Sad to leave Queenstown after an awesome time, we got in our newly aquired Mazda Familia. We hit the road early(ish) Sunday morning on a 4 hour drive to Milford Sound; a national park south of Queenstown with incredibly beautiful lakes, mountains and rainforest areas. The drive down was very impressive with stunning views around every corner. After soaking up the views, we headed back North to Te Anau for the night. Here we had a wander, and a beer at the local, before bed. Monday morning was another early start for the drive to Wanaka. We arrived in the afternoon and had lunch by the crystal clear Lake Wanaka surrounded by snow topped mountains with bright blue skies. Having had enough of the natural beauty and in need of another adrenalin rush we decided to ... read more

After flying in from Cairns in a zombie like state after the night out, we arrived in Auckland in the early afternoon. A quick nap followed and then we wrapped up warm and explored the city a bit and in the evening had a reminiscant meal at a Thai restaurant to celebrate our arrival in New Zealand. The next afternoon was a quick flight to Queenstown where we booked in to a hostel and sorted out 3 days of Skiing (for Hazh and Dave, both experienced skiers) and 3 days of first time snowboard lessons for Mark. The resort of Cardrona was a one hour drive away from the hostel; the bus departed at 07:30 every morning! Luckily a free breakfast made up for the early starts. Dave and Hazh had a play around in the ... read more

The Australian leg of the trip was wrapped up by 2 nights at 'The Beach Hostel', Cairns. These 3 nights basically consisted of lying at the pool by day (it was a good chance to soak up the last sun that we would see for a while), and partying by night. We met our German counterparts here who were staying at the same hostel and we were thrown into a dorm with 3 young Swedes. It suited us well. The first night was spent out at the Rhino bar due to the 'free meal' we all fell for. One thing that sticks out from the night (among others) was Mark's expensive taxi ride home because he had forgotten the name of the hostel; his poor taxi driver was forced to drive all around the town's many ... read more

Nursing our hangovers from the previous night's shinaningans, we got up bright and early and drove up to Magnetic Island. Upon our arrival we bumped into Hendrik the German, who we met on the Habibi, aswell as a couple of Swedes, and spent the evening playing volleyball - followed by a fire on the beach. All very nice. The next morning we rented mountain bikes and explored the Island's various beaches and walks in search of koalas. We didn't spot any but had a good time none the less, chilling out and soaking up a few rays. That evening we went for a Burger King with the Swedes (very romantic) and then headed north to Cairns. After a long night's driving, and about 10 minutes from our night stop, we were pulled over by the fuzz ... read more

All exhasted and very hungry from the Fraser Island trip we had a group trip to an all you can eat Pizza Hut before saying our goodbyes and catching an early night. All still on a high from our amazing time at Fraser Island we got up early and set off in our Wicked Camper into the glorious sunshine, blasting out Bittersweet Symphony on our way to the town of 1770. We hired surf boards for the afternoon and tried our luck at surfing without an instructor, some of us with better results than others! We left late afternoon for a 10 hour drive towards Airlie Beach seperated by a nights sleep in a rest . A proper backpackers party resort and the launching pad for our whitsundays cruise. There were drunk packpackers and locals all ... read more

With the rain well behind us we arrived back in Hervey Bay after 3 awesome, though exhausting days on Fraser Island. Here is our story... After having to delay our trip for a day while the damage from 2 cyclones that hit the island was cleared up, we woke bright and early to meet our group, load up our stuff and collect our 4x4. Our group consisted of an Irish bloke, a German lad, 6 German girls and us three. The only eligible drivers were Dave and Mark, so, between them they would spend the next 3 days chauffeuring the group around some tough off road terrain and beaches. Some of the girls didn't have complete trust in this and requested to sit in the front to make sure the boys didn't play too hard with ... read more

We left Byron Bay and made the short journey down the road to the village of Nimbin, a former hippy settlement where weed has basically been legalised. A quick look around the 'museum', a coffee, and a trip to the local pub were the highlights, where chatting to the locals was an interesting if suddate experience. In an attempt to escape the bad weather, we headed north to Noosa in Queensland, on the Sunshine coast, a town famed for its surfing and National park. Unfortunatley the bad weather appeared to follow us north, as we were greeted by a tropical storm - one of the low points of the trip so far as we were expecting things to brighten up. Rather than mope about and feel sorry ourselves, the next day we visited the Australia Zoo, ... read more

So our journey west to the Blue Mountains was well worth it. We arrived at a campsite in Katoomba and pitched there for the night. The first night in the camper was a fun one, it was good to go 'back to basics' by cooking dinner on gas outside our van at the foot of the mountains. This was done in what felt like freezing conditions only achievable with a big box of red wine to hand. The next day we decided to take a days walk down and around the 'Grand Canyon' where we could get well in the mix of this national park wonder. The walk took a few hours before we jumped back in our camper and headed for our next stop, a rest area off the Eastern highway. These rest areas offer ... read more

Another night bus ride was followed by an afternoon in Bangkok where we visited the big reclining Buddha in Wat Po and had another Thai massage. On the 15th we arrived in cold, wet Sydney and had a stroll around the harbour area. We then were later reunited with Dave. We headed to the "lively" Kings Cross area for a big night on the town for Dave's birthday but were greeted by a ghost town. Apparently, the Aussies don't go out during the week, and even less so in the Winter. We accidentally found ourselves in a gay bar during our search for a lively place to drink but we managed to salvage the night by going for a slap up meal at a posh Indian restaurant before heading to the local backpacker hot spot. My excursion to Perth, WA, has been a little different from the time I experienced in Thailand. It is mid winter here where temperatures reach a respectable 18 degrees but clear skies mean night time temperatures drop to near freezing some nights. I have been staying with my family on farmland in the hills surrounding Perth. They have a large plot of land on which a calf has been born since I have arrived here. That was quite an event to witness, one which will remain with me for a while I imagine. I went hunting one night in the bush with my cousin and his friends. Armed with a spot light and rifles on the back of a ute (Australian word for truck), we scowerd the land for rabbits (and Kangeroos) but came away empty ... read more
