Hi, I am Bambi Edwards. Lori Blaney and I are delegate leaders for People to People for 2010. Together we are going with a delegation of 17 students to Japan this summer. We will be merged with a delegation out of Rocky Mount. We are currently getting ready for our travels by studying the history, geography, food, art, and customs of Japan. We are also reflecting on what it means to be an American and an ambassador.

Who is People to People?

People to People was founded on the believe that ordinary citizens of different nations, if able to communicate directly, would solve their differences and find a way to live in peace. This simple thought - that people can make a difference where government cannot - is People to People’s foundation. Since 1963, People to People Student Ambassador Programs has taken thousands of students across international borders to connect with people all over the world.

Hi All, Wow, have we had a day! Welcome to Tokyo airport. Here we met our delegate manager, Hiromi, or Hero for short. Today we explored the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Offices, including the observation deck on the 45th floor. From here we could see the city below, and the mountains. On clear day supposedly Mt. Fuji in the distance. We really couldn't see that to well today. Two of our delegates were selected by a random draw to participate in a ceremony. Parker Lee recieved the welcome from the govenment representative and Victoria Dixon presented a card that all the students had signed as a gesture of appreciation. The ambassadors experienced Anime activity. Anime is one of the largest industries in Japan. Sorry this is short but more to come. ... read more

Yesterday we visited with some aboriginies. There we did a short walk about and were shown how they lived off the land. We were also shown how to paint using paint made from rock, start a fire, play a didgeridoo, and make baskets. We had kangaroo tail for lunch. The highlight though was playing with the children. ... read more

The students have to keep journal describing their experience. I thought you might want to read what one student wrote of her expereince after visiting the War Memorial in Canberra. "Splashes of color lined the names of those who gave their lives, red poppies stained by the blood they freely gave. As I stook there in the silence, soaking it all in, I was amazed. The eternal flame burned brightly in its resting place, keeping the memory alive. The brilliant colors of stained glass illuminated to show the faces of the brave men and women who served their country. The Austrailian War Memorial was beautiful with memories shining down the halls. I loved every minute of it. The peaceful silence of it left you able to think about what happened and to experience it all." --Kenna ... read more

Finally....plenty of Internet access. Yeah! Here are some photos from the repelling. Notice the ropes attached to the mountain. Those same ropes were attached to us as we repelled. Four people repelled at a time. There were people waiting at the bottom for each of us. ... read more

Hi Everyone, Glad you liked the pictures. I will post more soon. I had planned to post yesterday but the hotel Internet was down. We are in Canberra now, but will be flying out this afternoon late to Darwin. We have toured the Sydney Opera House. It is an amazing structure. We took a harbor tour and the next day a bus to the Blue Mountains to repel. We stopped on the way to see the "Three Sisters". Ask your student about the legend that goes with the formation. The highlight so far to the trip though has by far have to be the repelling down a 200 ft cliff. There was much confidence building exercises before we started. It was really a good program about ability and success. The students were so proud of themselves. ... read more
