Burning Man 2009 Evolution! So many things to say about Burning man but no description can capture the magic. A helpful tip..go with friends. The people made it so much fun. This was my first burning man and our camp of 8 people made a tree and turned our camp into the garden of eden. We were officially called The garden of the third hole since the year before their theme was a putt putt golf corse and they had the grass left over with the hole in it. I got ready by buying crazy costumes and we stocked up on food and water to last a week and off we went in our huge rental van with our bikes attached to the back. The journey was long but equally fun. We got there and decided ... read more

The last stop on the Big Island was Zip-lining in North Kohala. The Eco Adventure Tour took a bunch of us out on a 6 wheeler into the middle of the forest to zip on 8 zip-lines. Zip lines 1-6 progressively get higher and faster, the guides do a good job of slowly working you up to the last two zips, which are the most epic. At Zip line 6 the group stopped to snack on granola bars made from the locals, macadam nuts and pineapples in a cute little hut next to a huge waterfall. We zipped through the forest, over water falls and walked across a skinny suspended bridge by the time it was all said and done. I even did a few completely upside down (shh!). Then, on the ride back we were ... read more

From the Green Sand Beach I decided to keep going to the other side of the island to the Volcano National Park. I stayed in a cute little cottage in the rain forest, it was probably one of the most amazing places I've ever stayed. Fresh fruit, milk, oj, eggs and more delivered to my door each morning, there was a hot tub hidden in a little hut with candles everywhere and the cottage itself was beautiful inside. The owners were very interested in helping get the most out of the trip, and provided me with maps to the volcano national park, tips for where to see the lava flow, as well as food suggestions for dinner. PS. If you are ever in the area Thai Thai is pricy but worth it for some of the ... read more

South Point was next on the trip. I rented a car and drove to South Point to hike to the Green Sand Beach. Unfortunately for me, I was stopped by construction on the road to the beach and was told to come back before 8am the next day so I decided to check out Punalu 'u Beach for the time being. According to the lonely planet guide sea turtles were known for coming on to shore and sun bathing in the black sand, so I saw it as a an opportunity to cuddle with a turtle.. or at least try. When I got there, I parked and roamed around the lava rock. There were little patches of water here and there, looking a little closer there were two turtles looking for food. Once I finally made ... read more

The next day I decided to rent a Moped to attempt to make it to the hard to spot Black Sand beaches of Kiholo Bay. Being that I had never driven a moped before I was a bit skeptical about being able to successfully operate it on the Highway, but I figured my training of riding 4 wheelers might help a little. I started out with baby steps, riding around in the parking lots, around Kona and then finally braved the highway (with no helmet I might add). Hawaii doesn't require them so the rental place doesn't provide them either. Before reaching Kiholo I stopped at Kekaha Kai State Park and Beach 69 finally spotting a sea turtle or two. Once back on the road the only indication that I was close to Kiholo Bay was ... read more

The next day I had a 6 am wake up and headed on foot from the hostel to Jacks Diving Locker for my first day of scuba diving. Scuba in California was freezing so I decided to give it another shot in Hawaii. Even before we left the marina I saw a guy pulling out a huge swordfish from his boat to load into the back of his truck, it was crazy. On the way to the dive sites (High Rock and Freeze Face) we saw a bunch of dolphins playing in the water too. There were various skills I had to complete on Dive 1 and 2 for my open water cert. All went well except I ended up with mild barotrauma and had to miss out on day two. But that didn't stop me ... read more

When I arrived in Kona I checked my stuff in at the Koa Wood Hale Inn Hostel in Kailua Kona and decided to go for a walk. I ended up at the Old Kona Airport which is covered in lava rock, coral and awesome little crabs moving around everywhere. There were a few places to snorkel along the way as well. After that, I decided to explore the little town of Kailua Kona, I found some pretty flowers, mugomba seeds, experienced shaved ice, kava at Kanaka Kava and good food. I quickly found my favorite eating spot Lava Java, practically ate there every day while feeding the little birds ... read more

As a part of what turned into serious adventure month a group of friends and I woke up at like 5am and left for La Jolla, CA for a fun filled day of Sea Cave Kayaking and Paragliding. When we headed out, we were skeptical weather or not we would actually be able to do both since both sports required specific weather conditions. To begin the morning, we suited up in wetsuits at the La Jolla Kayak store and proceed to venture out into the ocean. The craziest part in my opinion was making it past the initial waves. It felt like a ride at Disney or something, riding up and abruptly dropping down from the tip of a wave. Luckily we never flipped. The waves were actually too rough for us to go into to ... read more
