Just as I was adjusting to the delicious sultry heat of Cartagena, I had to leave. As gorgeous as it was, unfortunately I couldn't stay there forever. Leaving Cartagena was hilarious. My taxi driver to the airport, Manuel, spent more time looking at me (in the back seat) than he did at the road with rapid fire questioning: do you have a boyfriend? are you married? do you have children? how come you don't have a boyfriend? why are you single? how old are you? (at which point he made me remove my sunglasses, then followed up with "very beautiful eyes"), when are you coming back to Cartagena? can I have a photo? why don't you have a photo of yourself? will you call me? Finally at the airport, "when you get back here, don't forget ... read more

Cartagena is a fantastic city to people watch in. And my second favourite activity is simply meandering up and down the old streets and soaking up the atmosphere of daily life against the backdrop of the beautiful city. I can see the fruit sellers, the juice makers, the different salespeople walking up the street with their wares, and the people selling minutes on their phones. You can also admire the local Colombian streetwear, which can be summed up with one word - tight. It's wonderful to soak it all in. Despite having spent two weeks here, I am still finding new adventures to do and things to see. Although the most famous and perhaps with the best Gold Museum in Colombia is reputed to be in Bogota, I made a brief visit to the museum here ... read more

I was going to start this blog by saying nothing much has happened over the last couple of days, but then I remembered that I've discovered a lot more about the City's history, learnt how to dance, and have become a local TV star. Well perhaps I am overstating some of those things just a little... Now that I've been here for over a week, and I've got a week still to go, my days are nicely established into a routine. Mornings I am at school. This week there was only one new student, and several students have now left. So that means it's only me in my class. This is good and bad. Good because I'm getting a private lesson and my Spanish is making a bit of headway. Bad though because at the end ... read more

There is the weirdest tourist attraction I've ever heard of or been to, about an hour out of Cartagena. It's a volcano where you pay good money to slosh about in your swimsuit in a mud bath, while being massaged by Colombian men (who frankly, have a dream job; they should have been paying me), then when you're covered in mud you traipse down to the lagoon where the local women strip you down, and I mean strip you right down, and clean your every nook and cranny as well as your bathing suit. But what's weirdest is that it's the best fun I've had in ages. It's a really bizarre experience. I had arranged it through the school, with Mary Anne, one of the other students. As it turned out there were two other girls ... read more

Good thing that I like heat, humidity, sun and beaches, because I am going to be in Cartagena for a while as I wait for my new credit cards to arrive. Paying cash is a whole new experience! Luckily I got paid and found the one bank that accepts my debit card. But I am not complaining as I have settled into a groove and am enjoying my new life a lot. I have now been going to school for one week at Nueva Lengua , and I'm sorry to say that my Spanish skills are not making any progress from what I can tell. If I can just ask the locals to speak more slowly and then repeat everything twice I might be in with a chance. One of the great things about the school ... read more

Hola from the Caribbean. Where it is HOT HOT HOT! The air conditioning in my class room is usually set to about 24 and it feels cool and refreshing. But to return briefly to Buenos Aires....thanks to everyone for the messages, yes I am fine now but it was a pretty scary experience and not one I am looking to repeat ever. On my last day in the city I went to Alto Palermo, a large shopping mall to see if I could buy a new camera, which I did successfully. This was the only thing I replaced, as I don't have my iPod music so no point buying another, and Telecom can't connect my phone without me being in NZ, so no point in buying that either. However I am very happy about having a ... read more

Well, what a lot has happened, most of it good, but also some bad, so this is going to be a looong post. Settle in and have a cup of tea. The potted version is: fine food, delicious wine and cocktails, wonderful birthday celebrations with lovely friends and lots of laughs, lots of fabulous shopping, and enjoying exploring the beautiful city of Buenos Aires. Then being robbed at gunpoint, but meeting some very kind people along the way. But all's well that ends well and for the most part we've had a fantastic time. Lucy and I arrived in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, my birthday. Thank you to everyone for your messages and kind wishes, it was lovely to hear from you all! It got off to a slightly rocky start when the immigration official at ... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento April 12th 2010

From the crisp cool days of Bariloche to the balmy sunshine days of....Uruguay. We travelled to Colona del Sacramento from Buenos Aires by fast ferry over the Rio de la Plata, which according to some is the widest river in the world although isn't considered a river at all by others. And I thought Spanish was confusing. We are staying at another gorgeous little hotel called Hotel la Mision right on the main Plaza of the old town, or Barrio Historico. That makes it sound much grander than it actually is, because the whole town is about the size of a handkerchief, however an extremely quaint and very cute little handkerchief! On our first night Lucy and I went to a gorgeous little restaurant / bar called El Drugstore and I ate the freshest fish ever ... read more

Day two in Bariloche was just Lucy and I again, as Stella had headed off to Ushuaia, the ends of the earth! We'll meet up with her again on Tuesday in Buenos Aires. The day started off with a heavy mist over the lake and the town in the morning, so we decided to devote ourselves to chocolate tasting research in town, before heading off to Cerro Campanario. We got slightly distracted on our chocolate tasting mission by a gorgeous handbag shop called Prune , and each ended up with two new Argentinian handbags. Nice work! We then made our way to the famous Mamuschka for morning tea, chocolate purchasing and some tasting. By the time we finished the mist was clearing, so plenty of time to explore the town in the sunshine. It made for ... read more

When I was doing my trip planning it's fair to say that I was a little bit random. I decided to head to Bariloche after talking to a guy for all of five minutes who said the scenery was spectacular and not to be missed. So I booked the flight and that was about it. Much later I decided to do some research....so I was delighted to discover that Stella's travel agent believed that men from Bariloche were the hottest in all of Argentina and that it is the chocolate capital of Argentina. I assure you that it is entirely coincidental that my 2 night trip was extended to 4 nights. After a quick tour of the town courtesy of our taxi driver we went back in for dinner on our first evening and spent a ... read more
