A lot of people have contacted me and asked about the saddlebags I have mounted on my Sporty Effie. They were shown in the HOG Tails article. I decided the thing to do was to just write a blog about them and show some good detail. I am sure that there are better ways to mount these, but here is how I did it. I am a very functional type of person, it doesn’t need to be pretty, but it needs to be functional. So I wanted hard bags that were waterproof, could store the kitchen sink and were cheap. No $995 hard bags for me. I have a friend that is a professional model maker and motorcycle enthusiast, Roger. Roger told me to find the bags I wanted and we would figure out a way ... read more

I was going through some old computer data CDs and I found this.. Originally written for the Central Midwest HOG (Harley Owners Group) Newsletter called HOG TALES, I thought I would just post it here. I wrote this before I knew I had actually come in first for the ABC's challenge. ------- Crista, I wrote some thing up for the newsletter. Well I have had a great year of travels and I thought I would just write up a summary of my experiences. Odometer wise, Effie, my 2005 Sportster 883 Low, tells me we went just over 42,000 miles in 2006. When I was trying to put it in a frame of reference that one of my younger friends could understand I found that it is almost 3,000 miles from New York, NY to San Francisco ... read more

++ In DEC 09 I found a bunch of my old Xmas letters so I thought I would post them here in my blog. ++ Merry Christmas to ya’ll. Its been a pretty busy year. We are busy as beavers at work, lots of new products coming in and lots to do. Its been a good year for us and promises to be pretty good year next year. I spent most of JAN and most of MAR in the Philippines. I really like the people there, they are so eager to please, at least the ones that don’t want to kill you. J My year has been consumed with the ABC’s of Touring challenge from Harley Davidson. I started planning trips for it in DEC of 05 and took the last trip the 2nd weekend of ... read more

16 December 2006 was forecasted to be a warm Saturday. Correction, make that an unseasonably warm December Saturday. Any December day that is above 60 degrees F yells for a motorcycle ride. I heard the call and started making arrangements on Thursday for the up coming Saturday. This wasn’t going to be an ordinary ride, this week I had been entertaining Santy, an associate from our sister company in the Philippines. This was his first trip to the US and I was trying to show him as much of it as possible in the 2 weeks he was going to be here. When I am in the Philippines, Santy and the rest of the staff there go out of their way to make sure I am comfortable. I try to make their trips special when they ... read more

When a fellow veteran in my HOG group said he wanted to do something for Veterans Day I was excited. Gary Palmer asked all the Vets to meet in the back of the room after the regular meeting was over. That was the start of something great. It soon worked into an event that would start at our local dealer then proceed to Ft. Leavenworth, KS. Yes the one known for the military prison. While in Ft. Leavenworth we would join the local VFW group riders for the big Veterans Day Parade downtown, tour the National Cemetery and eat at a Mexican restaurant before coming home. Veterans Day morning was COLD. When the Saturday morning news said it was 32 degrees outside, I found it hard to get out of bed and think about riding in ... read more

This weekend was one of the last ones for my ABC’s. Thats the ABC's of Touring a challenge that Harley has for its HOG (Harley Owners Group) members. You accumulate points by finding a town and county for each letter of the alphabet, you get points for each country, state, HOG Rally or other defined locations. Harley Davidson sends you free stuff depending on how many points you accumulated in the year. Members taking up the challenge send pictures that verify that your bike reached the locations. I really enjoyed participating in the challenge in 2005 and decided to pour all my efforts into the ABC's for 2006. The goal for the 3 day weekend was to leave Kansas City, hit 3 HOG Rallies (MO, KY, GA) pick up my last continental state FL and get ... read more

This is the last part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Nova Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Sorry about the map or should I say lack of a map. The map here at travelblog isn't working right, it randomly moves the route all over the world. I took it off rather than have it just be garbage info. --Cindy 1MAR08 Sunday 20AUG06 Last day starts at 7:30am, with 511 miles to go as I pullout of the Knights Inn located near Jackson TN. It was all interstate home except 40 odd miles of 412 that lead to I-155. The riding was great except for an hour or so of I-55 when we were traveling ... read more

This is the 16th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Nova Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Sat 19AUG06 Yesterday I passed a caravan of 10 new school buses traveling in the slow lane. They were not letting any one in the line and thus were playing havoc at entrance ramps. They were not loaded with kids and looked like new buses being delivered Laidway or something like that was painted on the buses. Well today I passed school buses again. These were older and were in pairs. One would be towing second one. One of these buses was pulling a flat bed trailer, that had a panel van and a trailer on the ... read more

This is the 15th part of a series about my trip on my 2005 883 Low Harley Sportster ‘Effie’ from Kansas City to Nova Scotia and back. This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Friday 18AUG06 Up, packed and gone by 8AM. Traveling mostly interstates today, basically all but 30 miles, I made it to the PA State HOG Rally about 3PM. Because of the change in my work schedule I couldn’t stay at the PA rally at all. Managed to stay for a few minutes, it took a little while to find someone to take my picture. I drove by the vendor area and did a quick peek at what they had. One vendor was offering a kickstand that was mounted on the right side of a Harley. At the ... read more

This was part of my vacation from 4 to 20 AUG 2006 Thursday 17 AUG I wake this morning to Dan back out back again working on his wood project. Up and gone by 7AM, I am still a half day behind the plan, so I need to keep pushing. I really wanted to spend time at the PA rally, don’t want it to be mostly over by the time I get there.
