SANTIAGO Our trip from Mendoza to Santiago was pretty straight forward, except for the 365 curves on the way down from the Andes. We got to the Santiago bus station at about 1pm and met my parents there, who were on their way to Colombia from Mozambique, and stopping in Santiago for two nights. They had arranged a small apartment in the posh area of Las Condes in the Golf neighbourhood. It was a peaceful leafy suburb with lovely residential buildings and some office buildings, shops and restaurants dotted around. We spent the first day with my parents taking it easy and cooking dinner at the flat with the lovely wine we brought from Mendoza. The next morning they left pretty early for Colombia, and we stayed at the flat to sort out our plans for ... read more

PUERTO IGUAZU We arrived from the Brazilian side on the bus from the Paudimar hostel. It was pretty handy, since it took us straight from the hostel, through the borders and all the way to the national park in Argentina. The smoothtalking Antonio (Antonio Banderas as he introduced himself) was our very helpful and friendly driver... an avid Boca supporter. We got to the park early enough in the morning, and left all our bags in the bus with Antonio (there was a group of about 25 people doing the same thing as us)... he was going to take us to another hostel in the afternoon. The national park was huge, and we had a boat ride in the falls booked for 12:45, so we started with a walk around the top fo the falls. It ... read more

RIO We were pretty much ready to leave Rio to head south, when a little inconvenience interrupted our trip... Lorena picked up Chicken Pox (Varicela) from who knows where. On our last couple of planned days in Rio, we spent an afternoon in the beach at Ipanema, and went for a walk with Edu around Urca, but we were pretty lazy in general and Lorena did not seem to be feeling to well. The last day the sun was shining, and we had not yet been to the Sugar Loaf (Pan de Azucar), so eventhough Lorena was not feeling too energetic, I dragged her out in a taxi too the Sugar Loaf early in the afternoon. We got to the bottom of the two cable car rides and it was a beautiful sunny day. But we ... read more

SAO PAULO We got to Sao Paulo on Sunday morning after not much sleep on our 5 hour overnight flight. At the airport we got some money, and our Aiport Bus Service into town and to our hotel. Fortunately we had booked a cheap (for Sao Paulo prices) hotel previously, so we just had to get there. Our first impression was pretty good, especially because people just felt really friendly and ready to help you... the bus driver even went out of his usual route to drop us right in front of our Paulista Garden Hotel, taxi service! The hotel was in a really nice area of Sao Paulo, the Jardin Paulista, full of nice green residential streets with some nice shops, bars and restaurants dotted around. We did not plan to stay too long in ... read more

PUNO - Lake Titicaca In the morning we got on our trustworthy, and almost luxurious Cruz del Sur bus to Puno... it is definitely the best bus company in Peru, but also more expensive, and used mostly by gringo tourists. We got to Puno at about 2pm, and our plan was to do a quick visit to Lake Titicaca and only stay one night in Puno, since we were told there was not much to see in the town itself. And they were right, Puno is quite a dusty and unattractive large town on the edge of the lake Titicaca, at 3800mt above sea level. We found a cheap little hotel near the centre with the usual touts at the bus station, and after settling in and a little rest, we went out for a walk ... read more

After three relaxing weeks in Colombia we had our batteries charged up, and were ready to go again on our South American leg of our travels. I was not quite feeling that well though, since I had a nasty stomach bug on our last week in Colombia, which left me in bed for two days, and not that energetic (either that, or I just had too much to eat and too much Aguardiente Caucano). LIMA Our arrival in Lima was quite smooth, and the flight from Bogota quite quick. Eventhough we arrived at about 11pm, we had booked a hostel and a lift from the airport, so we had our man waiting for us with our names on a board in between the hoardes of arriving tourists and welcoming parties. So by midnight we were settled ... read more

Welcome to Miami, Bienvenido a Miami... If there is a part of the USA that has been colonized and taken over by Latin America, that is Miami. People in the street will even speak a mixture of Spanish and English, all tangled together in the same sentence, quite difficult to follow even. So Miami was pretty much the perfect pre-view to our one month break from travelling back in Colombia. It was quite an intense week filled with lots of food, drinks, friends, beach, party and not enough sleep. The first few days were relaxing enough, staying at Juan & Patri's apartment (my uncle and aunt) in Coral Gables. We enjoyed the sleep, the swimming pool and the gym to catch up with a bit of fitness. We also met up with my cousin Diego and ... read more

Mexico DF We arrived at Mexico City to visit Marta, Martin and Oscar. We hadn´t seen them for over a year since Martin's first birthday back in Johannesburg. Marta picked us up at the airport and we went straight to a country house for a Colombian Ajiaco. I also used the opportunity to continue Martin's football lessons as we left off over a year before. His shooting, and dribbling skills had suffered greatly after all that time of playing with car toys and cartoon movie characters. But his enthusiasm was still there considering the tantrum he made after I said that I was a bit tired and was going to take a break (the altitude in Mexico was hitting me hard, and the prospect of a cold beer was very tempting). We didn't stay too late ... read more

AUSTIN & SAN ANTONIO Our stop in Texas was not initially in our itinerary, but since we had to forcefully stop in Dallas on our way to Mexico, we decided to visit some good friends we had here and stay for a few days. Our flight from California was into Dallas, about 4 hours drive from Austin, and we made our way down on the Greyhound bus from the city centre. I would not exactly recommend choosing the Greyhound bus, at least not in Texas. It was full of people that either looked drunk, drugged, or just plain dangerous, and we did not exactly feel safe, but we made it through. We got to Austin and my friend Nirmal (from school in Swaziland) picked us up at the station and went out with his wife Sulma ... read more
