Crossing the border
Today we have a special entry from Karina. As requested she has composed her version of the "How we met" story. We spent the weekend together formulating some plans for the wedding and I told her that she needed to write down her version. At first she was a bit apprehensive, but then I told her about her widespread fame. "Karina, do you know that your famous in multiple cities? Its true. People in Buffalo know who you are, people in New Orleans and North Carolina know too. Not only that, but people that I haven't even met know about our [View Full Entry]

This morning I woke to the sound of helicopters. It was around 8:30 in the morning, I know that because I glanced back at the clock that sits at the head of my bead. The last few nights I have taken to sleeping in reverse to see what effect it will have on my nocturnal libretto. So far the results have been boldly positive. I have also removed all access hair from my scalp to create a better intake of oxygen. So these results could be caused by either the reverse order in which I sleep or my bald head. I [View Full Entry]

Well it is official. For those who have not heard the news, Karina and I are getting married. Apologies if I haven't been clear with the details, but I've been busy with school lately. We have exams next week so I have been writing tests and reviews in a crazed fury. About a year or so in the past, in a land far far away, I met Karina. I was a leader in our High school youth group from East Aurora, NY. We had made arrangements for a mission trip to Honduras. Our destination was a place called Paraiso. I had [View Full Entry]

Don't let the title of this blog confuse you. This is not a review of Cormac McCarthy's latest novel, "The Road." A post apocalyptic story about a man and his son, trying to survive in a harsh lifeless earth. But, I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It provided a classic example of the descriptively bleak and realistic style of McCarthy. I couldn't put it down and I ended up finishing it, to the amazement of my students, in only a few days. However, this blog is not about a book. In fact the road I am referring to [View Full Entry]

This is a photo taken during class, in the middle of a lesson. Count the number of students paying attention.
Soft Hot Chewy Sugar coated Steamy fresh and hot to the touch. This is what the average student of El Alba has to look forward to after any given school day. As the bell rings the collection of students squeeze themselves through the doors like panicked cows through cold steel gates. Shoulder to shoulder each one pushing and screaming towards the same ultimate goal: freedom. However, unlike animals, humans often escape TO something rather than FROM something. Although it is true that my students are escaping FROM the grueling 40 minute long torture sessions, in most cases [View Full Entry]

Ok... so I haven't written a blog entry for more than a week now. For those of you who read them diligently, I am truly sorry. For those of you who find these blog updates to be a just another spam e-mail, your welcome. That being said, lets begin with today's entry. This last weekend I decided to go visit Karina for Dia de La Biblia. It is a day when Christians have church services in the park, carry their Bibles in public and (you guessed it) march like it was going out of style. Seriously, these people really love to [View Full Entry]

This is our magic school bus. It takes us into outer space.
The past week or so has been so busy with days off that I never had a chance to talk about our Field trip last Friday. We all know that Wednesday was kid's day, but I might have neglected to tell you that the celebration cut off was Seventh grade. Needless to say I had many a classroom full of very distracted children. "Meester, let us play. We have de classes every day. All the other teachers geeve us... ONE day all of de weeks for to play. Meester, you do not give us because you HATE us! Meester lets play, [View Full Entry]

On our way to the parades.
So here in Honduras Independence day lasts from September 13th to September 15th. This year it fell on a weekend, so by the time Friday came around everybody started to feel the buzz. I celebrated by going to visit Karina in El Paraiso. No surprise there. On Friday night we all relaxed and talked about the parades and all the different schools in town. Here in Honduras each school marches. They all have big marching bands, accompanied by baton twirlers and children carrying fruit and coffee. People line the streets, everyone holding their umbrellas in one hand and their cameras in [View Full Entry]

Honduras beats Jamaica: Honduras 2, Jamaica 0 Tonight the city was electric after the defeat of Jamaica. The win was a triumph over the long time rivals and will provide a huge step up into the World cup qualifications. Although every game here is treated like the Stanley cup finals, THIS game seemed more important than any other. Why that is, I just don't know. The Hondurans just love beating on the Jamaicans. From what I gathered the Jamaicans play football like the Senators play Hockey. Here in Comayagua, the city seemed to hum with excitement as they prepared for the [View Full Entry]

Here are the little devils in 7th grade.
This last weekend Honduras played Canada. I told all my students that Canada would win and they freaked out. Apparently Canada has never beaten Honduras. Last time the score was 4 to 0. This time Honduras beat Canada 2 to 1, so needless to say my Monday was filled with a lot of, "Meester... Canada? Que paso?" All in all it was a good Monday. I enjoy Mondays because my schedule is very easy. I have first period off and then I have a free period before lunch. I used my free time Yesterday to watch the band practice.
