As Nikki and I decided to have an almost stress free wedding by going to Sweden, just the two of us, to get married there we thought we’d have a wedding reception back home in the UK to celebrate with friends and family. But being that we had the most untraditional wedding ever we thought that we should keep the ‘untraditional’ theme by having not one but two wedding receptions, the first of which we had in our garden over four months after our actual wedding. Why did we have such a big gap between our wedding and the reception? To wait for good weather of course and we were lucky that we actually had good weather plus if we'd have had it in February we wouldn't have been able to make a very big announcement ... read more

It always amazes me when you travel to another country and have mutual friends with someone on your trip. Our last entry for this trip is about the many champagne houses in Epernay and Oger. A 9:20 meeting time on a sunday morning means there were bound to be a few sore heads in the group, luckily Nikki and I were not one of those people. We hopped on our coach and made our way to our first champagne house, The Moet et Chandon house, one of the biggest champagne houses. It has over 28km of champagne cellars beneath its grounds and sits proudly at the start of Avenue de Champagne, a street lined with the biggest champagne houses. After sitting through Moet’s most recent promotional video (yawn) we started our tour, the cellars are much ... read more

When Nikki and I first booked our trip to Reims in the Champagne region of France our imaginations instantly began to conjure images of a huge chateau set in rolling hills basking in sunshine whilst the two of us sat out with a glass of champagne and some fine French cuisine. We took the TGV (Train a Grande Vitesse, meaning high speed train) from Paris to Reims and as we pulled in to Reims station it looked a lot more built up than we had both imagined. Our hotel was a 5 minute walk from the station and as we crossed the road from the station to head towards our hotel our image of Reims was shattered. Our hotel was just off of the main street and along that street it was lined with a number ... read more

After just two hours and fifteen minutes we arrived in Paris. Although we knew we were in another country it was strange to think we could get to another country faster than it takes to visit Nikki’s mum in the north of England. As we walked along the street we found a restaurant for dinner. If the chic French decor and quaint patisseries on every corner were not enough to convince us we weren’t in London any more then the menu was. Featured on the mains was ‘Raw Beef’. We’re not talking steak cooked blue, we’re talking about a plate with raw beef on it and sat just outside was a woman eating just that, most definitely not what I would call good food. We arrived late so after dinner (which included escargot) we went straight ... read more

I have never written a blog solely about food before but the restaurants we visited deserve their own blog (plus I wrote a lot in my last blog about things to do/things we did in Dubai and didn’t want to bore you all with one huge blog). On our first night we visited the world’s tallest restaurant, At.mosphere, on the 124th floor in The Burj Khalifa. We were very lucky to get a place at all as you had to book weeks in advance and we called literally the day before. We couldn’t get a place in the grill restaurant but did get in to the lounge, the only difference being the menu, both restaurants are on the same floor. With its own entrance located through a car park and having to pass two sets of ... read more

Does size matter?

A question many men probably already know the answer to. A question all women have known the answer to all of their adult lives (women are more intelligent after all). Is it true what they say about men that like things big? What I'm trying to get at here is if what they say about those men is true, that they are trying to overcompensate in some way, then the people who had the idea for almost every structure in Dubai have got a big problem (pardon the pun)........that is of course IF size matters! ;-) In Dubai everything is big. As soon as one huge building/manmade island in some unique shape/mall is finished someone is building another one....that’s bigger. It has the world’s tallest building. The world’s only 7 star hotel and The world’s highest ... read more

Our fairytale white wedding in Swedish Lapland. The morning of our wedding I awoke early in a warm bed, in a cosy chalet. A welcome contrast to the previous night spent in the “ice fishing” ice room in the ice hotel. I gave a kiss to my husband “to be” who immediately said, “happy wedding day” with his eyes still closed. He does make me smile. We had to go into Kiruna to sort the papers to get married. I wondered what else there was to do. We had already spent an hour before the registrar in London, declared we are not brother and sister (despite the assumptions of a few people we have met on our travels) and had the notice of marriage posted in the registry. After a further half an hour waiting in ... read more

On the morning of the wedding I was woke up with a kiss from Nikki, Nikki and I are extremely competitive, to the extent we even make wishing each other happy anniversary a competition, I knew that as soon as I opened my eyes she was going to say something along the lines of “Today’s our wedding day” so I had to beat her to it. After the kiss and before I opened my eyes I said “Happy wedding day” I heard Nikki laugh at which point I opened my eyes and whispered “I said it first” followed by Nikki saying quite loudly “No that’s cheating”. Ah what a great way to start the day lol. We had to meet at the reception at 9am to go in to Kiruna to register our wedding and sort ... read more

Nikki and I had our first date on Monday 21st February 2005 & on that day in London it was snowing, when deciding when and where to get married it seemed a simple decision to me, Monday 21st February 2011 in the snow.....but not in London, at The IceHotel! I am the organised one of the two of us, so usually I carry everything and look after everything when we travel however seeing as we could only take one item of hand luggage on the plane with us I took my suit and Nikki took her dress, which means camera, passports etc had to be carried in a folder which I had to put in my pocket. When we arrived at Heathrow and checked in we went for breakfast and Nikki started to look through all ... read more

What to do for my Nan’s birthday? Let me tell you a little bit about my Nan first of all, she is an amazing woman and if there was a picture in the dictionary of ‘A Cockney Nan’ it would be her picture (if you’re not sure what a cockney is Google it or search youtube for ‘Catherine Tate Nan’ that IS my Nan!). In the past Nikki and I have taken my Nan to the theatre and other shows but my Nan doesn’t like people making too much of a fuss and is most content sat having a cup of tea & eating a cake so Nikki suggested tea at The Ritz. As we got near the entrance the staff could see my Nan had a walking stick and asked if she would like to ... read more
