We arrived in Lhasa yesterday afternoon after an interesting trip. We got settled in our rooms and then went for dinner. On the drive from the airport into Lhasa, we stopped at an interesting spot where there is a beautiful Buddha painted on a rock wall. We also got our first glimpse of the Potala Palace which we will visit on 01 Nov 2008. Today we walked to Bokhar Square and visited the Jokhang Temple and Monastery. For dinner, we went to a Tibetan buffet and then saw a cultural dance show. Slooow internet - details and photos to follow... read more

Hi all - I am fine so no worries! I have been busy and haven't had time to blog. I do have photos to post so look for them soon. I'm in the airport in Chengdu and our flight for Lhasa leaves in an hour. We have all of our permits now which is exciting! The GAP group is together now and will be fun. Our leader is a French woman named Catherine and she's been doing tours in Asia for 10 years. Must run, but wanted to check in so you know I'm still alive and well!... read more

I've spent the last two days exploring Kunming and it has been fun. On the 28th, I went to the Yuantong Temple which is at the foot of Yauntong Hill in northern Kun ming. The temple was built more than , years ago and is the grandest and most important Buddhist temple in Yunnan province. I then went to the Flower and Bird Market which was interetsing - they had all manner of fish, reptiles, and birds for sale. I wasn't sure how many were meant to be pets and how many were for dinner! I went to the Yunnan Provincal Museum which was impressive then I then walked around The Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Square, the city center of Kuming. I picked Mo up from the airport and it was great to see her ... read more

Today I went to the Stone Forest which is 90 km away from Kunming. It's a World Heritage site consisting of stone sculptures that were formed 200 million years ago when there was a huge lake in the area. There are trails around the formations as well as in between. Many of the rocks have names, although they didn't always look like the name. I couldn't see either elephant , when it was on a platform or when it had a camel on its back. We had four hours to walk around the park so I did a walk through the Minor Stone Forest, circle of the Major Stone Forest, and then did some of the inner trails. It's a popular place and was very crowded. It was overcast with a few sprinkles, but pretty warm ... read more

I'm here! The travel gods were on my side: all of my flights were on time and I got my luggage with no problem. Thanks to Roxanne for the early AM wake up call and to Janice for the ride to the airport! My flight from RDU to DC was on time and, although I only had 45 minutes, to catch the flight to Beijing, it was no problem. The flight was scheduled to be 14.25 long, but because we had a female pilot, we were efficient and only took 12.75 hours! It was a smooth flight and I slept for maybe seven hours. I also watched two movies and read "The Good Earth" which is an excellent book. The food was pretty fgood except for the fish-flavored cup-o-noodles they gave us in the middle of ... read more

I am now in the famous Corbett National Park! This park was India’s first national park and was established in 1936. Measuring 1,318 km2, it was a hunter’s paradise during the British Raj. It is now one of India’s finest wildlife sanctuaries and was renamed after Jim Corbett in 1957, after Corbett’s death. Jim Corbett was an avid hunter in his earlier years and was famed for his skills, including the ability to track and kill man-eating leopards and tigers. He became a leading conversationalist well before it was fashionable and the park was fittingly named in his honor. It’s 200km to the park from Haridwar and we made it in four hours which is impressive! I checked into my hotel and found it to be quite nice. It’s one of the few actually inside the ... read more

Today I went to Rishikesh and Shivpuri. Rishikesh is Haridwar’s twin city and is about 20km away which is actually an hour’s drive with the road conditions and the traffic. It lies even further upstream along the Ganges and is the starting point for the holy Char Dham pilgrim route of holy sites along the Ganges. We drove through Rishikesh to the northern end of town where we parked. I wanted to walk across the Lakshman Jhula, one of two suspension bridges across the Ganges in town. It was cool and there were good view of the river from the bridge. The city sits on two sides of a gorge while the river runs through. It’s quite pretty and the water moves rapidly. It looked even cleaner here than in Haridwar which was way cleaner than ... read more

I arrived in Haridwar at 11:43pm last night after a rather bone-jarring six hour drive. My flight was late out of Varinasi as we had a political Minister on board so security was extra tight. It also took 45 minutes to get the luggage unloaded so I didn’t hit the road until 5:45pm, an hour later than I hoped. My driver was good and we made decent time. I checked into my hotel and hit the sack pretty quickly. I was still a little wound up from the road so it took me a while to fall asleep. Plus, the sheets were a little funky and had some strange spots on them, but it was too late to get them changed. I kept trying not to think about it which wasn't easy I got up this ... read more

Today I went to Sarnath which is 10 km northeast of Varanasi. Sarnath is as scared to Buddhists and Varanasi is to Hindus. In 528BC, The Buddha came to the Deer Park to preach the Dharmachakra, the Wheel of Law, his first major sermon after attaining enlightenment. Sarnath was one of India’s ancient centers of learning and many monasteries flourished here. The Dhamekh Stupa marks the spot where Buddha delivered his sermon to his five disciples. The tower is 28.5 metes in diameter and 42.6 meters high. There are eight niches around the stupa which once contained images of the Buddha. Not much of the original artwork survives on the outside of the stupa, but there are some spots that hint at the former glory. Nearby is the base of the Dharmarajika Stupa which was built ... read more

I am now in Varanasi, situated on the west bank of the Ganges and India’s holiest Hindu city. The spiritual and religious legacy goes back nearly 3,000 years. This is the city of Shiva, the foremost amongst the 12 places where the god burrowed and then burst into the sky in a fiery pillar of light. The Ganges is accessed by a series of approximately 90 ghats stretching along a 6km stretch of the river. The ghats are lined with temples and shrines and are used for daily rituals and profound rites of passage. Late yesterday afternoon, I took a bicycle rickshaw and went to the Dasashvamedha Ghat, the most centrally located ghat and the holiest spot on the river, named after the 10 simultaneous horse sacrifices performed by Brahma the Creator. Here was a ton ... read more
