The Vatican, Umbrella feuds, Trains, crazy drivers, dug up cities, more trains, cabins, drunken girls and sleepless nights... that basically summs up the past few days.... They have certainly been interesting... So, last we left off was in Rome, ah beautiful Roma. The day following the tour of the Ancient City started off with a trip to the Vatican. We got there quite early in the hopes of avoiding a crowd... well, were we ever off... we hadnt realised that it was the last sunday of the month, and on the last sunday of the month the Vatican museum is free... so, towering in front of uss was the longest line up in my career of standing in lines.... we decided that we would ignore the line for the present time, and instead explore the beauty ... read more
Dammit, I just wrote a whole bunch and accidentally pressed a wrong button and it all disappeared, so I will instead recap: Was raining like crazy in Rome, got up early to miss crowds, forgot it was Sunday at the Vatican, so crowds still present. Saw the square, lots of statues, very cool. Went into Saint Peter's, most amazingly amazing place ever. Bought umbrella, got soaked anyhow from ensuing argument with Sarah. Went to Vatican Museum. Saw sarcophogi and other such things. Sistine Chapel gorgeous, very calming, except for obnoxious security guard standing underneath the big bold SILENCE PLEASE sign screaming "NO CAMERAS!!!!!!!! *clap clap clap* HEY!!! NO CAMERAS!!!!". Rained too much, dress got wet and almost fell down, went back to cabin. That's about how far I got. If you need more detail, go see ... read more
No time to do a full entry because we are at what they call an "internet point" and there is only one computer. So far we have made it safe and sound to Napoli and have spent the afternoon browsing some of the little shops around town. Tomorrow we will spend the day at Pompeii. So instead of an entry, here are some more pictures! Ciao, Jackie and Sarah... read more
Well, last time I wrote on here we were on our way out of Antibes to Italy - this was basically a wasted day as we spent the whole time in a stupid train station and our train didnt show up on time so we were forced to skip Pisa and stay in Genoa for the night... which was scary because we didnt have reservations and for the first time on this trip, I had no idea what anyone was saying... at ALL... Plus we were there pretty late and basically it was quite nerve-racking. However, I got some friendly Italian guy to show mehowtouse the phones (which are all differentso I guess there is some trick that you needto know to use them... like a secret code or something...??).Anyhow, we stayed in the local youth ... read more
Ahh...the sights and sounds of a 2000 year old city.... could you really ask for more? personnally, i think not. So, if you didnt gather, we made it to Rome alright after two hellish days on trains and in dumb train stations. Things are just lovely now though as everything seems to be now working out in our favour. I just wish i understood what everyone was saying.... not a sniff really....But now... as for the way things are going, it couldnt be better.... If you had asked me two days ago however I would have given you a completely different answer which probably would have included many explicit words, phrases and gestures. Seriously. The whole Pisa fiasco was just stupid. We took the train after waiting in the station for 6 hours, as I have ... read more
So this is officially the most boring and irritating day of my life. However it is slightly improved by the fact that I am in Europe, under any other circumstance, I would not be happy at all right now. Jackie and I were supposed to go to Pisa today, so we left our hotel room, after getting little to no sleep and then went off to the train station in a cab that cost an unexcpected massive amount of money (details of the exact sum will not be mentioned). We recovered from that and took a train to nice. While we were waiting a combination of the heat, the horrid horrid sunburn, lack of sleep and the massive amount of cheese consumed teh day before made me nautious (the mucus is here.....SPASM SPASM!!!! - ten points ... read more
It is bloody HOT outside!!! But on the plus side, all the keys on this keyboard are in the right places. But now I'm so used to the other way that I dont quite know what to do... Oh well. So last we left off was our last night in Lyon. We went out for a fabulous meal in the newer part of town, where a very adorable old couple (Dick and Joie from Iowa) sat next to us. We helped them pick their meals because they didn't know what anything meant. Anyhow, they were quite funny, they were one of those couples where they know each other so well that they know who tells the stories best, so all the time Joie would be like "Ooooh! Dick! Tell them about how you did your laundry ... read more
We are now in Lyon, which is a fabulous city with the exception of the fact that it is so hot here I feel that I may die of heat stroke any moment. It is I think about +35 degrees here but also it is a lot more humid so that when you step into a particularily hot spot it feels like your lungs may collapse, whew. Our trip from Paris went well, we had a delicious lunch (I had some meat that I hope was beef...) and of course some more dessert and then said a nice farewell to our wonderfully nice landlord-guy and went to the train station. Turns out we havce to buy reservations (6€) for TGVs so we ended up having to wait awhile. Right now I'm reading Rob Roy by Sir Walter ... read more
Ahhh... Lyon, so peaceful and relaxing, and so insanely hot it istne even funny. Seriouisly, I am dying here. Though it is a nice switch from the cold rain in Scotland and England, I am not used to it being so hot. Sweltering.... "Im melting, melting! oh what a world!!!!" Yeah, so thats the weather here. Very hot - if you didnt get that before...- We left PAris yesterday, sigh.... but we had an awesome timle there and I got rto see the eiffel tower which was something I had been wanting to do for years and years, so I am satisfied. We took a train to Lyon, it was a tgv, Trains de grandes vitesses or in english "a very fast train" It livved up to its name as it was indeed very fast. I ... read more
Yeah, we are still in Paris, but this internet s so cheap, and we keep finishing up the day so much earlier than in London, that this just seems like the best thing to do. Today was a fun day. We had planned last night to be waking up at around 8:00, and so we set the alarm as such. It went off as planned, however, I insisted that, as I was very tired, we sleep for five more minutes. They passed far to quickly, so I aksed for another ten.... needless to say, we woke up at 9:45.... yeah, go us. Its okay though, we needed to sleep in a bit. So it was good. After we woke up, we made our way to the train station and off we went to Versailles. This was ... read more
