I just decided the week before that I was going to take the opportunity that Easter brought and use 4 days to get to Vicksburg Military Park then ride the Natchez Trace. It was funny that the trip originally started as just heading to Eureka Springs, AR for a couple days, but the weather wasn’t forecasted to be that great there. And I wanted some warm weather. Farther south it was looking better, when I saw Vicksburg on the map I knew that is where I needed to head. Then Vicksburg is just a short distance from the southern end of the Natchez Trace… The plan was to get to Vicksburg on Thursday. Friday morning I would spend a couple hours at the Vicksburg National Military Park. Then head south to the Natchez MS and start ... read more

21 MARCH 2009, Kansas City, MO -- It was one early day. The riders wanted in at 7:30AM or something like that. They were going to serve breakfast burritos to the riders that came that day. A free will offering for the food. I was there at 6AM because TAG (Thomas Gillespie) was going to start his bun burner back to CA. A Bun Burner is a certified Iron Butt Association ride of 1500 miles in 36 hours. He wanted to leave at 6AM and I volunteered to be one of the witnesses. TAG on the Wednesday before that Saturday morning was in Iraq. He is a US Marine and member of our post, that is how I met him. He reminds me of my son. Always smiling, always eager. All he wanted when he got ... read more

On January 10, 2009 Darrel called and said that we were going to the bike show. Wide Open Bike show to be more specific. Show opens at 10am I have to work first but then away we go. Darrel brings his son Nicholas. I was surprised that I kept running into people I knew. A lot from the American Legion Rider (ALR) group, some from Patriot Guard and then some from HOG. One guy walked up to me because we had chatted at the Central dealership once when I was there. I was getting hugs everywhere. People that know me know I am a hugger. “Marines hug”, that’s what one old jar head told my son the day he was presented his Eagle Scout badge. A truer statement has not ever been said. Anyway there were ... read more

On December 20, 2008 Central Harley Davidson had a fundrasier for a local family who had a child die from a Wilm’s Tumor. The medical bills were high and this was a way to help. So the plan was to get teams of 3 people (young or old) to ride through a set course. Only one team on the course at a time and each team is timed. The dealership had cleared their upstairs warehouse and there was plenty of room for the relays and all the spectators. The cookies and punch provided by the dealership added a sugar fix on the already heightened activities. The relay was made of 3 segments, the beginning was primarily a zig zag section, followed by a large curve in the second section then the final straight away section. At ... read more

The whole Harley Mom travel blog has been about trips with my 2005 Harley Sportster Effie. With only a few exceptions, well, this one really blog isn’t about traveling either, but about the motor service done on her at 107,000 miles. Effie’s extended warranty is running out at the end of FEB 09. She was seeping oil from about every gasket that was used on the motor. So as the weather turned cold, but before she was snowed into the shed she stays in, I thought I should get her into the guys so they can do their miracle work. She has over 107,000 miles on her at this time. On Monday I had sometime and thought to go check up on her. She had been in the shop for a couple weeks and I had ... read more

Today a friend Melany and I headed out from KC and did a 700 mile loop through KS, OK, AR and MO to get ABC’s of Touring points and some Presidential Race points. She was on her Harley and I was on my 2005 Harley Sporster. We had a blast. But one of the things we pulled over to enjoy was the “Little House on the Prairie House”. Riding on HWY 75 we saw the sign and I asked Mel if she was up for a ‘drive by’ to see it. With a smile on her face she says “sure”. It was 2.5 miles off the hwy were we on. When we pull up I pulled out the camera to get a picture from the road, but Mel makes it clear that we will be going ... read more

In late 2007 I wanted to make it back to Greensburg KS to see the rebuilding. If you recall Greensburg was totally wiped out by a tornado the first week in May of 2007. In late June I had rolled through Greensburg on the way home from a trip to CO and stopped to take pictures. Here is the original blog . Well I didn’t make it back in 2007 and all of the summer of 2008 I wanted to go, but that trip always seemed to get sidelined for other trips. I had been watching the ‘Greensburg’ TV series on the Green Channel about how they were rebuilding green and hope to be the first Leeds certified platinum town. The last show had just aired and it was going to be getting colder, so I ... read more

Most of these blogs are about trips I have taken with my Harley Davidson Sportster. A 2005 883cc Low model I have travelled the US with it. It makes travel much cheaper as it gets 50MPG, but anyway this is a day trip I took from KC on a Wednesday. I had been wanting to get back to Greensburg but just hadn't made it so I decided to do it the first decent day that I could get off. So in 2007 I ran through Greensburg KS and Mullinville KS on the way home from Colorado. I stopped and took pictures of these whirly gigs that were located along the highway (hwy 54). They were labeled as KANZA ART and I wrote a blog just about them . Well this year I headed out to go ... read more
