Took photos of “Krys” the 8.63m replica of the biggest crocodile ever caught. Checked with the council office as to the road conditions and advice on way to get to Peninsula Development Road. One of the ways that the Information Office told us, the river was too high to cross, so only 2 options open, instead of 3. Uploaded travelblogs before we left town. Went to Karumba and looked around. Saw an Ulti at Sunset Caravan Park - they waved. Took a long time at the souvenir shop, for Kate to choose her purchase, finally. On way out of town we topped up with fuel and got icy poles. Drove along Burke Development Road for 230km and watched some branding at Dunbar Station. We took the turnoff for Kowanyama & camped by the Mitchell River. The ... read more

Today was much warmer and the kids wanted to stay another day, so we agreed as long as their journals and reading was done before lunch. After much procrastinating it was done & gave the computer to the caretakers to charge up for us. The day was much warmer and it was “water day”, which mean the generator for the water pump was on all day until 4pm, instead of only 1hr, but also meant the sprinklers were on for 2 hours. After lunch I picked up Kate and ran with her under the sprinkler. Once she was wet, we ran in and out for 30 minutes or so. Even conned Rod & Alex into going under as well. Chatted to our camping neighbours - they sold their house and have been traveling for 4 years, ... read more

Fuelled up and drove to Winton, stopped for a hat pin for Alex and while Kate was trying to choose a glass heart keyring, bumped into Richard and Di (the Ulty owners from Townsville). They are camped out at Bladensburg NP right by the river. Followed them out of town and set up - beautiful. There were other kids swinging on a river and jumping in the river. Kate and Alex looked on dubiously until Alex finally plucked up the courage. He loved it. Kate decided to swing, but not go in the water, so only had her t-shirt and shorts on. She let go of the stick to readjust, and fell like a stone into the water. Screamed her head off, it was pretty cold and she didn’t want to get wet. I was so ... read more

Well we wandered around town, sort of like a getting to know you before all the shops shut on Saturday, not to reopen again until Monday - including the bakery! Anyway the tyre place said our tyre wont be in before Wednesday round 9am’ish. Got a few groceries and went back to camper for lunch and some homework by the kids. Went into the heated spa around 4pm, so understandably cold when it was time to get out. It was nice to have mobile phone service to touch base with home. Sunday had pancakes and poetry at the caravan park then went to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame. Lots and lots to read, with poor lighting to read by. We felt it a bit over rated, more about the pioneers than the shearers. Alex got himself ... read more

Packed up camp and on recommendation went to the Working Museum at Birdsville. A real character ran a show on all the machines from 1970’s back to the 1800’s. Old fridges, washing machines, carbine lamp, old irons, huge biscuit tins, when you bought then by weight. It was mind boggling. Met two other Ultimate Campers and their owners, both were heading in different directions. The racetrack is just all dirt, but the Birdsville Races attract around 5,000 people come September. Apparently you have to queue for fuel when it is time to leave. Left late morning and stopped at Chubby Creek for lunch. Continued on the road - it is a really good road, fresh crushed rock and being graded. Unfortunately when someone passed you, depending on the wind, you got covered in dust and couldn’t ... read more

Left Broken Hill and halfway to Tibooburra (in the North Western Corner of NSW) time got changed back to Eastern Standard Time (normal for Melbourne). It is very weird in the outback! Roads were pretty rough, there was bitumen leading to the cattle grids and in between were gibbers, red or grey sand, it kept on changing without rhyme or reason. There were salt and clay pans and the scrub disappeared to spinifex then nothing - just dirt and rocks. Came upon dry creek beds and they had Gum Trees managing to grow in them. Filled up at Tibooburra fuel $1.51pl. Continued on to Sturt National Park and set up at Fort Grey Campground around 2.30pm. Was glad to change into shorts, got to 25°. Kids did some Math, Time and English. Cooked early tea and ... read more

Well, we got away a bit later than expected, but made good time. We stayed at Poplitah Lake Rest Area for the first night (137km’s south of Broken Hill). Saw lots of wild goats along the way. The kids made “seed” notes in their diary and after we set up they wrote in their journals - even though not much to write about, except the boring scenery. The Nintendo’s got a workout. After tea, Alex read to himself and Kate read to Rod, whilst Gill had to do dishes (some things never change). A chapter of Deltora Quest was read to both of them, before Gill fell into bed for a well earned sleep. There is a new mine opened up just down the road and the road trains were going backwards and forwards all night ... read more

Decided to set up at Cosy Corner West. The Camps 4 book says you can camp there, but there is a no camping sign, but we think it referred to the November to April season - very confusing. It was on the foreshore behind the grass and trees. Fairly sheltered, but on the beach the waves were crashing and thumping all day and night. Walked up the steps to see the view over King George Sound, very nice. The kids played on the sand and rocks, running across before and after the waves. Drove into Albany and went to The Gap and Natural Bridge. They had platforms up as viewing areas. At The Gap, there were waves coming in and crashing up 30m, but thankfully not as bad as yesterday where the car park had water ... read more

We drove inland through Donnybrook (apple country), Bridgetown and Manjimup. Stopped at Diamond Tree - 52m high with a lookout on top. Unfortunately raining and 5.30pm so we didn’t climb it. Continued to Pemberton and camped at Big Brook Arbitorium. It had rained most of the way down and we had to set up in the rain. After Kate’s swag was done, we decided that it was too wet for the kids, with water running in streams along the ground. So we grabbed Kate’s doona and pillow and set ourselves up in the King size bed with 2 Queen Doonas and 3 pillows between 4 of us. It was very snug and poor Rod got kicked and elbowed by Alex. We found out that besides snoring, Alex also grinds his teeth. Kate grinds her teeth a ... read more

We have been so lucky as to be able to stay at a friend’s beach house in Rockingham. We set up in their backyard, and Margaret and Ralph arrived on Saturday morning to open the house and deactivate the alarm. It was lovely to have a home base for a while and to the kids delight a TV! Saturday afternoon was spent wrapping Father’s Day presents and relaxing. The kids got up early to surprise Rod, but what they don’t realise is we hear them thumping up the camper steps. Anyway Rod scored well, with DVD, new billy, camp toaster, chocolate and socks. Everything had to be able to fit in to travel home. The kids set about doing some writing and we went out to explore around Rockingham. Found a nice old Tudor hotel in ... read more
