Mwah
What a pout for the camera. A grumpled and fairly crunkly bus rolled me off to Paraiso this last weekend. I was going to see Karina, who I haven't seen in about a month, and to celebrate Febe's birthday. Febe is my soon to be, yet already considered, niece. She is two years old and refers to me as "Tio Clee," or as we would say in English, "Uncle Clee." Febe is a pleasantly bouncy and a surprisingly quick little ankle-biter, with hair the same texture of a foptoff whizzlepuff, a small and hairy insect, indigenous to a very specific region of Comayagua. The closest thing I can relate one to would be the texture of Febe's hair. Being two years old, Febe still bounces when she walks. The lack fully developed legs tends to have this effect on small people. Although sufficiently insulated, take note that Febe is not so much joyfully stuffed, but more engagingly cheeky. She comes with the usual amount of high squealed giggles and from time to time has been known to savagely vomit out bloodletting scream-shouts into the ears of unsuspecting adults.
As a whole Febe is chiefly pleasing to all five senses. However, as mentioned above, she has her
Chillin
Panda chillin in his frosting park with Shitzoo moments of pang and downright unsavolting tormenfliction. I never have to deal with any of this nonsense, being the uncle. I do, however, observe from a safe distance so that the blasting zone cannot compromise my current facial features. I have discovered, through my fastidious research, that these momentary lapses, into benumbing sharp assaults on all that is peaceful, tend to pass in under five minutes. I should also add that although unpredictable, such an event comes about only once or twice a day.
Like I said, Febe is chiefly pleasing to all five senses. She still has that new baby smell, so no need to hang one of those cardboard pine trees from the back of her shorts. She is designed with a rather compact body and the most modestly colossal head I have ever seen, so as to render the same effect as that of a cartoon. Don't get me wrong, her head isn't ginormously rotund, hulking, mountainously bulbus, or even the slightest bit beefy. That is to say, you don't notice the size of her head upon first impression. When compared to other children with upgraded cranium capacity, Febe comes off as rather normal. I have
Pain
There is pain behind those eyes. seen some very young children with some very large heads and it is an image forever burned into my normal sized brain. It is for a number of different reasons that I remember Febe.
First, she has a small voice. Not quite squeaky, but not quite puny; as mentioned before, her voice can project itself into the mountains. The thing about Febe is, she has a pleasant voice when she chooses to use it. Similar to a lot of other little rug rats, Febe's voice is high pitched and cartoonish. However, it carries a heavy value of intelligence. She is quick to answer and even quicker to give orders. This is the second thing I like about Febe, her willingness to communicate with adults. Not just speak to, mind you, but mimic as well. I remember a time when Febe did an impression of me putting on cologne, complete with sound effects and arm motions. Febe is also fast. Whether she is speaking or moving, she always has the ability to make haste. Although when exploring new things, I have noticed that she tends to take her time. Good stuff, Febe is. For this reason it is my pleasure
Pinata
Right now she is thinking, "Please make it stop." to visit her on her birthday. Not only did I visit, but I brought friend, a fluffy Grey mouse. One of my toys from when I was a drool dribbling, question asking, ankle biting rug rat.
Kid's birthdays are always filled with lots of candy, presents and little monsters scurrying around. Such was the case with Febe's birthday this last weekend. Of course there was a pinata, filled with all sorts of surgery delights, and a wonderful cake with a panda. The panda was just sort of chillin in his happy little frosting world with a little plastic Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu didn't look happy.
Febe had a pinata made to resemble the head of Strawberry Shortcake. If you remember our discussion about large heads then you will enjoy Miss Fresita's, for it was only about the size of Febe's entire body. Bright red hair and a big pink hat was the only guardians against her cruel destiny. The life of a pinata is a sad one. They are born into a cold vat of sweaty white newspapers and then, as if to mock their fate, are given big dopey smiles.
"Yes come one come all,"
Ouch
"Help me!" the pinata seems to say, "come and beat me with your sticks. Don't be shy. See my smile? I really enjoy my job!"
Times like this make me think, "What if Pinatas could speak?" What do you think a pinata would really say to children on their birthdays? "Hey kid, seeing as how this is my last 30 minutes on earth and your the one whose gonna be takin' me out, I just want to tell you that I hope you have a lousy birthday. That cone your mother strapped to your head makes you look fat and half these kids only came for the cake and party favors! Happy birthday, Jerko."
And as I think about this my mind starts to wander towards other things. What if trees could scream? Do batteries ever get claustrophobic? How must my shoes feel when my feet hurt? Eventually people start to notice that far off look in my eyes, as I'm holding my camera just so slightly aimed towards the ground. What they are thinking about my current state, I'm not quite sure, because to be frank, I don't know how long I have been staring off like that.
Febe n crew
Febe with her cousin and aunt. Where was I? Oh yes, birthday parties... Other than the pinata and birthday cake there were the usual presents and birthday songs. Karina's family never makes a big ordeal out of presents, so each one was pretty simple. Little plastic dolls, a pink plastic castle thingy, stuffed mouse... what can you really get a two year old? Everything eventually ends up getting tasted and then discarded. So I guess the perfect gift would be candy buttons. I know that would make me happy. When you think about it, candy buttons are the perfect gift for most occasions. Candy buttons are colorful, you can share them with friends, they taste great and are low in cholesterol, the first anniversary gift is paper, they have a fun bumpy texture, you can cut them into shapes, they are cheap and most of all they are pure sugar. Who doesn't love that? I guess the only question is: How do the buttons feel about all this?
Hope you all enjoy the photos. To see more photos of Saturday night church, ironing hair, antique sewing machines, and sunsets in paradise please visit this link to my flickr page.
