Continued through to Manning Gorge, got there on dark and didn’t see the signs to say “Coach Parking Only” and we parked in that section. Oh well, we weren’t the only ones. Two other cars that broke down on way to Mitchell Falls arrived after us. Went to do the walk to Manning Gorge and the Falls. The path was overgrown and the only other way was to swim across to the other side and then walk. 8am was too early for a swim and only 18°C. Skipped it and drove to King Leopold Conservation Park. Went into Bell Gorge (and saw another Ulty). It was a 3km round trip. Nice walk, but rocky. You walk into the gorge, cross the river at the top of the falls, climb the rocks on the other side and ... read more

Continued down Gibb River Road and stopped at Ellenbrae Station (owned by Grollo’s) for Devonshire tea. Huge scone was enough for lunch. Left about 2.20pm for King Edward River. Got stuck behind a Britz car for a while and arrived around 6.10pm - Dark. Set up, had tea and spoke to a couple that drove to Mitchell Falls for the day and back and left their camper at King Edward River. A nice couple from East Kew offered to lend us their spare tent if we wanted to leave our camper behind, but we only had a doona for us and no bed rolls. Had a relaxing day by the river and people we met the night before had a kayak and let the kids have a couple of rides in it. Rod & I after ... read more

Drove to Wyndham to get our mail that Mum had Express Post to us. Took a photo of the Cyclone Status Sign. Have a few in the area. Stayed at the Caravan Park and they had a friendly Bush Donkey in residence. Actually standing in one of the sites when we arrived. The kids had fun feeding him scraps. They are very casual in Wyndham. They said yep, $26 for the night, wont charge for the kids. Drive around the corner and pick a site. So we did. Had a tractor towing a caravan opposite (part of a convention). There was a giant Boab Tree at the park, over 2000 years old. Went to the wharf and 5 rivers lookout. Drove to Kununurra Information Centre. Booked a 6am flight over the Bungle Bungles and our accommodation ... read more

Saw the Magnetic Termite Mounds. The termites build these mounds flat, facing East and West and the skinny sides North/South. These mounds are built in the flood areas and get warmth from the morning sun, wait out the heat of the day in the middle of the mound and in the evening go to the West face to keep warm. Amazing smart termites. Florence Falls 4WD camp was full. Went back to Buley Rockhole and got the last camp site. Went and had a swim in the rockholes. One had a cascade that pelted onto your back and it was like a massage. Cooked thinly sliced potatoes on the BBQ plate, much nicer that the gas BBQ. More like chips. Had another swim early in the morning and saw a snake on the path as we ... read more

Booked the car in (for Friday) at ARB for a snorkel as the air filter was getting dirty and we had lots of dirt roads to go. Got an 8 stage battery charger as we could not get enough charge into the camper battery, the car alternator is 80amp so we may look at increasing its size maybe with a Landcruiser alternator if it fits. At the moment the alternator is trying to run (i) the car battery; (ii) camper battery; (iii) camper fridge; (iv) battery pack. It’s just not coping. We will see how it goes. Saw East Point Reserve and Military Museum where Darwin set up to protect during WWII. The cost of the guns and in the end were sold to the Japanese for scrap metal for 20% of the price. Darwin was ... read more

We finally made it to Kakadu. In the morning we went to Bowali Visitors Centre to get an area map and find out which River Cruise to do. Bought a Didgeridoo then headed to Jabiru. Booked a 3pm East Alligator Cruise, checked emails at the Tourist Bureau. Bakery sold out at 12.30pm, except for Kangaroo Pies. Had sandwiches at Lake. Crocodile warning signs everywhere. On way to River Cruise - went across Cahill River Crossing in car to Arnhem Land, whoops missed the sign that says you need a permit. Turned around and came straight back. Saw lots of crocodiles on Cruise. Had a spear throwing demo/Culture Talk in Arnhem Land. Went to Ubirr Rock Art Site and saw the sunset and another ranger talk about the flood plains and Kakadu. Late back so had tea ... read more

Sunday morning and yes we all went to a market (can’t get homesick that way). Todd Street Mall is transformed into a market with imported, craft, veggies and Aboriginal Art. Had lunch at Botanical Gardens - lots of wattles, very dry. Saw Anzac Hill, views all over Alice. Had an easy afternoon by the pool - kids’ choice instead of Desert Park. Went to Post Office first thing to collect replacement spas for kids’ swags. Got yoga matting to replace cardboard on rear windscreen. Filled up fuel and headed North. Went past Tropic of Capricorn marker. Ti Tree for lunch. Stopped at Wycliffe Well, the UFO capital. Arrived at Devils Marbles at 4pm and it was already busy. Indigenous Ranger talk and watched a DVD. Found out how to find a Witchetty Grub (Alex is psyching ... read more

Left at 8.50am - earliest so far. Saw Henbury Meteorites and some Wedge-tailed eagles up close in their natural habitat (eating road kill). Saw our first Ultimate on the way to Uluru/Ayers Rock. Stopped at Curtin Springs - free! Got up at 5am and roused the kids to leave by 5.40am. Watched sunrise at Ayers Rock. Drove around, but Mala Walk/Climb for Ayers Rock closed due to wind at summit. Went to cultural centre then on to Olgas. They are massive and did the Valley of the Winds Walk. Kate and Gill only got half way, went back had lunch and played some educational games while waiting for Alex & Rod to finish. Drove to Yulara for IceCream and to kill time awaiting sunset. Took lots of photos, each one varying from the last. Got back ... read more

We got to the Toyota dealership in Alice Springs and paid for the replacement rear windscreen $796 (thanks for coming) and arranged to drop the car off on Thursday morning to be fixed. We walked into Alice town centre whilst the car was being fixed and we bumped into Amy & Owen (met them at Chambers Pillar, they are from Berwick) - they were waiting for replacement clutch, which broke in Alice Springs and were waiting for parts to arrive. Picked up car and got cardboard to cover new rear windscreen. Went to see School of Air - very interesting. Bought groceries, did washing - boring. Kids had a swim in pool at Caravan Park. Got to 27° again today. Getting warmer. Headed out to East Macdonell Ranges, set up camp at Trephina Gorge. Went to ... read more

Arrived at the “Pink Roadhouse”, Oodnadatta for lunch. Had a bite to eat and followed their instructions as to tyre pressure for the road to Dalhousie (even rougher than the Oodnadatta Track). 20km out from Oodnadatta we had a strange sound to pull over and find the rear windscreen with a small hole and the rest of it shattering. While Rod was cleaning up I got to pull out the trusty Sat Phone and called Mum to get it touch with our local Toyota dealer and to arrange for a replacement to be sent to Alice Springs. Well thank you very much Frankston Toyota for arranging all of this - and for ringing us back to save us the phone bill. I dread to think what the boss will think when he gets the bill!
