South America » Peru » Ica » Huacachina August 20th 2012

08/18/12 We took a fairly comfortable bus ride to ICA. We had the comforts of AC, Wi Fi, movies, all while taking in the sites of the desert and their accompanying slums. Immediately, we took a cab over to a Huacachina, which is an oasis amidst the sand dunes. We were pretty tired so we just walked around the oasis, found a place that had good garbanzo bean burgers, drank some beers in the evening at the top of the dunes, and then made party with some solid people we met from the UK. The following day we hiked up to the top of one the biggest dunes surrounding the area which, from below, looked like an easy feat, but the fact that it was sand definitely made it a bit more strenuous. Afterwards, the pool ... read more

08/13/12 So, a long day of travel. LAX was jam packed and it took us about 3 hours to arrive at the gate. Since both of us are afflicted with Veganitis, it was almost impossible getting something to eat at LAX. I would think there would at least be some kind of option, but we had to settle with bagels and fruit, which really isn't that bad, but will only get you so far for sustenance. Anywho, we make it to Mexico City, and leave it to this airport to be the FIRST airport, out of dozens of flights I've taken, to make me CHECK my backpack (my ONLY luggage). Needless to say, I was very irritated. I had to quickly think of the things I needed for the long flight and that I absolutely couldn't ... read more

Last year was my first trip to this awe-inspiring beast of a mountain and this year it was even more of an enjoyable experience. The thin, post-holiday crowd was a lot easier to manage; the weather was perfect, sunny, and clear; and there was a crap ton of the white shit! I do my best to ignore all the rich kids here with their brand new gear, omnipotent smirks, and lack of skiing/snowboarding abilities, but shit, if you can't make it down the double black diamond that you thought you could, don't sit in the middle of the run looking for yellow snow to eat, get up and move to the side. In typical fashion, The Rocky Mountain Barking Spiders returned! Whether I'm on a plane, on top of a mountain, or in any sort of ... read more

Having only done, at the most, probably only 30 miles on a dirt bike in one trip, I wasn't quite sure what to expect with an itinerary that planned for over 425 miles in 4 days. The starting point was in Hatch, UT where we awoke to humongous storm clouds headed our way. Having not eaten, or taking care of our number two duties, we rush to put all our equipment on. Luckily, once it was evident that we couldn't beat the rain, our trusty trail leaders decided to just get breakfast first and wait it out for a minute. Despite this, once we started on our journey it was pouring down rain anyways. So, it starts off pretty good...it's not entirely evident quite yet that I am the least experienced of the group, and I'm ... read more

My first time to Yosemite and it was pretty impressive. Having just got back from Europe, and seeing so many impressive sites, I thought I would have been not so amazed, but it is by far one of the coolest places in the US. We didn't do too many strenuous hikes and we pretty stuck to the beaten path, but we were still awe-struck. It was a great time of the year to be there because it wasn't too busy and the waterfalls were running at full steam! We were also lucky enough to come across a bear hanging aht...word.... read more

After getting off the train in Venice, we could tell already that things were going to be hectic. It's never the easiest thing when our hotel isn't in walking distance. Having no idea that we were supposed to buy tickets ahead of time, we just jumped on a bus and gave the driver a piece of paper that had our hotel name and address on it. The driver obviously knew we had no clue what was going on, so he didn't stress on us not having a ticket. He also spoke to me in Italian the entire way there....I'd like to think it was a good conversation. The driver even went as far as to stop the bus a few times, wave down other buses, and ask them where our hotel was... Even though our hotel ... read more

After traveling through 4 countries in one day, we made it to Lake Bled! Instantly, we found out how nice the people are in this little town. We arrived late, but luckily the train station was adjacent to a bar where I asked a random group of people how to get where we were staying and they happily offered to drive us there! When we got to the hostel, the receptionist was equally as nice and personable. The hostel (Traveler's Haven) was pretty awesome too...free bikes, free internet, free laundry! AND, because of the volcano in Iceland disrupting travel, we had the place all to ourselves. We took advantage of the free bikes and rode them all over the place. The Lake was pretty rad, the water is like an emerald green color. We heard about ... read more

Yesterday we finally got some laundry done...it may have been the first time in a couple weeks?! We also took a cruise along the Bosphorus strait...it stopped on the asia side of Turkey. I think just so you can say that you were in Asia?! We fought through hordes of people to get back and I had an dope ass fish sandwich straight out of the water. The locals were lining up for it, so I figured it must be good. Today, we went to the Grand Bazaar and bought a bunch of crap for people. There's actually a lot of cool things we would have bought had we not been backpacking (i.e. hookah, tea set, chess set, a carpet the size of our backyard). We had a veggie wrap with fries in it for dinner ... read more

After a very annoying breakfast in Budapest, trying to fight through a shit ton of obnoxious teenagers that were staying at our hotel for food...we flew to Turkey and to our surprise received a meal on like a 2 hour flight...oh joy! We had trouble finding a hotel at first, then we finally found a hostel that Lonely Planet recommended, but it ended up being shit hole run shady characters. Getting to Istanbul was like entering another universe from where we were! Huge mosques, Muslim prayer calls, hectic streets, etc. Right away we found ourselves some Turkish delights and pistachio baklava and proceeded to "make party"! At dinner we sat next to a really nice older couple from the US, that were stranded there due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano. We laughed, we cried, ... read more

We caught an early train here yesterday. We went through Slovakia without even noticing that our rail pass doesn't cover that country so it cost us about 35 Euros...whoops, luckily we didn't get fined 100 Euros each. Not as busy as Prague, and just as cool! We searched out one of the big attractions here which is the thermal baths! When we arrived, it was really confusing because we weren't sure was to expect as far as how things were run, and the signs were very unclear. Maybe their best attempt at articulating it in English? Either way, eventually, we figured out that you needed a wrist band, then we got a changing "cabin", and then we proceeded through the labyrinth of thermal baths inside and outside.
