Had my first vodka shot today (ever) and damn that was good - but wooo did I feel that one little shot after a few minutes! We woke up and went over to the Church of the Savior of Spilled Blood (or something like that) anyways, beautiful church built upon the site where one of the past czars was murdered. Pics to come. Afterwords we visited a fantastic Russian cafe where I had some salted herring with potatoes, salad and then some borsht - a typical Russian soup of beets, with meat and sour cream. Amazing food! We have been strolling through the city and got our tickets to Helsinki. We'll be leaving via train tomorrow to see Sanna!!! Will update you tomorrow from a different country. Tons of pictures to come :)... read more

I love Russia, I love it here so much. In my life today is one of the best. Woke up early, free of jet lag and took off on our own personal walking tour of St. Petersburg. Found a lovely coffee chain and had some great Americanos. Then at 11am we joined in on a bike tour for about 3 hours. This tour took us all over the city, highlighting the major as well as not so well known spots in the area - and working our asses off as well! At the end of the day we visited the Hermitage, the biggest museum in Russia and one of the biggest in the world. Great day, am completely beat though. I feel great, I feel like I have my heart back, like I am me again. ... read more

Well it is 5am Sunday morning here and of course I am wide awake! Slept well and now I can't wait for the bike tour. There is a coffee shop right down the street and I am going to head over there soon! Little dissapointed that my phone won't connect to the wifi. The city is amazing and all of the people are so .....well Russian. It is hard to tell how much money we are spending because we keep thinking in dollars and the Ruble is about worth a nickel. We stopped at a supermarket last night and got a nibble. No sit down meals yet and I am drinking lots of water. Oh and I took the top bunk at the hostel so I plenty of fresh air to sleep in. Amber and I ... read more

Phew, have had a quick nap. That whole waking up at 4am in Nevada on a Friday and ending up in a Russian grocery store Saturday night is rough on a woman! Wow = memories of traveling in the Peace Corps have just flooded my mind since I got here. In addition to being cool points of reference, they also help me to fee like a more capable traveler; maybe I did learn something afterall. St. Petersburg is amazing so far. As expected the frenetic tempo, the chaos, is something this rule follower loves. People drive like crap, walk where they want, see you standing there waiting for you to move and don't give a #@$, and people have also been incredibly kind; pointing out our way when needed, telling us how to pay the bus ... read more

So I have followed Amber's lead and packed several times and narrowed my pack to just under 17 lbs. I didn't take a picture but trust me I will be styling while trekking. Just watch here and see. I am so wound up I don't know what to do next. Eric is the best, supportive and protective at the same time, I am going to miss him and Casey, but I will have so much to tell them when I get home. I have followed the packing list for Rick Steves backpack to the letter and can't wait to see how the new Hush Puppies work on the cobble stones of St. Petersburg!... read more

One day to go and I am bouncing off the walls! Wrapping up last minute details, fretting over my pets and work and behind it all extremely excited, scared and over caffeinated - awesome mix. So if you are like me, you are curious as to what to pack for a 16 - day adventure! I'm forcing myself to get my pack under 20lbs, or somethings got to go. I'll photo-shop in different outfits once I get home before I'll carry more than 20lbs on my back around 5 countries! I'm at about 15lbs right now, pack included, and have included the following: 4 tee-shirts, tanks 1 long sleeve shirt Swimsuit and trunks (sauna here we come!!)
