Amsterdam has so much to offer..depending what one is in to..We enjoyed the canals and can see why it is called "Venice of the North", it has over 100km of canals and 1500 bridges. The three main canals, Heregracht, Prinsengracht and Keizersgracht were dug in the 17th century. Today all these waterways and canals are still used for transport and leisure activities. It also creates picture perfect scenes:) Amsterdam's skew houses..one could easily conclude that the houses have gone all skew and wonky as they aged, but after doing some research..I found a common explanation for these tall buildings being so skew.. They were actually built like that! whaat?? here's why.. most of these houses have very steep spiral staircases leading to the top floor..up to 5 stories high.. so getting big bulky items up there ... read more

Europe » France » Alsace » Strasbourg December 21st 2012

We spent one night in Strasbourg, and there happened to be a very colourful and loud parade of some sort going on through the streets. We watched them as they danced their way through the streets. Soon we lost interest and found ourselves browsing through the many cuckoo clock shops...we couldn't resist and some old French lady that couldn't speak a word of English somehow convinced us that we we absolutely NEEDED a Cuckoo clock, all wrapped and packed we proudly carried our new purchase around:) After that intense French/English Cuckoo purchase we were quite hungry and started a long search for a restaurant that offered a menu that we could understand... We finaly found one that offered "some" English descriptions... I decided to have a Cheeseburger, wow, adventurous you might think,,but it was the safest ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-West » Grindelwald November 19th 2012

Wow Switzerland is expensive! and it's not just because we converted South African Rands- even the locals find it expensive! Anyway..I am not going to grumble about that, this place was far too pretty to spend a blog space moaning about it...SO... When I picture paradise...this is the place I think of.. Awesome mountains, green grassy slopes, pretty flowers, mooooing cows and cowbells ringing in the distance... As I stared into the distance I pictured Heidi and Peter running , skipping and rolling in the green grass as the goats and cows peacefully graze on the mountain slopes...my only dissapointment was not coming home with my own real cowbell:( Besides being famous for Heidi, it's also well known for skiing, hiking, snowboarding, icerinks, and climbing. This 10km wall of mountain is made up of a few ... read more

I LOVE Venice........ I could really just end this blog entry right there, but it will be a little unfair towards Venice, so I will try my best to paint a pretty word picture of this old romantic place with all it's mystique.. No..you can't drive your car to your hotel in Venice, not even to just quickly drop off your oversized suitcase and boot full of parcels, but you can however drive to Venice and leave your vehicle in a secure parking lot and then drag your bag over many bridges, steps and down many alleyways or alternatively pay a fee and let a bag carrier or bag taxi man cart your belongings to your hotel. Once you have checked in, unpacked your bags and recovered from that very Venicey experience you can enjoy the ... read more

North America » United States » New York » New York » Manhattan October 30th 2012

We have been treated to yet another visit to New York and loved it! We saw so much more by rather doing a sightseeing walk-around as opposed to taking a cab,bus or train. We stayed in Time Square and walked the 1 1/2 hours or about 7km to the World Trade Centre site. As it's open to the public now we just had to go in. Even though we don't personally know anyone who died in the 9/11 attack it was still a very emotional experience visiting the site. The Waterfalls / twin pools where the two towers once stood was designed with so much feeling, water is constantly flowing softly over the edge, seemingly falling for ever as one can not see the bottom of the falls, often a rainbow appears above the pools, giving ... read more

Dubai Dubai Dooobuy I love going to the old souq, the fountains, the creek and of course the massive malls..have not yet been adventurous enough to brave the sand dunes by 4x4 or camel:) Dubai Fountain is the world’s largest musical fountain and the city’s most popular free tourist attraction. It is set on the Burj Khalifa Lake in Downtown Dubai, between the Dubai Mall, Souk Al Bahar, and the Burj Khalifa. The fountain consists of a 275 metre long central arc of jets, joined to a smaller arc and 5 circles of jets. When the performance begins these powerful jets shoot water sprays to heights of up to 150 metres in harmony with the music and illuminated by over 6,000 powerful lights and 50 colour projectors. Performances are held daily and last up to 5 ... read more

North America » Canada » Ontario » Niagara Falls September 22nd 2012

And we are back in Canada, for a day - to view the Niagara Falls. The view is so much better from the Canadian side as one can see all three falls, collectively known as Niagara Falls. It is made up of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Canada Falls. Bridal Veil Falls is a very narrow falls between the two bigger ones. We walked right up to the brink of the Canadian Falls, the water just endlessly pours over the edge and somehow I expected it to stop at some point or dry up. These majestic falls create a huge spray cloud that can really soak a person! American Falls is about 53m high but due to loose rocks at the bottom the actual height is only 21meters, to get a better view of ... read more

North America » United States » Illinois » Chicago September 21st 2012

Another pretty city, it's not as busy as New York and also not as big as New York but it still seems like a pretty cool city to visit. I loved the "Bean", a sttainless steel sculpture made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together. It's sooooo shiny, I stare at it all day long! I figured it must be the city's bit of bling. We also went for a walk along the gorgeous waterfront, it has stunning views of the city and a massive fountain - Buckingham Fountain. it is 280ft in diameter and 25ft high, I read that it should be visited twice- once in day time and also at night. We went for a fast stroll, LoL along the 'magnificent mile' and managed to buy a thing or two.. Short and sweet... ... read more
