South America » Peru » Lima » Lima » Miraflores December 15th 2015

Well we finally made it to Lima Peru. After a one day layover we had an LA where we were able to spend some quality time with our friend Celina. And her beautiful son Noah. We arrived in Lima in the middle of the night and with my rusty Spanish as quickly as for the are taxi driver to drop it off at the grocery for a little bit of water and guess what I got all the water I can handle. He drove us near the Pacific Ocean and said hey, there's your water! So I was thoroughly chastened and ready to get better at my Spanish speaking skills. This morning we started out strong after a fitful night of rest not much sleep going into the day but we had a fantastic day. After ... read more

Tomorrow I head out on another adventure - straight to that beautiful jewel of a treasure - Peru. Peru holds Lake Titicaca, Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines and so much more. And bonus - my friend Barb is going with me! Yes people, the dynamic duo is heading out to see what South America has to offer. As always, I am sharing a picture of what my luggage looks like. We are going during the rainy season so rain gear takes up a bit more space than I'd like. However, with this being the low tourist season and temps in the low 70s, I know we are going to have a great time. First we'll have a layover in LA, then fly to Lima for a day and then over to La Paz, Bolivia. After looking ... read more

Last week I was able to spend several days with other students in the Eastern Sierras learning about the local ecology, going on a few hikes and adventures and working on sage grouse related habitat projects. What a beautiful place to be! We camped just outside of Bridgeport, CA which is close to Yosemite, Mammoth Lake, June Lake, Mono Lake, Twin Lakes and so much beauty my brain is filled nearly to capacity with sights of lush green meadows (Tuoloumne), beautiful wooded areas (everywhere) and a green sagebrush steppe as this is on the Western side of the Great Basin (and also thanks to the recent rains). The program was put on by the Bodie Hills Conservation Partnership and I feel lucky to have been able to join them. We pulled invasive weeds, learned about stream ... read more

North America » United States » Utah » Moab August 5th 2014

I chose Moab as a base of adventure while on my little mini-vacation this summer. I camped out in a walk-in campground right off the main road. Camping was a cinch, though the weirdly snobbish yuppies filling up the place were a bit, well, weird. So, consider this an open letter - just smile at someone if you see they are camping alone. It doesn't cost you anything and trust me, I'm not going to ask for help if you accidentally make eye contact, so you are in no way responsible for me. You just might make me (or someone else) smile, and relieve the loneliness of a long day on the road. The second night at the camp site a wicked thunder and lightening storm lit of the night sky for hours. I've never seen ... read more

I've been dreaming of Mesa Verde for the last six months or so, dreaming of taking part in one of the tours that leads tourists throughout the cliff dwellings of the Ancestral Pueblo people. I was fortunate enough to have the time to participate in two tours; Balcony House and Cliff Palace and was so happy I did. I have had a bit of a different summer than I had planned, so it was good to get out on a little adventure before I get back into the habit of school. After visiting the cliff dwellings and viewing the mesa loop (most of locals were farmers, and the mesa was conducive to farming). If you are anywhere, not in the neighborhood, stop in and take a tour, its worth it.... read more

North America » Mexico » Distrito Federal » Mexico City March 2nd 2014

Another beautiful day in Mexico City. I've made it back to my room just in time to best a wicked-lovely rain storm and to settle in before I catch my plane tomorrow. Today I started off into Casa Azule, Frida Kahlo's house where she lived with Diego, hosted Trotsky and painted much of her work. You know by now that I tend to get a bit weepy when I find myself in a place I've dreamed of visiting. My eyes welled up with tears the whole visit. She was so much more prolific than I had fully realized and the Mexican people are rightly proud of her. I love folk art, I like the soft edges, imperfection and rawness you find within. After the museum I went to the San Jacinto Bazaar where I was able ... read more

Teotihuacan is billed as one of the oldest and most majestic pre-Hispanic cities and is only about an hour away from the city via chartered bus. Translated as "place where gods are born", this Aztec series of pyramids, ceremonial centers and stonework is an interesting place to visit. The stairs are steep, so steep that you have to be right at the ledge, looking over, to even see them. I spent a few hours there, poking around a bit, bumbling like I always do. they have out a lot of restorative work into the pyramids, most visible is the cement work holding the pieces together so we can scramble around on them. They've done a really good job though and they have left some pieces unrestored, which I think is important so you can see what ... read more

North America » Mexico » Distrito Federal » Mexico City February 28th 2014

I'm sitting on the roof of my hostal in the Zona Rosa of Mexico City. Huge skyscrapers and various shaped buildings block my view of this noisy city, and block that noise as well. I have had an amazing reception in the city so far. Hell, even on the airplane my little abuela sat next to me, sharing her cookies, while we all congratulate a successful engagement proposal that just happened a couple seats ahead of us. Flying in you can really see the swampy past that Mexico City has risen above to become the center of activity on the country. As soon as I landed and wandered around a bit trying to find the Metro a wonderful lady took me to the Metro station and then, not only did she show me how to handle ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi May 30th 2013

I will most likely remember these banana pancakes, prepared like a thick, folded crepe with bananas and heaven tucked inside, as being the best food in India. I've had them twice now since I've been here and am currently waiting for a third try. Today is our last day in Varanasi, our last day together before elisa heads home and I head to Delhi to wait for my own jet plane to whisk me away. Elisa was an amazing travel partner and I will be forever grateful she asked me along as a sidekick on this little trip.No Nepal for me, so my trip will be a little shorter as I'm not up for the challenge at this point. Instead I will head home to work further on my studies and on myself as a person. ... read more

Seriously, every bus ride I've taken in a developing country is like this: http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wuypE6ISPag I'm typically flopping around, while simultaneously folding myself up origami style, while the local next to me is serene and still. We woke up early to catch a local bus from Allahabad to Varanasi. With no a/c and apparently no shocks, it actually wasn't a bad trip. The country side is really a sight to see, with most of those in rural India living in extreme poverty. It is really hard to wrap your mind around; the brick kiln towers, agricultural land, dirt floor houses with satellite dishes, just so much. While travelling you tend to waver between complete culture shock and acceptance, often within the same day, the same hour. India seeps into your bones and just when you think you've ... read more
