Hello everyone It was a good idea to book a window seat for my afternoon flight here- flying over the Alps and then down the coast of Italy I could see Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples with Capri and then over Sicily – there was Mount Etna. And in the arrivals hall massive hugs from my lovely Richard and Catherine – just what I have been waiting for these past 7 months. Their apartment in Sliema is a penthouse on 6th floor with 2 terraces at the front and back – so great views over the rooftops to the harbour and across to Valletta. They live on a main street in Sliema and you can walk in a few minutes to the end of the Point to a nice new shopping mall or walk to ... read more

Hello everyone Before the dust well and truly settles on the Olympics' and Paralympics' success let me add my two-penn'orth. I had a most wonderful week at the Paralympics with 5 tickets for events spread out over several days. This was a well planned operation - I had got these tckets in the first round when everyone else was poo-pooing whether Great Britain would be able to pull it off. Not daunted and ever optimistic I applied for 6 tickets having at the time no idea where the Olympic Park was or how I would get there etc. So then I got it - 6 events to go to ( as it turned out I couldn't go to the rowing due to Tracie's birthday do which was a top priority for me). Next step was mapping ... read more

We have had 2 wonderful days with sunny blue skies, also lovely and warm. So driving about 20 minutes from our house is Tyresta National Park and with the help of Sally Satnav we took a country road out to the coastline. Boots on we set off for a pretty good hike through meadows, forest trails and eventually to a small still lake...then back again to have a sumptuous picnic sitting on rocks overlooking the sea...and some boats in a marina. Then yesterday we were up early and taking the metro into the city to get down to the Quay and take a boat trip out into the archilpelago. Stockholm has 30,000 ( I think I read that somewhere) small islands in the archilpelago. WE picked this particular cruise the Stromma Kanal cruise as it cuts ... read more

Good morning all It has to be done - each year we come to Sweden - we go to stay with Lars and Lillemor at the hostel/guest house they run at Omberg on Lake Vattern about 20 km from Vadstena ( a lovely town with a castle and a great cathedral on a Pilgrim Route.) The hostel is in an eco park, an ancient beech and oak forest on the rocky shores of one of Sweden's largest lakes. There are many trails for walkers and bikers and so lots of folk staying at the hostel, eating breakfast, the daily smorgasbord lunch buffet and eating oodles of snacks and cakes and icecream....and so we do our turn of duty helping out. By last year we had mostly sussed it out in the kitchen where everything was - ... read more

Hej folks ( that's me speaking swedish) Here I am with the lovely Lesey in a typical red wooden swedish house ( another house-swap) - perched up on a rocky hill surrounded by great tall trees and 10 mins walk to the nearest bit of lake. And to top it all when the swedish family arrived at my house the dismal english ( and swedish) weather changed and we have had sunny and hot days- with only a few rainstorms a couple of nights. The house is on the southern side of Stockholm and we can be on the metro and into the city in about 20 mins. Each time I come to Stockholm I love it - it is such a beautiful city on many islands , lovely architecture with so much greenery in parks ... read more

And so to our exploration of beautiful Siena, Cortona Montepulciano and the Chianti Region .... we toddled off every day in our little Fiat 500 - which Suzanne made me pay 3 euros a day extra - because it's a cute little car!!! other hilltop towns. As I said previously this countryside was all you wanted it to be - and to wander the narrow streets of the towns and villages was perfect-( walking on the shady side to keep out of the sun!!). Of course you have to stop for an iced coffee, a beer or a gelato now and then and watch the world go by. I love all the little shops in Italy - a whole shop selling scarves or gloves or knives - and in this region shops selling special hams and ... read more

There has been so much to see here and La Bandita is a good base to explore Tuscan hill towns and also the bigger cities of Siena and Florence. And so it was to Florence we drove yesterday...having decided that would be easier than gettng a train there which would have meant driving to another big city and parking there - so a bit of research on-line about parking places and a vague memory of the city from my previous visit as well as trusty old Sally - and we headed for Piazzale Michelangelo .... perfect free parking and the view from there is the classic view over the Arno . Yes it was hot but the narrow street give some shade and we were lucky to see a Hop on Bus immediatley which would take ... read more

Isn't life wonderful when all you are thinking is what kind of tree is this?.... I was loafing about in a chair in the shade ( very hot here) looking up at the beautiful blue sky through the shiny oval leaves- and something plops down beside me - it's a furry looking orangey-brown fruit and at first I thought it was an apricot - but it's hard so maybe its a hazelnut....must ask Palmyra , the owner of this beautiful Tuscan Locanda. How did we get here when only a week ago ( last Wednesday) I thought Suzanne and I were going to stay at Gloucester - visit Cotswolds and Bath... but that was cancelled and the weather being awful we thought why not get away to the sun... a fe whours later we were booked ... read more

Hello all Today I was up to London in Hampton Court - and not being mugged in the Philipines- I am sorry but my Yahoo account has been hacked - I have lost all emails and all contacts - so this blog is a good way to reach most of you. Thanks to everyone who might have thought it was true and showed concern by texting phoning or messaging me here...and given that Richard has been working in Manilla a couple of times - it was perfectly feasible that I might have been there!! Now it's aright mess to try and see if Yahoo can restore my account ....meanwhile I am changing all passwords etc ....maybe I shall use a Maori word - they are pretty unintelligible. Love bemused and confused me. xxx... read more
