October 27, 2009 - Nazca I forgot to mention that we stopped off at a small winery yesterday where we sampled some of the wines made here. Though at 40%, they were more like spirits than wines and with nothing to eat since breakfast, I was a little pissy. After a very full dy yesterday, today was about the Nazca Lines - and maybe a few other things nearby. Before dinner last night, we attended the Naza Observatory for a briefing on the many theories about how the lines came to be and more interesting, why were they made? The theory that seems to be most widely accepted, is that over a period of 80 years, the lines, shapes and pictograms were made to mark out important dates - change of seasons - and also as ... read more

Pisco - 7:00am I am still struggling to get a solid night´s sleep over here - I´m not sure if it´s all the noise (car horns beeping, dogs barking, roosters crowing, etc - or if it´s to do with having a heightened alertness to ensure that I respond quickly to situations of attempted kidnapping, theft or earthquake. It´s about 7:30am when most of the group board a bus to take us to a little port town where we will then board a boat to take us to the Ballestas Islands - those staying behind have been or will go to the Galapagos. The Ballestas Islands are a group of three islands that have an abundance of wildlife, mostly birds, and an absence of humans due to the lack of their being any fresh water as there ... read more

Again, I am tired but this time it´s due to the amount of activites rather than the changing times and dates! We are now in Pisco which was about a 4 hour drive from Lima. Despite the somewhat smaller population size and less ´refined´streets and public areas, the now familiar sounds of car horns and car alarms is still an ever present, constant noise! Earlier today, set out from ´Hostal Pukara´via public bus (!) to the city heart of Lima. The bus ride itself was an eye opener - or closer depending on the situation. Not only did we frequently and narrowly avoid colliding with other vehicles, mostly buses, but driving along the main road highlighted the extent of those that have and those that have not - so many beggars and the quality of homes ... read more

October 24 - Lima, Peru 11:05am Despite a somewhat "interrupted" sleep last night, I´m feeling even more excited abou the tour now that I´ve met three of my fellow travellers - there will be 9 of us in total. Richard, a Canadian living in London is my room-mate in what is the third room I´ve been in since arriving, Aine (pronounced On-ya) is an Irish lass from Dublin and Megan is a fellow Aussie hailing from Newcastle. We´reabout to head into downtown Lima for a bit of a lok around and lunch before we meet up with all but two of the remaining travellers we´ll be spending the next three weeks with. October 24 - Lima, Peru 3:45pm The first thing I noticed on our trip to downtown Lima, specifically Miraflores, I noticed the number of ... read more

October 23 - Lima, Peru 11:27am After nearly 10 hours sleep, I awoke with a much better feeling about travelling here alone - although I really should have studied more Spanish! Breakfast finished at 11:00am which I managed to make with 15 minutes to spare. It was very basic - bread, bananas, coffee and the sweetest orange juice I´ve ever tasted - but it did the trick! I´m now sitting in the courtyard between the two buildings that make up the "Hostal Pukara". It´s a lot cooler than I thought it would be, especially in board shorts and a t-shirt. I´ve decided against doing a tour of the city today as we´re doing tomorrow, in a group, which sounds like a safer option in a foreign city with population of 8 million! Instead, I´m going to ... read more

October 23rd - Lima, Peru 1:09am I´ve finally arrived at my starting point for my big adventure and honestly, driving through this city with the obvious poverty and less than comforting appearence of homes with high fences, some electrified, and bars on all their windows leaves me with the question, "Why am I doing this alone?!". Yes, this is something that I´ve wanted to do for a long time and I really am excited about the actual tour, I guess I´m a little unsettled being half-way around the world in a place so different to home, alone, and very, very tired - it´s now been 32 hours since I departed Brisbane!! The place I´m stying at for the next few nights, "Hostal Puraka", is modest and clean and thankfully, has private bathrooms (although in the state ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago October 22nd 2009

October 22, 2009 - Santiago, Chile 4:30pm Four hours have lapsed with little more than a nap on some 1980´s styled seats in the departure lounge. Needless to say my back is a little sore and the massage booth 5 metres away is looking very inviting but with 5 more hours to go, I think it would be redundant! Walking around the airport and the surounding landscape, the entire place is surrounded by mountains/hills - it kind of reminds me of Queenstown in New Zealand. Sort of. I´ve just noticed a fire burning in a building near the end of the runway - I´m sure it´s nothing!... read more

Ocober 22, 12:30pm Santago, Chile I am tired beyond anything that I have ever been and I´m yet to begin the final leg of the journey to Lima, Peru - the starting point of my adventure! But before I venture further, I must go bak to the beginning of this much hyped and highly anticipated trip.... The feeling that I´m actually doing this ebbs and flows and it wasn´t until I peered out the window on the plane and gazed upon the sunlight sparkling on the water below that it dawned on me - I was on my way to Peru! Yes, the dazzling sight below that was "The Brown" (Brisbane River) at it´s mouth near Fisherman´s Island made me ponder, "Will I ever return to this place?" Sure, plenty of tourtists embark on journeys of ... read more
