Buenos Aires
Plaza de Congreso It's just one day but thanks to the date line I managed to finish up my packing, figure out my storage, have a leisurely lunch with my parents in Auckland before flying to Santiago then on to Buenos Aires all well before the cocktail hour. That's the Argentinian cocktail hour anyway.
About half an hour out of Santiago the skies were a stunning blue and you could see the mountain ranges all around - you couldn't see where a city might fit! I had several hours in Santiago airport and now know every inch of it. It is surprisingly scuzzy. It looks like a team of home handymen had been in and then given up for happy hour with half finished areas dotted all about and tools lying about. The rest of it wasn't much better! But the people were very nice as I stumbled through my brief purchases in Spanish. I think if you can give the language a go they are more than happy to help. Some nice people in a cafe filled up my water bottle, while in the background was Crowded House singing "Take the weather with you". Weird! I eventually found our gate and a
Auckland
Early morning in Auckland row of empty chairs and lay down to try to get a bit of a kip. I must have dozed off as I was woken by a very nice Australian woman who asked me if I was flying to Buenos Aires, as the gate had changed. I woke with a start and looked about me and it was completely empty - thank goodness she woke me as I might still be stuck in the scuzzy Santiago airport. The woman and her husband are on their way to meet their daughter who has been travelling since November.
Flying out of Santiago was pretty amazing as it is surrounded by mountains, and looking over the Andes was gorgeous. I was pretty happy however when finally we reached Buenos Aires.
Lucy and I had arranged to meet at the airport, which we eventually did after several false starts. Thank heavens we both had mobile phones I say! Turns out Lucy was at a different terminal, but with all the same chains, so our text messages went something like this - "outside by the taxis"; "me too, where you"; "by the cafe"; "la madeleine? me too". But after a very long time
Lunch in Auckland
With Mum and Dad in Auckland at Prego we finally met up and got the shuttle bus into town - cheap and easy. From what we've seen so far it's a gorgeous city, very European with lots of big wide avenues and then cute little suburban area. Quite Parisian!
Our little apartment,
Loft y Arte is great - not at all like the pictures I might add, but fine all the same. We met up with Stella who is staying nearby and went out to a gorgeous little restaurant in San Telmo, called
Territorio . Definitely recommended - atmospheric with nice food and wine.
We were all tired after our days travelling, so it was relatively early for the locals. As we tottered off to our hotels at 11.30 the rest of the city was just starting to get going.
