My GAP trip officially begins today with the first meeting at 6pm in the hotel. We'll do introductions and paperwork and then head out to dinner. I do have a roommate, but I have not met her yet. When I checked back into the hotel last night, they put me in a double so I wouldn't have to move today. Our tour leader's name is Trisha and I recently heard from Catherine, my China-Tibet-Nepal leader that she's not traveling in Asia for the next month so I won't see her again. I'm looking forward to meeting the group! I slept in a bit today and then headed out to see more of Bangkok. I first walked to Wat Skaret, the Golden Mount. After a long climb to the top (which isn't really very long at only ... read more

I spent a very relaxing weekend on Koh Sumai! It is stunningly beautiful there and I picked a great resort just based on its name and the fact that it was on Big Buddha Beach. The Secret Garden lives up to its name and there are only nine rooms in the entire place. I had a small bungalow and it was perfect. It was a 30 second walk to the beach and there was always shade to be found. There weren't many people around the first day and after arriving at noon, I sat on a lounge chair for four hours before I was motivated to do anything. I finally walked to see the Big Buddha (79 feet tall), about a 25 minute journey. I made a small donation and got a blessing from one of ... read more

Hello! I am just back from an excellent two day trip to the Kanchanburi area of Thailand. I had a great guide named Rachet and it was just me on the trip so I could ask all the questions I wanted. Our first stop was at the Phra Pathom Chedi, the second largest pagoda in Thailand. It is 120 feet high and currently undergoing a major restoration so it's entirely encased in scaffolding. We then went to the JEATH (Japan, England, Australia and America, Thailand, and Holland) War Museum which documents a bit about the history of the Thai-Burma Railway, better known as the Death Railway. The railway was built by Allied POWs and Asian laborers under the Japanese in 1942 and 1943. Over 12,800 Allied POWs and approximately 90,000 Asian laborers died during its construction. ... read more

I'm here! After three flights and one bus ride, I arrived at my hotel just before midnight. The travel was fine, but it was a very long day plus. My ride to the airport arrived at 4:00am (thanks Steph!) and I flew from RDU to DC at 6am. After a 4.5 hour layover, I flew 13 hours to Seoul. After a 1.5 hour layover, it was another six hours to Bangkok. I warched a total of five movies (Slumdog Millionaire, Vicky Christina Barcelona, The Changeling, The Express, and The Secret Lives of Bees) during the flights. I only slept maybe six hours total. On the DC-Seoul flight, the guy behind me used the restroom even more than I did (did he ever hear of Avodart?) and every time he got up, he yanked my chair back. ... read more

I am safe and sound in Kathmandu! We had a great (but cold) trip through Tibet to Mt. Everest Base Camp. The mountain is beautiful and we had perfectly clear weather the entire time! I have some great photos that are on a CD locked inside a camera shop at the moment. I was supposed to pick up the disk ay 7pm, but there was a power cut around 6:15pm and it looks like the shop closed up for the night with my disk inside. I'm trying not to panic... I'll get it in the morning so you'll have to wait for the photos. After Mt. Everest, we drove to the Tibet-Nepal border and spent the night. The next morning we walked out of China, crossed the Friendship Bridge, then walked into Nepal where were bought ... read more

We had a free day today so Mo and I slept in and had a leisurely breakfast. We went back to Bokhar Square, did some shopping and explored the area further. We walked for quite a while and finally stopped for tea and lunch. After lunch we went to the China Post bank to chnage some of our 100 yuan notes from the ATM to smaller bills. The security guard kept trying to get us to go to the actual post office and we had a hard time explaining why we were in line. He finally gave up. It was very crowded and we were in the slowest possible line. Finally, we were next when the woman behind us just pushed her way to the teller window. Mo said "excuse me - we were next", but ... read more

Today we went to visit the Potala Palace which is huge and impressive! It's not used for much anymore and you can only go in parts of it, but it is well preserved. After the Potala, we ate a quick lunch of yak noodle soup in a cave cafe and then we went to the Sera Monastery which is famous for their debating monks. Slooow internet - details and photos to follow soon... read more
