Flying into Carcassonne airport we made out way to a little town outside Quillan, in the Languedoc Roussilon region in the South of France. After a couple of days, i soon discovered my French was worse than basic and my 'wrong side of the road' driving was also a bit dodgy. "Parlez-Vous Anglais?" - the answer to this question would determine the length of my conversation, the amount of hand gestures involved and speed/volume at which i would speak at (because speaking loudly, slowly and waving hands about naturally helps with the language barrier..and isn't annoying in the slightest). Despite my language/driving limitations we headed out to explore the cathare country, lakes and countryside. Amongst all our exploring we did manage to paint the house and ourselves (one of the reasons for our trip) and some ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Perth January 31st 2014

Having spent the majority of our trip on the East Coast partying, exploring and err…partying, we flew over to the West Coast. Thinking Australia couldn’t get any more expensive, we landed in Perth. Arriving in Perth, it was cold and wet but refreshing to be in a new place. We spent the next few months working -yes, I haven’t forgotten how. We were worked in a swimming pool shop testing water samples and selling chemicals - might be a bit of a stretch to add chemist to my resume now! To relieve the stress of working an almost full time job (I said, almost) we escaped to some beautiful beaches, went on trips to gorgeous islands, wineries and some 4 wheel driving - and yes Mum, i wore my seatbelt. My first Christmas away from home, ... read more

With a couple of months camping, hostelling and sleeping on friends sofas, we drove 40 minutes up the road to Palm Cove for some 'luxury' in a Novotel apartments. In 30 degrees, the air con was the biggest luxury. We spent the next week visiting the fish on the Great Barrier Reef and the remote outback towns. Despite having rented a lovely apartment, we roughed it in the bush camping for a night or two. With 2 weeks touring around, we had pushed George as far as he would go, we left him at a recycling plant to be repaired for another lucky driver (or that's what they told me..). After George was 'put down', we moved onto the confines of a camper van and made our way from Mission Beach to Brisbane stopping along the ... read more

For those of you who haven't met George, he is 26, Tasmanian, gold and doesn't like mornings. For those of you who have, you will know he is unreliable, ugly (sorry George) and incredibly messy - a bargain at $750. George's first trip began successfully (well as good as could be expected for $750) and made it the grand total of 1 day before he decided to make noises and smells that signalled his death. Having been sensible and taken George on a small first trip on busy roads with constant traffic to stop and help if (i mean when) he broke down. No. Instead we drove hundreds of miles onto a dirt track (what were we thinking?!) where we were stuck with the basic car skills of opening the bonnet, peering inside and swearing. Having ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns July 21st 2013

Four months since arriving in Cairns, it's fair to say we have drank and partied too much and saved very little money (who am I kidding? Saved NO money). Having been fired from first restaurant job for not smiling enough - I'm sure that can't be right (well, there may have been a few broken glasses too...), I have moved onto a new job, housekeeping. I know what you're thinking, living the dream eh? Ha yes, I have those thoughts everyday whilst cleaning hotel rooms. However, I am reassured my Business Management degree is being put to good use. When I'm not working I lead a pretty hectic life. I've managed to travel to some small Aussie villages that consist of a general store and a pub - what more do you need? We've camped in ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns April 17th 2013

Escaping the 'bad' weather in Melbourne we headed north. However, after days of constant rain, we were fast losing interest in Cairns. Running out of things to do in the rain we booked a waterfall tour (on the premise we couldn't get any wetter) and spent the day seeing the green rainforest and swimming in the waterfalls. Little did we know, we were following in the (famous?) footsteps of Peter Andre (remember that music video?) and the Herbal Essence commercial! Just as our tans (and smiles) were fading, it was blue skies and 36 degrees. The busy malls were emptied and the once quiet lagoon was filled with backpackers soaking up the sun, swimming and having BBQ's. With Cairns being one of the top backpacker destinations, there are a mixture of accents (mainly English, German and ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mornington Peninsula April 9th 2013

A few weeks into our Australian experience and we haven't made it past Victoria. Distracted by the mostly nice weather (we've gotten a bit fussy now), local vineyards and never ending beaches we forgot our plans for finding work (ok, our memories not that bad) and instead had a great holiday! After all, we couldn't leave Victoria without seeing a koala. Luckily for our friends (who we were meant to stay with for only a few days), we spotted our first koala a few days ago in a tree by the road - a missed photo opportunity unfortunately. Local pubs sit in every town with green surrounding gardens and live music playing. Driving between the towns, there are a number of vineyards each with their own restaurant and wine tasting. Living with a local, our time ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Mornington Peninsula March 28th 2013

Touching down at Tulemarine Airport in Melbourne we headed through the city and south towards the Mornington Peninsula. The sunny skies of Australia marked our second continent and the main part of our trip. In our time here we've enjoyed the long sandy beaches, wine country (it would be rude not to) and checked out the local wildlife. On an unsuccessful trip exploring, we tried to see the dolphins (which were hiding) and despite hearing there were koalas in peoples gardens, there were none in the koala reserve we visited (also hiding). Although we did say hello to a kangaroo in the fields on Philip Island. Melbourne's sky scrapers are surrounded by green parks and cute lanes filled with nice cafes and bars. In Melbourne where free is a practically unheard word, we managed to find ... read more

Asia » Singapore March 19th 2013

From Sri Lanka to Singapore, we crossed the line dividing the Sri Lankan Rupee and the Singapore Dollar, the cheap with the expensive and the chaotic with well, a different kind of chaos. From the ramshackle streets of Sri Lanka we arrived in the clinically clean and organised, busy world of Singapore. With a fast and efficient train line, getting from A to B was a lot easier (and airconditioned) than the buses in Sri Lanka. Everywhere we explored, there was mass of people - tourists trying to navigate the subways and locals rushing to work. We explored Orchard Road for the (window) shopping, China Town for great food, Little India for the markets and Sentosa Island for the beach. Doing Singapore on the cheap has its difficulties. Instead of staying at the Marina Bay Sands ... read more

Asia » Sri Lanka » Central Province » Kandy March 13th 2013

Three weeks - no chocolate, no coffee & no wine (well one glass doesn't really count, right?). Instead we have had Sri Lankan cuisine which, like the weather is pretty hot! From noodle dishes to fresh sea food, to curries that make your eyes water, we've had a feast! We've tried Sri Lankan Kottu Rotti which is chopped up pancake mixed with vegetables and a curry sauce (it tastes a lot nicer than it sounds!). Less successfully we tried the tradition curd dessert, which as the name suggests is in fact just curdled milk, served with treacle (presumably to mask the taste of the curd). We tried and failed to taste 'hoppers' - yeah, we dont know what they are either. In most places we found cheap bakeries which had vast selections of delicious pastries, although ... read more
