Started the day riding from the hotel 30 kms to the Cambodian border. One of the prettiest rides to date with a levee road running along a canal with both side lined by humble stilt houses & alive with the every day activities of village life. The houses were ramshackle, made from anything available like rusty tin, plastic, canvas, tree branches but with an obvious pride, swept clean & decorated with colourful pot plants. Ironically many also had satellite dishes. The Border crossing was quite but still slow & bureaucratic, but not so for locals who seemed to be loaded up with produce or goods & continue straight past quarantine & immigration. Once through we picked up our new bikes & a new local crew for a short ride to lunch. After lunch we did another ... read more

After a good nights sleep woke to find the homestay was over the water due to the high tide. After a short boat ride back down the river, we started a long day in the saddle starting with a 40 km ride to lunch passing intense agricultural activities utilising the fertile rich soils of the Mekong delta. Lunch was a superb small village menu being the family home of our tour bike mechanics followed by another 40 km ride in quite warm conditions. We then had a short bus and ferry ride to Long Xuyen to end our 2 day Mekong experience before travelling to our last overnight stop in Vietnam at the Chau Pho Hotel. After dinner we had a rickshaw tour of the town to end our Vietnam visit.... read more

What a fantastic start to the new tour. 4 riders with 5 support staff. Started the day with a 2 hour bus ride out of town followed by a leisurely 43 km ride along a series of winding levee footpaths that followed a tributary of the Mekong River with river village life on display & at work on vast fertile floodplains of tropical fruit ( Durian & Jac) and flowers. lunch was a simple Pho soup followed by a short bus ride to a nearby river dock for an hour long trip along a tributary up the Mekong River to an overnight island homestay within the Mekong Delta. Everything about the Mekong has a charming derelict appearance & true to form our boat was having engine problems requiring constant stops & eventually a stop for mechanical ... read more

A later start & easily the hottest day to date. The riding part of the day was a repeat 40 km morning ride and a 20 km afternoon ride. Lunch split the rides & was a delicious vegetarian hotspot at a Buddhist temple. The whole day was easy riding and mainly followed the coast although being the last ride together for this tour the afternoon ride turned into a fast sprint. The group has been one of the most harmonious I've ever been on with a lot of fun memories. After riding we transferred to our bus for the final few hours into the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and a final group dinner at Koto restaurant ( a hospitality training school for disadvantaged & at-risk youth in Vietnam). The city was previously ... read more

Woke to a crisp temp with a cloudless clear blue sky, perfect for a riding city tour of Dalat, a beautiful town unlike any other in Vietnam due to its manmade lakes & gardens, palaces and colonial-era summer homes that have largely escaped the ravages of war. The riding part of the day was a 40 km morning ride and a 20 km afternoon ride. The whole day was easy riding and both sessions had a 10 km downhill decent. The morning decent was a good surface & able to reach speeds of 50 Kph while the second was in a remote coffee growing area with a narrow twisting road with rough & broken surface in part & interrupted by local cow & goat herds but good speeds were also made. Our accommodation for the night ... read more

What an awesome day. Perfect riding weather, not too hot, rain disappeared for blue/grey sky. Left Nha Trang for the usual short bus ride out of town to avoid the chaotic congestion for 70 kms of riding. The first 32 kms was mostly a gentle rise before another 30kms of a continuous steep and winding assent up the Bidoup-Nui Ba Pass ranging between 5-10% before a rewarding speedy 3 km decent at 10%. The route rose from near sea level climbing to 1440 mtrs into a cooler highland climate ideal for growing some of the country's best fruits, flowers and coffee beans. The route passed magnificent scenery with a fast running river at the bottom of a very deep valley lined on both sides with a lush canopy of green colour with plantations at the lower ... read more

Left Quy Nhon for a short bus ride out of town for 70 kms of riding till lunch. The weather was equally as bad or worse than yesterday but off we merrily went until we had to change to an inland diversion as the planned costal route was seriously flooded. After lunch we had a final 20 km sprint on a good road with a heavy across the shoulder tail wind & some really good times made. While it was as relief to get out of the rain once riding had finished we only had limited dry clothes to change into for the 3.5 hr drive to our two night stay in Nha Trang. The trip notes described the drive as cliff hugging views overlooking a deep blue sea but the bleak scene from the bus ... read more

A long day starting at 7 am with a 6 hr bus trip to cover some 300 kms through the central part of Vietnam with a planned afternoon 60 km ride to our overnight stay at the Seagull Hotel in the coastal city of Quy Nhom. However the weather gods turned against us. While the whole country seems awash with water today was our first wet riding day with heavy showers all day. I would never consider riding in such conditions at home but off we set with our $0.50 plastic poncho's riding in potholed & flooded roads. By 22 kms with a winter night setting in early under grey sky's we came to a soon to be impassable section of flooded road & we obviously needed to turn back. Despite the rain it was still ... read more

Today was a 75 km ride with the first 50 km starting at the Hue beachfront with the cycle path initially following the coast before passing through mainly fishing villages. Mostly flat but with a few challenging sections for loose sand & running water across the path following the recent typhoon and continual rain which somehow we have incredibly managed to avoid. The next 10 kms was up the Hai Van (Ocean Cloud) Pass on National Route 1A but now less traffic due to a new bypass tunnel. Misty clouds swirled around with rain threatening but still spectacular views along the way and at the top across the Bay of Denang made the effort of the 8% assent rewarding followed by an exhilarating 10 km decent to the tropical south and our two night stay at ... read more

After a fairly good sleep we arrived in Hue to a pretty bleak outlook but surprisingly it cleared up into a bright day (27c but much higher humidity than to date). After a late breakfast we were set up with our new bikes which will take us the rest of the way to HCMC (happy to return my old one as it had seen better days). Riding was restricted to a leisurely 40kms exploring the former imperial capital of Vietnam as well as getting used to our new bikes. Stops on the way included the war ruins of the Forbidden Purple City, the Imperial Citadel, temples, tombs and pagodas. The Forbidden City was hugely damaged by the French after they tried to reclaim the country after WW2 & further damaged during the Tet offensive. Some of ... read more
