Almost my last day in NZ and I am still saying "wow" . As I have said before North Island dosesn't sell itself so well - and often people don't spend long in Auckland - they just fly in and drive out... but what are they missing??? Auckland lies inthe Harauki Gulf which is part of the Pacific and there are so many beautiful island in the Gulf. Most of the time wherever you are you can see Rangitoto which is a dormant volcanic island and some of the other islands are predator free native animal sanctuaries, and on other islands people live there and even commute to the city by ferry. So today was an island day for me and Patricia kindly dropped me at the wharf and I took the trip to Waiheke Island. ... read more

Life flows in a pattern of lazy days here with Patricia and Peter...I don't seem to do much and it's perfect weather for sitting out on the deck in the sunshine ( Factor 30 is out again as well as my shorts and sun hat!!!) and reading . Now and then I feel guilty and Patricia very nicely organises me to do something ... a walk to the beach Long Bay Regional Park- - yes..then we go back to the beach later and swim...well they do and I swim about half a dozen strokes then jump about in the waves and walk on the beach. Yes then its back home and sit on the deck again - with instructions to eat at least 10 fejoa a day having been out with the bucket to harvest them..... ... read more

It’s quite a while since I had regular internet communications so haven’t been able to do the blog…but now I am up and running again. So here we go…. I was on my way from The Catlins to my next home exchange at Mainholme Lodge. Sandi and Graham run this Heritage house as a B+B and also I had their cottage at Pudding Island on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin as part of the exchange. The house was very “old” for NZ and beautifully restored and tastefully decorated…I loved the original handpainted friezes around the ceilings and the Italian silk wallpapers hung by Sandi. So for a couple of nights I wallowed in this luxury …but I couldn’t really get carried away by it all – I know my place ( downstairs not upstairs)– as on ... read more

Written Wednesday 16th March Left Invercargill in the pouring rain on Tuesday morning – and started my tour of The Catlns area – (coast and inland area at the very bottom of NZ) – it was cold and blustery as I visited at lighthouse and the site of one of the worst shipwrecks in NZ history- but there was hope as I could see the odd bit of blue sky and there on the far side of the beach I sighted a sealion through the binocs- more to come . Next stop a fossilised forest on an edge down the cliffs - easy to get to with stairs down there and lo and behold a little yellow eyed penguin sitting on its nest too hidden in the bush. This is a great example of a fossilised ... read more

A Slice of Kiwi Life Bottom end of New Zealand- sorry not keeping in touch much lately – you will get this when I can get on line- not much internet around here, and no mobile fone signals and even no ATMs!!! Reporting From Invercargill 10th – 14th March My aim was to get to the furthest south I could and I made it last Saturday to Stewart Island which is off the southern coast of the South Island. Nothing between there and Antarctica. Rosslyn in Queenstown had friends who have a sheep farm outside of Invercargill- town on South Coast – who very kindly said I could stay with them- and so it was I stayed with the Duffs – Jill and John. I keep saying it that the people I have met here are ... read more

After a cup of coffee to fortify myself I will now put the second batch of fotos on - these of my overnight stay at Manapouri Lake and next day trip to Doubtful Sound. Doubtful Sound is named by James Cook ( who else??) who on seeing it was reluctant to take his ship in as he was "doubtful" he could sail it out again given the prevailing westerly winds....he was probably right. Enjoy the fotos. Lv Lynne... read more

Writing Wednesday 9th March Here I am and taking Sue’s advice that my writing doesn’t have to be an “Orange Prize” effort. What matters is keeping in touch and also having a record of my travels… and thanks for all your messages – lovely to have them. It is now 2 weeks since the earthquake and of course I have done lots in those 2 weeks. ( Just an update – Diane and Dave in Christchurch report that they now have power – but still no water – she was happy to be vacuuming she said- I guess you would be happy to be doing anything with electricity !!!)It has been great to be with Marilyn and Terry and also Angela (from Sydney) was with us for the week we had at the resort in Wanaka. ... read more

Hello folks Just thought I would write a few words in case anyone is still worrying about me. I am ok but suffering a case of writers block in addition to not having had much access to the internet. We (that's me Marilyn Terry and Angela) have had a good week at Wnaka Lake -a lovely resort...so being in the hot tub and the beautiful scenery- quite a lot of wine has helped us in the aftermath of the earthquake. Of course we cant help thinking about those who are struggling there and those who have lost family and friends. In fact Rosslyn who we are staying with has a great niece killed - whoses body has just been found. So its hard to be flippant and humorous as I was in the blog earlier. So ... read more

Thank you all so much for the messages - it is a very strange lot of emotions we are going through now - on one level we are trying to act normally and at the same time the news from Christchurch is still so harrowing. And we feel exhausted all the time. Our drive down here - we took 2 days and stayed in cabins in campsites - which were lovely. A little side trip down off the main road yesterday had us picknickning at the foot of Mount Cook- and the clouds cleared so we did see the summit. One of the effects of the Quake was a HUGE bit of the Tasman Glacier fell off into the feeder lake - and I think we could see the effects of that in Lake Punaki ( ... read more
