JuliaItaly - Julia Harencar

Despite my objections to blogs for their narcissistic nature, I have decided to write one during my year as a foreign exchange student in Italy. I will update it maybe once a week, and that way I minimize my time spent sending informative emails, and I have a little public record of my trip. I hope it's entertaining!

SO SORRY I haven't written in so long, time just got away from me completely, I didn't even realize it had been so long!! I will start by saying... I BOUGHT SHOES!!! They are the most beautiful heels, I love them. They are a sort of suede like material, all black, pretty tall, with sort of looped ribbon of the same material down the front. I wore them to a birthday party in a private room by one of the nicest bars in the city. It was fantastic, I felt so... posh in my beautiful shoes and little black dress! At [View Full Entry]

Sweet Thoughts Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo
I feel I should warn anyone reading this that the first little part of this particular blog has nothing to do with Italy. It's just an odd thought that came into my head: you know how when you take off dirty socks in the middle of the day, its really gross if you have to put them back on again because they're "dirty". The odd thing about this is that it never would have crossed you mind that it was gross to wear them if you had never taken them off. When I first thought of it, it seemed like such [View Full Entry]

Svizzera!!! Europe » Switzerland » South-East » St Moritz
I'm very sorry it has taken me so long to write about last weekends trip to Switzerland. I had a really good start all typed out and when I went to save it I lost all of it. This was very discouraging and is my lame excuse for the delay. With that said, here is the much procrastinated entry: Sunday morning I awoke to bright Swiss light pouring in horizontally from an antique window. I slipped out of the warm burrow beneath my two huge comforters and skipped over to gaze out at a truly breath-taking landscape of snow-capped mountains [View Full Entry]

Food and awe Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo
This weekend I went OLIVE PICKING!! It was so fun! It was a small orchard owned by Giulia's family, only about 40 trees. One way you do it is to put a net down under the tree and then just shake the branches or strip off the olives etc. Otherwise you pick into a basket you sling over a shoulder. The orchard is on a hill, so it is arranged in a sort of giant staircase manner so you can stand on one level and pick olives from the tree on the next level down. It was so fun and [View Full Entry]

Storms and Sheep Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo
Last Friday there was another storm while I was at school. It was warm enough that the large windows in the classroom were all open, but it was pouring and there was thunder and lightning. The lightning was relatively unremarkable, just flashes of blue light because of our vantage point, but the variety and intensity of the thunder was fantastic! I made notes of me three favorites: 1) It was a really sudden and intense boom, really loud and with no little rolling noise to warn you, made everyone in the class jump out of their skins. 2) It sounded [View Full Entry]

Language and Life Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo
It seems the longer I wait between blog entries the more daunting it becomes, and the more like a chore; but thats odd because really, once I sit down and start writing one its really rather fun. I'm really happy to hear from all of your comments that you are enjoying this blog as much as I am and I hope it continues to entertain. Love to you all! So, where to start this time... English class! "Why talk about English class, your in Italy?!", you might ask. Because, its fascinating the things a native speaker takes for granted. For example, [View Full Entry]

So! I just finished a dinner (and desert) created by Christina's host mother. I say created because it was a masterpiece. First was long-ways slices of eggplant, must have been baked, with parmesan cheese and tomatoes between. It sounds simple but man was it incredible. Then second was a sort of torte/keish. It ad a hand mad crust and cover that my host mom explained was called "Pasta Brisa", a french name. It differs from the crust of a sweet torte (called "Pasta Frolla") because it has no eggs or anything but butter, flour, and a little milk. It was [View Full Entry]

A full glass. Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo
Well, this is going to be very difficult for two reasons. Firstly, I have a ton of things to write about. Even though it was just one week. I'll put it this way, if this last week were a glass, it would be filled to the point of overflowing with a thick, rich, liquid, probably purple in color, delicious, but with a slight sourness in certain sips. The second reason is that I already started writing about it when firefox decided to suddenly stop working and I lost all my progress, very frustrating. So, here I am again, about to [View Full Entry]

Trekking in Italy! Europe » Italy » Lombardy » Bergamo
It is now Sunday evening here and my one free day per week is winding (unfortunately) to an end. When my head hit the pillow last night, it was filled with the blissful knowledge that I would be able to sleep in late. When I was awoken this morning at eight by Christina, I admit that I more than a little reluctant to get up. I got up anyways and slowly the realization that I was going for a hike in the foothills of the Italian Alps drifted out of my sleep fogged mind to jolt electrically through my body.
