So the last blog was when Marianne came to Honduras in January I´m pretty sure. So since then I went to Colombia for Liam and Maria´s wedding, which I´m fairly certain the entire world thought was amazing! It was pretty fun to not have to pass through the International Arrival line at the Honduran airport when I came back. Being a Peace Corps volunteer, I have Honduran residency for two years, so I got to look on as all the gringo missionary groups or whatever else there was had to wait in unbelievably long lines and struggle with Spanish as they were entering the country. Also since being back, I´ve turned 23! This is now the second birthday I´ve celebrated in Central America, I turned 21 in El Salvador. Although turning 21 was infinitely more fun, ... read more

So for the last month or so it has been unusually cold in San Lucas…unusually cold meaning maybe around 45 degrees F or so. But hey, when you need to take bucket showers, that’s plenty cold! The thing about the cold here though is that the wind whips and the air is cold, but it is always the most beautiful sunny day. Had Syracuse had nearly the same kind of winter weather, I guarantee you Le Moyne College applications would increase exponentially! Thankfully, however, it’s starting to warm back up again. This past rainy season was also unusual in that it was fairly dry. Everybody keeps on saying how last years rainy season was horrible, daily torrential downpours for hours on end from around May - October. When it rains, the roads literally disintegrate. So anytime ... read more

Christmas and New Years was filled with each form of surprise one can find. For someone in my situation, the celebrations were all completely new and obscure. To say that I found a close similarity to what I have known Christmas to be, would be a lie. Honduras expresses it's joy in a way that is not too uncommon from the roots of North American family ideals, however what is manifested from those roots is something different; borrowing from each flavor, color and smell existing in it's own atmosphere. Christmas is hot, dry and dusty. The wind floats through the streets, picking up emptied bags of snacks and displaces them into the air as if they were some forsaken type of decoration, forgotten by a bleak faced child with streaks of dried mud clinging underneath her ... read more

In just a few short hours I will be headed off to Paraiso. I have about two weeks of vacation time to kill and I'm not doing that here in Comayagua. Hopefully I can find an internet cafe with a speed worthy of my Gringo tastes. Danli and Paraiso tend to have really slow cafes. If I'm lucky I will venture into Nicaragua and post a blog. I guess we will see how far Karina lets me out on the leash. She seemed pretty confident about a Nicaragua trip some time next week. I had a pinata made in my likeness and I will be carrying that across the country this afternoon. It is a gift for Karina. So enjoy the Christmas vacation, if you get one, and take advantage of all that snow. Unlike Buffalo, ... read more

Paraiso was a drag

Paraiso is always a fun place to go. It is a really tranquil place. People don't move too fast, there is always that danger that you'll rush up your day. Moving too fast in Paraiso has a sort of extension chord in a vacuum effect. It is unnatural to move quickly in a place called Paradise... Unless your at a drag race that is. When participating in a drag race, it's ok to move fast. I would even be so bold as to say that quick movements are encouraged. Just keep it between the ditches and push your foot to the floor. Paradise racer knows this theory all too well and they chose last weekend to give a public demonstration. The rules were pretty simple, pay money and then race for more money. Everybody and their ... read more

A grumpled and fairly crunkly bus rolled me off to Paraiso this last weekend. I was going to see Karina, who I haven't seen in about a month, and to celebrate Febe's birthday. Febe is my soon to be, yet already considered, niece. She is two years old and refers to me as "Tio Clee," or as we would say in English, "Uncle Clee." Febe is a pleasantly bouncy and a surprisingly quick little ankle-biter, with hair the same texture of a foptoff whizzlepuff, a small and hairy insect, indigenous to a very specific region of Comayagua. The closest thing I can relate one to would be the texture of Febe's hair. Being two years old, Febe still bounces when she walks. The lack fully developed legs tends to have this effect on small people. Although ... read more

Seeing as how the majority of the readers don't understand a lick of Spanish I have translated Karina's blog from yesterday. Keep in mind that this translation is not word for word. In order for Her story to make sense in English I need to change the order of some sentences and the use of certain words. Latinos have a very distinct way of speaking so this might seem a little strange. They are very passionate people and as you will discover they love to talk about love. There are about five different ways to say "I love you." So a few things will sound a little different, but it is the closest translation I could come up with. Hondurans have a lot of phrases and word usage that either doesn't exist in English or just ... read more

Today we have a special entry from Karina. As requested she has composed her version of the "How we met" story. We spent the weekend together formulating some plans for the wedding and I told her that she needed to write down her version. At first she was a bit apprehensive, but then I told her about her widespread fame. "Karina, do you know that your famous in multiple cities? Its true. People in Buffalo know who you are, people in New Orleans and North Carolina know too. Not only that, but people that I haven't even met know about our story and they want to hear your version. Give the people what they want, Karina." After she figured out how to use Microsoft word in English she buzzed right along. Usually our evenings together are ... read more

Ok... so I haven't written a blog entry for more than a week now. For those of you who read them diligently, I am truly sorry. For those of you who find these blog updates to be a just another spam e-mail, your welcome. That being said, lets begin with today's entry. This last weekend I decided to go visit Karina for Dia de La Biblia. It is a day when Christians have church services in the park, carry their Bibles in public and (you guessed it) march like it was going out of style. Seriously, these people really love to march. Every time something is celebrated a marching band walks by complete with color guards and baton twirlers. Its like the ultimate punchline to a joke or the grand solution to the most difficult of ... read more
