Today it was POURING rain out. We didn’t even want to go outside. Meike read while I job searched for most of the day. I emailed a hostel in Picton where you can work for your accommodations and they emailed me back right away to let me know that I can come anytime I want. I will go there on October 14th and get out of Windy Welly and off to the South Island!! We went out to the supermarket which is only a 5 minute walk and got soaked! So you guessed it, after dinner we watched another movie haha.... read more

Walked into town and looked around at a couple of shops before heading for some lunch. Mom, I had eggs benedict which was good but no where near as good as yours!!! We headed to Te Papa museum which is free. It's a huge museum with 6 floors of stuff to look at and a few interactive things. There is a section on Maori culture and polynesian culture. They also have a giant squid that is preserved in some liquid. I couldn't get a good picture of it but it's HUGE. We walked around there until our feet hurt and we couldn't take it anymore. Made some dinner at the hostel and then met the germans in our room and drank some wine with them. They have really good wine here!!!... read more

If anyone has ever told you that Wellington is a also known as Windy Welly, they were right! It's SOOO windy here. All the time too, not just some days, everyday. It's ridiculous. Meike and I did a town walk to check out the town and ended up at the Beehive (their parliament building). It's called the beehive because that's exactly what it looks like. Wellington is the capital of NZ so all the government buildings are there. We stopped for lunch before walking up the famous Cuba Street. It's a street with a bunch of cafes and shops and is kind of trendy. We were tired from not getting any sleep the night before on our crappy hostel's beds so we headed back to said crappy hostel and did laundry which was also crappy. The ... read more

Woke up to more snow and it was REALLY COLD. Ok, not as cold as Canada but when all you have are tshirts, a hoodie and a rainjacket...it's cold!! Due to the weather our bus couldn't leave at 9 am as planned. We were able to leave by 10 am though. One thing i've noticed about New Zealand is that each town loves to have a big statue of something that represents the town. So, i've seen the giant kiwi, and the giant Lemon and Peoria bottle and a giant apple. But today I got to see a giant carrot and a giant gumboot (rubber boot). We didn't stop at the gumboot but we did stop at the carrot so I got a pic of it. It's fascinating to see so many giant things in one ... read more

Made some breakfast, watched the snow going crazy and really felt like I was back at home haha. Today I did a lot of reading, read most of my book, watched another movie, the next stray bus came in and a guy from Edmonton was put in my room. Always fun haha. Made our dinner early which was lucky since the power went out again but this time it wasn't coming back on. We sat by one of the fires to stay warm. Matt, an Aussie guy who was working on the ski hill for the winter decided to try to toast his bread in the fire. It was quite entertaining to watch. I can't remember how it got brought up but I said something about touques and he had a good laugh and thought I ... read more

Woke up to pouring rain. It was miserable out. Not only was it raining but it was SOOO COLD!! Well, not cold like Canada but cold when you're not expecting it and have no proper clothes for it! We just hung out at the hostel trying to stay warm, by the way NZ doesn't have very good heating systems!!! Had some lunch, looked out the window and saw snow...yep...snow. Was not expecting that! We watched another movie, had dinner and then the power kept shutting off and turning back on and then shut off for a good hour. The hostel had to close their bar and kitchen so it was a pretty quiet night.... read more

Well my lovely brother decided to finally text me back but did it at 5 am and woke up everyone in my room haha. Packed up this morning and had breakfast. We weren't sure what time the stray bus was coming to get us so we stuck around the hostel and waited. Not so fun haha. It finally came at 10:30am. We stopped for some lunch and a picture stop on the other side of lake Taupo and then drove into Tongariro Park. There are 3 volcanoes in the area, one of them is Mount Doom from the Lord of the Rings movies. At the base of one volcano is a chateau where the cast of the movies stayed for 3 months. It's the second most expensive place to stay in New Zealand. Tongariro Park is ... read more

We stopped in town to mail some postcards and then started off on the coastal walk. It was pretty cold and cloudy but not raining. Lots of black swans, ducks and seagulls wandering around. Saw some baby ducks. There was a couple of really nice houses right on the lake overlooking it. I had to take a couple of pics. They probably cost a lot with the view they have. I got really tired of walking so I turned around and headed back to the hostel and Meike kept on walking. I listened to some of the Flames game on the radio on the internet which was pretty awesome. The flames were up 3-0 when Meike came back and we ran to get some groceries. We didn't do much tonight either. Got to love rainy days ... read more

Finally some sun!!!! We were so happy we threw on shorts and headed out to Huka falls. A 20 minute walk from our hostel to get to the start of the hike and then an hour and a half hike from there. We walked along the river on a trail to get there. The Huka falls are really just white water rapids. The wide river has to go through a narrow section which creates the falls. We did the long hike back and finished just as the clouds started coming in. Stopped for a quick lunch ( a meat pie from the bakery which are sooo good and super cheap!) Headed back to the hostel to shower and do laundry and write postcards. The exciting life of a backpacker haha. We watched another movie tonight because ... read more

Well it's another rainy day here in gorgeous New Zealand, although it feels more like i'm in Ireland at the moment. New Zealand is also very green for a reason it would seem. We had to move rooms so we moved our stuff and made some breakfast. The rain lightened up a bit so we went for a walk down to the lake but couldn't see much thanks to the clouds so we walked back in to town and found a small movie theatre just as it really started to pour so we ran in and paid to see the only movie playing at 11 am which was Year one. Not a good movie but it kept us entertained while it rained. It wasn't raining when we left but it was still cloudy. Walked to the ... read more
