Meike and I walked over to the geothermal park in the city but we were both so tired from the night before that neither of us had the energy to really walk around so we ended up going for a coffee, ate some lunch and then waited for our stray bus to pick us up. We were happy to see a small bus pull up to pick us up. We hopped on and met a variety of interesting people haha. We got in to Taupo and went to the skydiving place to watch a video and anyone who wanted to skydive got to pick out music for their dvd's and everything. But, in the end they weren't able to skydive due to bad weather. There was too many clouds and it started to rain which is ... read more

I dropped Meike off at an internet cafe and then took the car back. It was pouring rain all day so we ended up staying in the hostel and playing uno all day with a few other people. A couple of other german girls wanted to go out that night so we joined them and we walked to the Lava Bar. Not too busy in there but we ended up meeting a bunch of guys from Australia here on a yearly fishing trip. It was one of the guys birthday so we ended up getting free shots all night thanks to these guys haha. This one kiwi guy that was there who was very drunk kept trying to get us to dance with him but no one was dancing and we didn't want to dance with ... read more

We changed out clocks here last night. Since it's spring here and not fall we sprung ahead by an hour so now i'm 19 hours ahead of home, kinda weird! Anyways, we were up early to drive out to Wai-o-tapu which is 20 minutes drive from Rotorua and is a big geothermal park so lots of stinky geysers and all that kind of fun stuff. The lady knox geyser goes off at 10:15am everyday because the park puts surfactants in the geyser at that time which sets off the geyser, very smart. Bought out tickets and then drove over to the geyser. A park guide did a bit of a talk and then added the surfactant and set the geyser off. It was slow to go but it did shoot water up pretty high. Drove back ... read more

Well it's raining, again. Seems to be rainy season right now haha. Meike and I stopped in at a rental car place and ended up with a car for $49 for a day and a half because the lady didn't want to come in to work on sunday so she gave the car to us for an extra half a day. Score for us! It's a little blue toyota corolla. Sweet as! I drove the car and parked it at the Polynesian spa because we were going there later and had planned to meet up some girls from the hostel at the info centre. By the time they met up with us though it was pouring out and we were meant to do a walk around the city. So the four of ran back to the ... read more

Ate some breakfast at Uncle Boy's place before heading off on the bus to Rotorua. Another rainy day although we got a few moments of just cloudy skies. We stopped on the way at the big kiwi. Basically it's just a giant kiwi fruit haha. Meike and I got dropped off at our hostel and checked in. We are staying at a small hostel called Funky green backpackers. It's really nice and homey. We lucked out and got our room for a few nights at the same cost as a bigger dorm room. Yeah us! We walked into town after dropping our stuff in the room and headed for the info centre. Had some lunch at a noodle place where we had to eat with chopsticks. I somehow managed! After that we headed to a piercing ... read more

After the caving adventure we stopped for some lunch and then to an Angora Bunny place. We got to watch a poor little bunny get all his fur sheared off. These bunnies have so much fur that they would over heat and die if they don't get sheared regularly. Because their skin is wrinkled underneath all the fur the bunny has to stretched out and has his paws tied up and he can then be rotated and sheared all over. It was quite funny to see but you feel bad for it but they actually like it. Their fur is soooo soft and nice. Was tempted to but a scarf but I didn't. We then drove to Uncle Boy's place in Maketu. It's a small Maori village they have set up. We got there quite late ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves September 24th 2009

Another rainy day was what we woke up to but we all hopped on the bus to drive to a tiny place called Waitomo. There is not much to the town but motels and hotels because this is where all the caves are. In the 1800's the caves were open to the public and now guides take people into the caves to see the famed glow worms and do some adventure caving. Our driver dropped us off in Waitomo and we had to sign a medical form. That's never a good sign haha. But I did it anyways. Meike and I had decided to do the Tumu Tumu black water rafting adventure. Our small group was taken by van to a building in the middle of no where basically to get geared up. For those of ... read more

We woke up to a really really really rainy day and when it rains here in Raglan, there really is NOTHING to do. Everything is based around outdoor activities. So, we played some fooseball, watched a movie, played some tile rummy. The stray bus came in that afternoon so our small group of like 8 people at the hostel went to like 48 people. A really bis bus had come in quite full of people. So, we made dinner quickly before all 46 other people wanted to make theirs. It was still raining after dinner so we played some more tile rummy before bed. Not a very exciting day but on a good note I didn't spend any money today ... read more

Made some breakfast and was disappointed to see some clouds and rain. We had planned to go down to the beach. We ended up walking down to Manu bay to watch some of the surfers with a couple of other people. The van from the hostel then came and picked us up to take us into town. We sat a cafe and ate some cake and had a coffee before getting a few things for our dinner. The sun came back out so we got back to the hostel and sat in the hammocks again for a bit. There is a viewpoint they have here to walk to they call Inspiration point. You can see the ocean and a good view of the sunset so we walked there to see it but the clouds came back ... read more

Meike and I slept in for a bit this morning before heading down to make some breakfast. Sent an email home to everyone to let them know i’m alive since internet has been scarce and expensive. We decided to go on the bush walk that they have behind the hostel. But first we stopped at the flying fox they have set up here. A flying fox is just a zip line.Oh ya, to do the bush walk you have to get a map and put your names down on the chalk board incase you don’t come back they know to go look for you haha. Well the hike is really in the bushes, a very narrow trail and it’s super steep! Took us 3 hours to complete but it was cool walking through the forest. Made ... read more
