So the weather is beautiful, in the high 60’s heading for the low 70’s (Fahrenheit). I just got the new floorboards installed () and I am itching to get out on the road and try them out. The night before I had plotted some of the points I thought would count toward the Presidential Race challenge that my HOG group is having. The Presidential Race is open to all our members. Every year my HOG group offers some kind of a challenge for fun or t-shirts. In 2006 the challenge was the I’ve Been Everywhere Tour. Using the 91 locations in Johnny Cash’s song, you take a picture of your bike at the sign. That was the year I was traveling all over the US and Canada for the ABC’s of Touring Challenge, so I got ... read more

I learned through the American Legion Riders group about the project of Extreme Makeover Home Edition they were going to be building a house for a wounded Marine in my area. Daniel Gilyeat a single parent with 4 children had lost a leg in Iraq and was in need of a better house. 8 NOV 2007 A DAY OF WORK Volunteers signed up actually a few blocks away and shuttle buses took you to within a block of the work site. When I showed up I was told that they were not accepting anymore volunteers except for Marines. They would not turn away any Marines, but they had a lot of volunteers at the site. I had worn a USMC t-shirt and was not turned away. I did serve in the Marines for 3 years. I ... read more

Our American Legion Riders from Post 370 in Overland Park got together to go see the Patriot Chopper. The Patriot Bike is a National Guard theme chopper built by OCC (Orange County Choppers). It was built on the show American Chopper. We met at 11:30am on Saturday morning. I had to hurry, as I needed to put in a couple hours that morning at work, I work for that American Legion Post. But I got to the post in plenty of time to join the group for the ride. It was in the low 40’s when we left for Cabela’s a local sporting goods superstore. Cabela’s was hosting the bike viewing. It took a little while to get there as we were separated by stoplights on the way. BTW guys, the stoplight at Johnson Drive and ... read more

1 Sept 2007 Adams Tennessee After spending a week and half on tour of TN and NC our group of 5 bikes and 5 riders were headed home, this is the second day of our three day trip home. We are all on Harleys and there is everything from my Sportster to Jerry’s Road King in the group. Our day started at Murphy NC, real early in the morning. One bike had some troubles so we needed to be at Smokey Mtn HD in Marysville NC when the service dept opened that morning. So we were riding over the mountains at sunrise. I would like to say that we saw this great sunrise from the mountain top, but the reality was that I could barely even see the road. I was leading and found the only ... read more

I had been wanting to make a run up to NE and IA this year. For the last couple years I have made a triangle, leaving KC heading up I-35 to IA cutting across IA on some of their highways to I-29 (NE) and coming back home. On the way I usually run by John Wayne’s birthplace in Winterset IA, this is located in the middle of all the bridges that were made famous by the movie ‘Covered Bridges of Madison County’. There is also an ‘I’ county (Iron I think), I counties are not found too easily so usually I use this one for my ABC’s. Anyway this year I am a little late with my run and because I am becoming less eager to ride in the cold I shortened that route so I ... read more

Okay, so I was asked to carry the American Legion Auxiliary banner in the post color guard for the Overland Park, KS parade. I rode my bike to the Legion post building (AL post 370, Overland Park) and I wore my American Legion Riders vest in the parade, so its still going to count as a bike event and be included my blog here. The day started around 10AM as I had volunteered to help decorate the Aux float that morning. When I got to the post Norma the AUX president wasn’t there yet so I sat and had a great conversation with Rabbit a fellow ALR member. Rabbit is such a teddy bear, calm, confident and you just feel secure being around him. So I asked him if he had any inclination to help with ... read more

With less than 24 hours notice the Patriot Guard was asked to provide escort to a young Marine that was coming home from Iraq. Well, that is what we like to do best - Welcome Home servicemen. We are to meet at Doc’s coffee shop, they don’t even bother telling us that it is more commonly know as the McDonalds at 87th and I-435 in Lenexa, KS. Anyway we are to meet there at 2PM and then at 2:15 we will head out to the airport. The plane is coming in at 3:30PM. The group gets together, at the McDonalds. There is plenty of time to chat and say hellos. I had been gone for a week so it was good to see the guys again. One of the guys and I wish I had ... read more

I participated in the Ridin’ the Rockies HOG Touring Rally that was held June 25-28, 2007. The plan for the week was to spend some time with my cousins before the rally started then take the long way home after the rally. I rode my 2005 833 Sportster from KC to the rally and back home. The following is a ride report of the ride. It is divided in to parts because of the pictures. My last day, I am on the way home. I am ready to be home but I have one more night out. I am heading to Garnett, the home of my parents. I promised I would stop there on the way home. On this bright morning the owner of the motel came round as I was packing the bike. I told ... read more

It was titled Kanza Art. Kanza is the Indian Nation that Kansas is named after. The Whirly Gigs along Hwy 54, in southcentral Kansas, has caught my eye every trip through here. This trip was going to be the time when I pulled it over and go check them out up close. From the Hwy they are a sight, most are flapping or rotating and the bright colors combined with the ingenuity brings a smile to your face. The gigs are lining a railroad track so they sit off the Hwy quite a few feet. As I zipped by the gigs I saw them and made a u-turn in the highway. You have to love traveling on a sporty, turns on a dime and the start of a line will allow very few other bikes in ... read more
