Punta Arenas. Rain and more rain. What is it about some animals that make them cuter than others??? Baby anything are cute. Well, except snakes and alligators--actually most reptiles come to really think on it. We think penguins fall into the cute category. Is it because they stand upright? Waddle funny? Look at you like they are really seeing you? Look like they are wearing miniature tuxes? Is it their little flipper arms or how they walk single file one following the other? All the above? Or is it just good press with movies like “March of the Penguins” or “Happy Feet.” Whatever it is about them, before we left home, we wanted to make sure we went to see one of the Magellen penguin colonies out of Punta Arenas. To be really ... read more

SAILING ALONG THE CHILEAN FJORDS THROUGH CANAL SARMIENTO AND THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN. Thursday and Friday December 5 and 6, 2013 Very overcast, rainy and foggy, both days. We got up late this morning since we rocked all night and we were tired from the motion of the ship plus an outside door kept banging again with every sway. If you look at a map of the country of Chile, from roughly the 40th parallel south, or down ½ of the country, you will notice that there are hundreds of islands large and small that make up the coastline. Between these islands and the very narrow mainland are a series of channels and straits that allow marine travel protected from the rough Pacific Ocean currents and winds. These islands were formed from the clashing of tectonic ... read more

South America » Chile » Aisén » Puerto Chacabuco December 4th 2013

PUERTO CHACABUCO, CHILE--Wednesday, December 4, 2013 45 degrees with scattered showers. Puerto Chacabuco is located at the head of the Aisén (sometimes Aysen) Fjord and is the main port of the region. The Aisén Fjord, formed by a glacier, is about 70 km (42 miles) long and provided access to the port. Until 1991, the main port was Puerto Aisén, four miles upstream on the Aisén River, which silted up with the eruption of the Mount Hudson volcano and erosion from heavy logging in the mountains. Before we left home, I had contacted a guide through an organization called “Tours by Locals” and Valerie had contacted 2 couples from the “Cruise Critic” website to make the van load complete and the fee divide among 6. To prevent anyone being left behind, we all agreed ... read more

Castro and the churches on the island of Chiloe--Tuesday, December 3, 2013 We got up early this morning, since we needed to meet for the tour at 7:45. We had booked a ship excursion since we couldn’t find a private tour that was as comprehensive. As we crossed the Lido pool area on our way to breakfast, we realized that elves had visited the ship while we slept and decorated for Christmas with a tree, Santas, swags, and wreaths. Our ship was anchored way out in the bay and it was obviously we would need to tender into the dock to catch the bus. As we came into the dock, we could see Black-headed Swans swimming in the bay and we were told that the seagulls flying overhead were Brown-hooded Gulls. It was quite obvious that ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt December 2nd 2013

Puerto Montt, Chile--Monday, December, 2013 Scattered showers with temps at about 50 degrees. Valerie and I met in the lounge at 8:15, as the cruise director announced, to get our tender tickets. The winds came up, and for safety, they started having only one tender go at a time, so we didn’t get on the dock until 9:15. There, after looking around and talking to a representative of the guide, we discovered that our tour had taken off without us. Another couple was in the same boat with us and so the 4 of us quickly got on another tour that was forming in a van right then and there. It seemed to be going to the same places, so off we went. Puerto Montt seemed to be a fairly good sized town with the Calbuco ... read more
