So this is my first ever Blog entry. My goal for the day was to create a Blog spot for my travels to Asia. HERE IT IS!! I thought I would start by announcing my basic intinerary. North America August 6th 2007

8/5/07 I don't quite remember how a calendar works, but I believe I will have been away from home around 45 days by the time I place my key in my door and chase down Miso for a pet and a hug. I am ready. I have spent today reading over my first journal. I am amazed at how far my spirit and emotion has traveled, and where both have landed. I wrote in my first journal, that I wanted to, "...reconnect with me-the raw, brave, adventurous me whose sense and senses just need to get far enough away so as to find their way home." I have done that on so many levels. 45 days ago, home felt lost and distant--disconnected. I see now that it was I who was all those things. Home was with ... read more

Europe » Netherlands August 6th 2007

8/3/07-8/6/07 Amsterdam has a variety of flavors, depending on the tastes of the traveler. Most of Amsterdam is peaceful, compact, and comfortable. The buildings are a lot like San Francisco--tall and close together, but located on dutch canals. It is possible to travel from one end of the city to the other in less than one-hour. We had visions of our hotel in the midst of all this charm, perhaps close to an outdoor cafe overlooking a canal or plaza...Instead, we found our lodging smack dab in the middle of the red light district, unable to escape the sex shops, prostitutes, pickpockets or space cake cafes. It is a place I generally feel unsafe and would prefer to sightsee in minimal moderation. Nonetheless, we adjusted, added extra luggage locks to our bags and ventured into the ... read more

8/03/07 The Anne Frank house is in Amsterdam. It is the part of my journey I have been waiting for and dreading the most. Today was the second time I have climbed the stairs to the secret annex, but the experience this time around was quite different. Anne Frank was one of the first biographies I read; the first time a book brought tears to my eyes; the singlemost book that immediately connects me with the person who introduced it to me over twenty years ago---my mom. This email is much different than its predecessors. It is the first I am writing intentionally outside of my own audience. It is the first I am typing fresh without copying from my written records, and it is the first where I want to tell more about my connection ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community August 2nd 2007

7/26 to 8/02/07 Barcelona (7/26 to 7/28/07) A mediocre day in Spain is better than a great day at work. That being said, Spain doesn't create fireworks in my heart. Maybe my vision is cloudy after the perfection of Cinque Terra, or perhaps it is because I was just here a year-and-a-half ago or am anxious to see Billy in two days. Nonetheless, Barcelona seems mediocre to me. It is overly crowded, like a summer Saturday at Disneyland. The food is bland when it should be, at least in my mind, filled with flavor and spice. The main sight is a church, La Familia Sagrada, that has been under construction since 1883...FINISH IT ALREADY! Cranes are not my idea of a good photograph! Las Ramblas, the lively street full of shopping and living statues is too ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany July 25th 2007

7/22/07 to 7/25/07 A train strike made for a miserable day of travel, but perhaps made the reward all that much sweeter. I am now in Cinque Terra and am ready to quit life as I know it and move here. I have found paradise. It's as if the best parts of Catalina, South Beach, Capri and Laguna Beach were melted together and placed on the western coast of Italy. I am so in love with the area that I sacrificed my trip to Venice (one of my favorite cities), to extend my stay in Cinque Terra. I neither know (nor do I care) about the history, but am enamored by the charm of the five towns that make up this mediterranean paradise. Each town is linked by a narrow mountain path--sometimes only two-feet wide, and ... read more

7/18/07 to 7/21/07 "The buzz of the city is gone and this is so peaceful."--Dan Parks on the scenic train ride from Rome to Florence. We almost have four days in Florence, which is quite a long time to see two museums and a big checkered church. So upon arrival, I investigated tour options to maximize our experience. On my previous visit to Florence, I recall seeing the paintings and sculptures, but have more vivid memories of meeting up with college friends and having wine, cheese and bread picnics in the piazzas. Therefore, exploration of Tuscany, the region encompassing and surrounding Florence, is a brand new experience for me. As for new experiences...I started my time in Florence at the laundromat. I had laundry done in Burma and Bangkok, but the heat of Rome called for ... read more

7/14/07 to 7/18/07 (I think) You know you have officially vacated when the constrains and cognition of time and date completely evaporate. This is the point I have reached in Rome, Italy. I have been to Rome before, so I do not feel the compulsion to check off the must-see list, but rather am just enjoying the flow of the city. Rome in itself is timeless--like being dropped into a giant museum. I marvel at how I can be walking down the street, pass Prada, Pucci, United Colors of Benetton and a dozen gelato stores, and then run smack dab into a building that was built before Christ. So most of my time in Rome has been spent doing just that. Of course, I make many stops along the way, as the food and Gelato is ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Dubai July 13th 2007

7/13/07 When we first deplaned at 4:30 in the morning at Dubai international airport, Dan and I groaned at the lengthy transportation, immigration, and baggage process, wondering if this one-day stopover was a bad idea. Twenty-four hours later, we were laughing at how quickly we jumped to such an incorrect judgment. Dubai is in the United Arab Emurates and sits on the Arabian Sea. It is a wealthy nation containing only 1.3 million people, most of whom are Indian (dot, not feather), Filipino and Pakistani. Less than 20% are Arab. From what I read, it has transformed itself into an oasis of technology and western-style capitalism in less than a decade. Construction of high rise offices and living spaces, as well as architectual innovations are everywhere. I was told that 70% of the world's cranes are ... read more

Asia » Thailand July 12th 2007

7/11/07 Today was spent in luxury at the Peninsula, one of the world's leading hotels. It is now nearly 10pm as I lie in the hotel robe after a nice long bath, staring at the Bangkok skyline as seen from my bed on the 32nd floor. The lamp lights in the room are dimmed and I am listening to relaxation music and the sound of Billy's breathing as he lie fast asleep at my side. I am reading over my travel journals from my time in Bagon when I feel that lump in my chest pushing its way up to my throat. It doesn't take long for the tears to follow. I try to push back the shaking and sobs so as not to wake up Billy, thus revealing the sadness that surfaces without invitation or ... read more
