Earthquake report. Written 24 Feb. 11 Thursday Hello dear family and friends I know you will have been waiting for more news from me since the earthquake struck Christchurch on Tuesday ..but as you will understand in the chaos there has been major disruption to all communications. We did have some mobile phone access we thought and tried to send quick messages to some of you to say we were okay. We then found later next day that some of those messages didn’t go through . But in any case the mobile phones have been a lifeline. It was the one day I actually did not have my phones with me …Marilyn ( my cousin) and Terry had just arrived in Christchurch on Monday afternoon…I picked them up and they were staying with me at Diane ... read more

Some days I just forget where I am and have to recount or look at a map for where I have been!! So I am in a campsite in my little camper ( loaned to me by Dave's friend Ian - thanks Ian) and I have driven up the East coast from Christchurch in horrible weather- grey clouds turning to windy and lashing down rain... not much stopping there ( its the place where you can go to sight whales- but not that day)- however seals dont seem to mind the weather and there they were sitting in groups on the rocks as I passed by. But turning the corner at the top of the Island and patches of blue sky became a gorgeous sunny afternoon and.evening. As usual interesting views - farmland , vineyards... hills ... read more

Written Christchurch 13 Feb. 11 {Less of the complaining, Bob, about me doing quickie blogs -don't let all the pies go to your head!!! Is Prill letting you eat 'em...I have never had so many pies in my life.} AS you can see from the fotos I had picked the best side of the plane to sit on the flight from Wellington to Christchurch – so if anyone does it sit on the right side of the plane for stunning vies of the South Isalnd coast as you fly in just 45 mins to the South Island. The Christchurch airport is a bit chaotic at the mo as they are obviously building new bits to prepare for the Rugby World Cup later this year –so there are temporary exits ( Marilyn and Terry we will have ... read more

Haha - yes today I was in Eastbourne...confused?? No I am not back home but I took a train then a bus to Eastbourne NZ, which is pretty close to Wellington - then I got a boat back across the harbour then andother train...and tomorrow it will be a plane and I will sadly be saying goodbye to my lovely Wellington family and the North Island. And it will be hello South Island and Chrsitchurch. This will have to be a quickie blog as it is almost midnight - I have been packing and what a mess I seemed to have after a month here travelling without really having to worry about everything being neatly packed into my 2 cases for the plane!! We all had a yummy farewell NZ lamb roast dinner and I think ... read more

I am getting lazy - no blogging this week....so before you start to get withdrawal symptons I better get up dated. So a week in Wellington has gone something like this- Monday - Zealandia. Teenage Ben took me to this place which is a 500 year project ( thats long term planning!!!) to restore a valley to its original state. (BEFORE HUMANS INVADED) so they have fenced it off to exclude any nasties like cats, ferrets , rabbits and they are introducing native widlife - birds and reptiles and planting native bush - getting rid of weeds and introduced species. So we saw some lovely birds , sweet little lizards etc and how nice there are no snakes here to watch out for as we trotted around. There is an interesting exhibition too and it's a ... read more

Yes it is the capital - not Auckland- and it is said also to be the windy city - but I was lucky enough to see the harbour looking like glass on my first drive round tour. The family where I am staying have lovely kids ( 2 of them 17 and 19yrs)- and they are happy to be my tour guides while mum and dad are working and it doesnt look like they have been coerced or bribed to do it (young people can be sooo lovely ) - so Jac took me for a grand day out. Up and up and up we went to Mount Victoria to the lookout - a city on water is always fabulous and back by these very steep mountainous hills Wellington is quite stunning. The main part of ... read more

Thursday Morning I wish the Kiwis had named their Islands something different cos it gets confusing driving South in the North and going North in the South - I am sure they could have come up with a couple of good Maori names. Or maybe I am getting travel fatigue as you say , Janice!! My Suzanne has gone off on the Ferry from Wellingotn to Picton this morning to begin her adventure on her own in the South Island. I am keeping my fingers crossed that she will have some good weather as she has a very tight schedule so no time to hang around waiting for the sun to shine. But she has planned it well and now has an emergency poncho to wear in case it rains heavily - not exactly a fashion ... read more

Written on Monday posted on Tuesday - even more confused. Am in the i-Site - working against the clock to get these blogs published...still raining!!! Well we ate the fudge and all the crisps and the rain didn’t stop –some very high water levels in the lake and rivers, some flooding and lots of mini landslides and tree branches on the roads…we did have a lot of rain. Ever hopeful we have fingers crossed that the worst is over and tomorrow will be a better day. However rain doesn’t stop play here and we have had some really good times. Last night was our Maori evening at the Mitai village – so on with the rain jackets and boots ( I knew they would come in handy at somepoint!!) - off we went to be entertained ... read more

Written on Saturday - posted Tuesday - just to confuse me!! We arrived at our next home exchange yesterday – Friday. It is a lovely cottage at Okere Falls overlooking Lake Rotoiti…we are in the Rotorua area which is well known for thermal activity…there are many places where you can experience boiling streams, steam and gas vents ( fumaroles) and geysers, bubbling mud pools and all sorts of other volcanic activity going on…and a chemistry lesson in minerals being deposited. So "steamy" does not refer to any "goings on" none of that likely I'm afraid - but everywher you look there is steam coming up out of cracks in the earth - and boiling streams and lakes. And although it is smelly in places it is not too bad without a peg on the nose too. ... read more
