We went to Puerto Iguazu with the aim of seeing the Iguazu Falls. Two days later we have seen the falls from almost every conceivable angle......from above by helicopter, from below in a jet boat, from Brazil, and from Argentina. The weirdest thing about it is that every single time you see them you are still taken aback at just how awe inspiring they are and how amazing it is. So in the last two days I have taken about a zillion photos and next time you come for dinner you too can experience the majesty and beauty of the Falls as I show you the pictures. No don't worry, I'll only do that to people who are overstaying their welcome. And the really good news is that I didn't buy the DVD of the helicopter ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 3rd 2010

Our first day in Argentina has gotten off to a cracking start....after I finally got out of bed just before 11. But after the long sleepless flight from NZ a well deserved sleep I reckon! In the Lan Chile magazine I had read about a number of nice little coffee shops in BA, one of which didn't seem too far from our hotel, so Lucy and I headed off in what we thought was the general direction. We soon found ourselves in a grand impressive square (Plaza Congreso), but in the opposite direction of the cafe. We think that this is where the Government seated, which is what the name suggests. Very impressive anyway. We wandered down the road in the other direction enjoying the sights until we made it to the cafe, where to our ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 2nd 2010

It's just one day but thanks to the date line I managed to finish up my packing, figure out my storage, have a leisurely lunch with my parents in Auckland before flying to Santiago then on to Buenos Aires all well before the cocktail hour. That's the Argentinian cocktail hour anyway. About half an hour out of Santiago the skies were a stunning blue and you could see the mountain ranges all around - you couldn't see where a city might fit! I had several hours in Santiago airport and now know every inch of it. It is surprisingly scuzzy. It looks like a team of home handymen had been in and then given up for happy hour with half finished areas dotted all about and tools lying about. The rest of it wasn't much better! ... read more

Oceania » Cook Islands » Rarotonga January 4th 2010

The first thing that hits you when you get off the plane and walk into the steamy entrance hall in Rarotonga is the rich heady fragrance of frangipani and tiare flowers. After you have made your way through immigration and customs, where there is a local singer with his ukelele to welcome every flight, you are presented with floral leis. The heat, the fragrance and the friendliness set the scene for the rest of our stay in the friendly Cooks. I was very lucky to be in Rarotonga - my friend Lucy won a trip and invited me along too. The only thing was that I had to do all the organising....easy! It was a fantastic trip, worth $5,000, with the only condition that we travel to the Cook Islands. This meant that we could travel ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Great Ocean Road April 10th 2009

The Easter Holiday road trip along the Great Ocean Road began with us starting to drive in the opposite direction. It was, I hasten to add, all part of the plan. We drove down the Mornington Peninsula, popping and out of the little seaside towns until we got to Sorrento. We stopped for lunch, and I bought a slice of the "famous vanilla slice" which was kind of like a giant custard slice. Large enough to feed Cam, me and a fair size helping left over for Ralph. From Sorrento we took the ferry to Queenscliff - and then we began the Great Ocean Road proper. First stop was Bells Beach, where the Easter Rip Curl Surfing competition was in full swing. The place was packed. We then meandered through many gorgeous little towns, stopping where ... read more

Well this is a bit of a cheat because sad to say but we've already left and this comes from the Holiday Inn in LA.......I reluctantly made it to the plane. So here's how it all ended up in Belize. The last couple of days were our best yet, and that's saying something. After another fun night out, again at the Barefoot Bar, followed by pool at the Tipsy Tuna, on our final day Lucy and I were really keen to go snorkelling again, so off we went to see our friend Diana at Nite Wind. This time it was just the two of us on the day trip, and Gerald the fish man had gone awol, so we had the lovely Kenroy for the day. Kenroy is a cousin (everyone is related to everyone here) ... read more

As always, we've had a great day. This will be a short entry, given I've given you a fuller update this morning. The day was action packed! Breakfast for a couple of hours in the Secret Garden, followed by a facial. Wonderful! I couldn't get a massage as I have gotten a bit sunburnt. But even this has its uses - we went snorkelling the other day with a couple from the States, at Laughing Bird Caye. I was wearing a yellow bikini, and was keeping close to our guide Gerald (part man part fish as you may recall). They thought it was very helpful that my yellow and red striped bum made such a great beacon!! Anyhow, later this afternoon Lucy and I biked to the nearby village of Seine Bight, only about 3 miles ... read more

Well we are still in Placencia paradise and still loving it. I'm not sure how Lucy is going to drag me onto the plane in a couple of days' time. She'll just have to wave a credit card bill in front of me I suppose, because if I didn't have to, I wouldn't be leaving here! We've had an idyllic couple of days since I last updated you. Two days ago we booked another snorkelling trip, this time to Laughing Bird Caye, which is set in a Marine Reserve about 12 miles from Paradise (as I've renamed Placencia). We went with an American couple and our guide, Gerald, part man, part fish. Like everyone we've met, he is very laid back and really friendly. We had a fantastic day, boating out to the little island, which ... read more

I thought it was hell that was supposed to be hot, but I'm truly in heaven and it's damn hot. I'm not complaining, don't get me wrong, but it's very hot indeed. I spent most of the morning in the water, and anyone who knows me will tell you how unusual that is. Hot and gorgeous here - here being Placencia, in the south of Belize. Yesterday morning Lucy and I flew from Caye Caulker to Belize. For people who are interested in such things, we flew in a 208B Grand Caravan, which seats 12 passengers. Lucy and I shamelessly threw ourselves to the front of the queue in order to ensure a good seat for the views, but this unladylike behaviour was definitely worth it. It was a beautiful day, and we got excellent views ... read more

While terribly sad to leave Guatemala, being bathed in sunshine on a gorgeous Caribbean island has helped to ease the pain somewhat. Yesterday was a busy day, starting with probably the best massage I've ever had from Eva, at "Healing Hands". Lucy and I booked flights to Placencia, then we went snorkelling for the afternoon. The snorkelling was stunning. It was only about 5/10 minutes in a small boat out to the reef with Mario as our guide. He was quite a character - a little man about my height, but about three times my girth. No need for a flotation device for him, he joked. In the boat we had a gorgeous view looking back to Caye Caulker. Sadly you'll have to just imagine it, as I was a bit worried about the camera getting ... read more
