We arrived in Buenos Aires having heard great things from other travellers. As soon as we got to the city the atmosphere was fantastic and we loved it straight away. The sky was a brilliant blue despite it being the middle of winter and the people were friendly. We went to the centre of town walking down pretty tree lined streets full of lovely shops and cafes. It wasn´t long before Buenos Aires famous cafe culture tempted us and throughout our stay we definitely had our fair share of cake, coffee and dulce de leche. We spent the afternoon browsing the lovely shops, looking forward to some serious retail therapy later in our stay. That evening we headed to the picturesque waterfront to find some authentic Argentinian steak and wine. We definitely found the right ... read more

Sucre, the official capital of Bolivia! A beautiful city, which we immediately noticed seems to be famous for its chocolate. It goes without saying that we did our fair share of sampling. From Sucre we eventually managed to get to Santa Cruz (after one failed attempt). The best thing about Santa Cruz was definitely its amazing icecreams and its strange 3-toed sloths who live in the main square. Due to its gorgeous weather and the fact that it was the Bolivian school holidays, the city was full of Bolivian tourists. Wandering through the big market place we bought a Rubik´s cube. We spent one afternoon sat in the sunny plaza whilst Helen taught Kate how to solve the cube. Geek! After Santa Cruz we took the ´train of death´ (which turned out not to be ... read more

After and interesting and somewhat tedious 15 hour journey with a bus driver that was either stoned or drunk who liked diverting off the roads to make up his own route, we arrived in Uyuni. With half an hour to spare we met up with our salt lake expedition group. Luckily one of the girls in the group was canadian but lived in Peru and so spoke fluent spanish and was able to translate everything for us useless gals. Strangley enough, the first place we were taken to was a train graveyard in the middle of the dessert. Poor trains, all rusty n abandoned, lol. Next was the bit we had all been waiting for....the salt lakes. Amazing!! The scenery was out of this world, strangest place ever! Looked like miles and miles of snow. ... read more

On to the next stage of our amazing journey and we arrived in Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca, taking our first rickshaw. At last we got to say Adios to Kate´s fingernail, someone in the rickshaw is in for a nasty surprise! oops! The next day we started a 2 day tour of the islands in the Peruvian half of the lake. First, the oh so amazing floating islands built of reeds. They were absolutely bizarre and it felt like you could fall straight through them. Not sure how anyone came up with the idea of escaping the incas by moving onto the lake! On our way to the next proper island, our boat crashed into the reed beds and we had to be rescued by a very amused boat man. So funny! ... read more

After an early morning and early flight, we arrived at Cusco. Flew very close to some beautiful mountains. As soon as we got off the plane we all felt the immediate effects of the altitude, feeling a little woozy. Local guy Boris transfers us to our hotel in Cusco, where we get a briefing from him and our Inca trail guide Ozzi. All very exciting and we get our first try of coca tea, which supposedly helps with a lot of problems including altitude sickness, digestion, energy etc. Though we were all warned not to try taking it out of the country of to airports - wonder why??! Ozzi our guide has the best accent, kinda of a strange mixture of strong cockney, spanish, with a bit of scottish thrown in there. We luckily arrived ... read more

After a series of almost catastrophic events including lost train tickets, wrong train time and inaccessible airport terminal we did finally arrive in Lima. We managed to meet up and get into our taxi, well we think it was ours as the name was Helena Moran! Our new travel nick name! Our hostel in Lima is swish, they even make the beds! We were woken by some crazy drumming teenagers advertising Cristal beer, the national beer or Peru. Good welcome to Lima! We spent the first day wandering around Miraflores, a suburb next to the Pacific. By far the best bit was the HUGE craft market selling classic peruvian jumpers, hats, socks, bags, jewellry, gloves, rugs, blankets, purses and much much more! So we mainly shopped! Probably not the best plan as we have to ... read more
