Paraiso is always a fun place to go. It is a really tranquil place. People don't move too fast, there is always that danger that you'll rush up your day. Moving too fast in Paraiso has a sort of extension chord in a vacuum effect. It is unnatural to move quickly in a place called Paradise... Unless your at a drag race that is. When participating in a drag race, it's ok to move fast. I would even be so bold as to say that quick movements are encouraged. Just keep it between the ditches and push your foot to the [View Full Entry]

Ever wonder what people are thinking on the other side of the the world? Chances are, if your reading this, you do. Well today is your lucky day, because the youth of Honduras has a message to send out to the world. To be more specific, my tenth grade English students have a message to send. I am confident you will find their views not to much different from those of North American teens. Please note that I have not altered any of these messages in any way. As a class, we worked together to grammatically improve our writing, they aren't [View Full Entry]

What a pout for the camera.
A grumpled and fairly crunkly bus rolled me off to Paraiso this last weekend. I was going to see Karina, who I haven't seen in about a month, and to celebrate Febe's birthday. Febe is my soon to be, yet already considered, niece. She is two years old and refers to me as "Tio Clee," or as we would say in English, "Uncle Clee." Febe is a pleasantly bouncy and a surprisingly quick little ankle-biter, with hair the same texture of a foptoff whizzlepuff, a small and hairy insect, indigenous to a very specific region of Comayagua. The closest thing I [View Full Entry]

If you ever find yourself wandering the countless intersections, laced throughout the streets of Comayagua, and you happen to stumble upon a corner pastry shop simply named "Coffee and Cakes," do yourself a favor and step inside. You will be pleasantly surprised. For just beyond eye shot of the countless cookies, cakes, tarts, parfaits, puddings, souffles, pies, and other pastries you will find yesterdays stale doughnuts. Chances are crusty croissants don't wet your appetite, assuming your ears aren't twice the length of your head, that is. What I mean is, rabbits love donuts. Especiall [View Full Entry]

This morning, on my walk to school, I couldn't help but notice that Barak Obama was voted into office last night. This is because it was on the front page of every Honduran newspaper I could find. It was interesting to see all the different headlines. The really funny thing, for me at least, was to see the news call someone a negro. In Honduras most people refer to African Americans as "negros" or "personas negros." Its not a racist thing, the word "negro" in Spanish means black. So when the newspaper types "los negros" they are literally saying "the blacks." [View Full Entry]

"Meester, you vote for Barak Osama or Maaa... uh... Maaa como se dice? Ah jes, McCain." Was my greeting from a few students today. The election buzz didn't quite catch on as much as I had expected. The US government directly effects Honduras almost monthly. You wouldn't know it if you watched CNN, but George Bush meets with Manuel Zelaya quite often. One of my students, Ramon, did ask me about our nation's heroes. I told him that we have quite a few heroes; Abe Lincoln, George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Harriet Tubman, Booker T, Washington, Hulk Hogan, and so [View Full Entry]

When I moved here to Honduras I made the decision to leave most all my warm clothing at home, in Buffalo. I visited here last December, around Christmas, and the weather was very nice. Usually Honduras is warm during the day and cooler at night time. It is a comfortable cool, sometimes accompanied by a slow breeze. Comayagua tends to be a hotter city than Paraiso, but cooler than Tegus'. However, none of these cities come close to San Pedro Sula. San Pedro can get muggy, being on the coast an all. Here, in Comayagua, the weather has taken a bitter [View Full Entry]

I treated myself with some club soda and cranberry juice.
This week we are continuing last weeks exams. We spent the majority of last week on RED ALERT so that meant we only had two days of exams. Monday, Tuesday and Friday were spent watching movies and playing video games. The good news is that we all got paid on Wednesday. So I filled my fridge with all sorts of tasty treats. Cranberry juice, club soda, flour tortillas, beans, pepper jack cheese, green peppers, fresh milk, and chocolate. I think I covered all the bases. On Thursday a few of my 10th and 11th graders had a football game. El Alba [View Full Entry]

Seeing as how the majority of the readers don't understand a lick of Spanish I have translated Karina's blog from yesterday. Keep in mind that this translation is not word for word. In order for Her story to make sense in English I need to change the order of some sentences and the use of certain words. Latinos have a very distinct way of speaking so this might seem a little strange. They are very passionate people and as you will discover they love to talk about love. There are about five different ways to say "I love you." So a [View Full Entry]
