We spent the night in Seward, as this was where we were to start or cruise from.. The day before the cruise we had some free time to go to the Seward Aquarium...it does not match Cape Town's Two Ocean's Aquarium! But we did meet a cute seal, everytime we put our hand on the glass he would stop and rub his chin more or less where our hand was before he zoomed off again! That was SO sweet! We also saw a bird which I though was extinct -a Puffin! They are so funny looking! We had amazing weather up untill we got to Seward, suddenly it was misty and overcast but we could still see that Seward was a very pretty little coastal town. With our bags packed and all ready to go we ... read more

Where on earth is Seldovia? Well... it is tucked away in the Kenia peninsula opposite Homer in Alaska, with a population of about 260 and the only way to get there is by seaplane or boat! There are no roads connecting Seldovia to the rest of Alaska. It felt like an Island but we had to keep reminding ourselves that it was part of the mainland.. It is a stunning little place, there is so much beauty - it's impossible to describe or to capture. Besides the natural beauty there were also a few restaurants and 1 teeny litlle grocery store, no roadmarkings or stop signs and very friendly locals. If ever you are in Homer it's SO worth taking a boat or seaplane out to Seldovia. It was about a 2hour boat trip there, we ... read more

I can't write too much today..I am sitting next to the Library's bin as it's the only place in Skagway that offers wifi! Anyway...here is some pics of Homer.... Homer has a Spit.. now I did not know what that was until we drove on it.. like a little bit of land that stretches out into the Kachemak bay, it is also home to Homer harbor...and plenty of little touristy shops and restaurants. A large part of it reserved for RV's, where they can stop a night or few before travelling on. Homer is so so so pretty! It's surrounded by 5 glaciers and 3 or 4 volcanos! It really is breathtaking! We took a little boat out to Seldovia, a tiny little hidden town only accessable by seaplane or boat. About 250 people live there! ... read more

We had such a good time at the convention! The program was spot on and is exactly what we need right now. People in Alaska are SO friendly, but at the convention they were even more so! We were made to feel at home as soon as we stepped into the arena. We have made so many new friends and their friendly smiling faces will always come to mind when I think back of our time there. So many came over to introduce themselves and quickly word spread that there were 4 South African visitors in town, which meant that more and more came over meet us. It was so sweet of the circuit overseer to take time out of his busy schedule to come over and welcome us to Alaska:) Thank you all for your ... read more

North America » United States » Alaska » Mat-Su Valley August 26th 2012

Walking on Alaska's largest accessible glacier! Wow breathtaking! The Matanuska is a stunning valley glacier 24 miles (38.62Km) long and 4 miles (6.43Km) wide and descends 12 000ft (3.65Km) to the end. It wasn't as cold as we expected it to be- thankfully! It also turned out to be THE perfect day to go out on the glacier as the days before and after it was either cloudy, rainy or foggy and in either of these cases they close access to the glacier. We looked a little "unprepared" in our "town" clothes! Crocks and jeans! compared to all the other serious walkers with helmets and ice spike shoes! They were SO geared up in ice-wear that they couldn't even move and here we came along and casually walked around on top of the glacier! It's a magnificent ... read more

We stayed in very sweet cabins in North Pole / Fairbanks area, we were surrounded by Birch and Spruce trees and had a river infront of our cabins. The weird thing was waiting for the sun to go down and for it to get dark. It only got darkish at about 11:30 but I think proper dark as we know it only came around at about 12:30am and then it started getting light again at about 4am! We didn't have a problem with that though as it gave us more play time for our day:) We went for a drive to North Pole, we attended the Sunday meeting in the North Pole congregation, It was so encouraging to meet new friends and to hear their experiences. They live in a territory of about 6000 people, have ... read more

Wow, now that was a lot of flying! Cape Town to Dubai, Dubai to Seattle, Seattle to Anchorage. So now I can enjoy having my feet on the ground for a while. It's taking us a little longer this time to adjust to the time change - Anchorage is 10 hours behind South Africa and we are all still recovering from the flu- so things are a little fuzzy when I try and remember what exactly we did the first few days..haha, but I'll try and fill the gaps with some pictures.. The weather is very pleasant at the momemnt, eventhough we had our scarves and coats on, the locals were in strappy tops and shorts! It starts getting light at about 4:30am and dark at about 11:30pm- very long days! it's weird trying to go ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Western Cape » Greyton July 29th 2012

The Hike: Day 1 Saturday We started our hike at about 7:30 am in Greyton and followed the winding traill through the Riviersonderend Mountains to Mcgregor. It was a little chilly when we started but we soon enough warmed up as we started to ascend. It's good to keep in mind when hiking in winter months that keeping warm is not as much a challenge as staying cool, I was fine in my wicking t-shirt,a thin wicking long sleeve top and a waterproof outer shell which I shed as soon as I got hot but kept it close-by for when those gusts of winds came up or the clouds threatened. Our first stop was Breakfast Rock- where we all huddled around the rocks to take shelter from the gusty wind. A few boiled eggs and hot ... read more

Africa » South Africa » Northern Cape » Springbok September 16th 2011

We took a drive up to Springbok with Grant and Revouna, they went to visit her family and we drove another 150km to Port Nolloth to visit my Dad and Wanda at Macdougalls's Bay, I can almost say where our love for camping started 4 years earlier. This was our first stopover on our way to Richtersveld in 2007... We had a good laugh and really enjoyed visiting with them there. The accomodation is very basic and we should rather have camped but it was a short visit so we could stick it out for two nights! anyway...here are a few pics... ... read more

Once again when went for a drive to "say goodbye" to my Dad and Wanda before they get too far away.. This time my oldest brother (Faizel) and his family joined us on our little roadtrip. Rondeberg resort seems like a very nice place to chill out, (even if you don't have a boat) and it's only about 3hr drive from Cape Town. anyway, as promised here are some pics..... read more
