Today is the day Nikki & I go to pick up our rings before the wedding (Well pick up Nikki’s ring anyway, I got mine for Christmas), we both woke up really excited about getting her ring but the jewellers was not open until 11 so decided to take advantage of the fact with live in London (and the fact we had so much energy) to visit The Natural History Museum and The Victoria & Albert Museum. From the outside the Natural History Museum is an amazing building, it is absolutely huge (much like the queue), when we eventually got in you are greeted by a huge mould of a dinosaur skeleton, as you get closer the vastness of the museum becomes clear. The detail in the brick work is phenomenal with lots of little animals ... read more

Shanghai, our last stop whilst in China, although I live in a city & LOVE getting out of London, the city boy inside me took over, it was good to be back in a city after staying in some of the most remote hotels I have ever stayed in. I was most excited about visiting the Bund but I think Nikki was most excited about our western buffet at the hotel when we arrived, which was amazing by the way! As we drove from the airport I had never seen so many roads in my life, it looked like something out of a film based in the future, all of the roads that were raised had neon lights underneath that made them look like runways. Our first morning we were woke up early AGAIN by our ... read more

Now it was time to visit Leshan & the 233 feet tall Buddha carved in the rock, our time in Leshan was very brief, we left the cold & rain of Emei & headed off, I thought Leshan would be cold & rainy too so I put layers on again to keep warm. I was exhausted because of our noisy neighbours AGAIN so had a little sleep in the car on the way there, when I woke up the sun was shining & you could actually see the sky, needless to say I did not need the layers. We had to take a detour because a bridge to get to the Buddha was under construction but eventually we arrived, we got on a boat & had to put life jackets, again we were the only western ... read more

By the time we arrived in Emei from Ya’an we checked into our hotel in the foothills of Mount Emei just to be told the chef had gone home & it was too late for us to eat, so our guide suggested taking us to a local restaurant “Don’t be put off from the way the restaurants look on the outside the food is really good” said the guide, I was a little worried but trusted her judgement, first of all we had to check into our room. We were given the key to our room & when I opened the door it felt as though I was walking back outside, I could hear crickets & other animals like they were inside the room “I hope they haven’t left the windows open” I said to Nikki, ... read more

Our guide told us that the ancient Chinese believed that China was created by the first woman on earth, a Chinese Eve (I can’t remember the Chinese name), when Eve got to Ya’an she was so tired from making the rest of China that she didn’t finish building the roof & that is why it always rains in Ya’an, because the roof is leaking. When we left Chengdu to go to Ya’an you could actually see the weather deteriorating with every passing mile, at one point it was raining so much that it looked misty, when I looked out of the window of the car I couldn’t seen any buildings because of the mist all I could see was the floor about ten feet around the car and the rain coming down around us, this is ... read more

When I first found out that tourists could pay to have their picture taken with a real baby Panda my feelings were mixed, on one hand how awesome would it be to hold a baby Panda but on the other hand how could anyone exploit an endangered species like that. Then I heard the conditions, there is a time slot of 30 minutes a day when tourists can actually have their picture with the Panda, if the Panda isn’t feeling well the day is cancelled, if it is too hot the day is cancelled, basically unless conditions are perfect for the Panda so that they will be comfortable the day is cancelled. When we were queuing everyone in the queue were made to put on protective plastic shoes & gloves and an all in one blue ... read more

When we first met our guide she asked us if we liked Beijing & then said “It’s a little less built up in Xi’an, you won’t see as many signs in English here”, won’t see as many I hardly saw any in Beijing, I’m so glad we had a guide with us! At Beijing airport on our way to Xi’an I joined the back of the queue to check my bags in & get my boarding pass & saw a little old woman push in front of me, I didn’t say anything......until she said “excuse me” & asked me to move out of the way so her husband could join her “excuse me, I was in front of you & you have just pushed in” I said to which she simply turned to me with a ... read more

October 1st 2010

I used to think that when I researched my trips I was pretty good at finding the best time to visit, when we arrived in Beijing it was one of the biggest bank holidays in China, The National Day, which ironically lasts seven days from the 1st - 7th of October, we arrived on the 2nd & I was totally unaware of the bank holiday. For those of you not familiar with the term ‘camera rage’ let me explain, it’s a little bit like road rage but camera rage is something you get when you are trying to line up a picture, you’re just adjusting the focus about to get the perfect shot & some impatient f*** walks in to your picture. That isn’t necessarily the whole problem, it becomes the problem however when just as ... read more

This is something I have always wanted to do but something always seemed to come up that prevented me from going (mainly friends making excuses). In April 2008 I got engaged and when we set a date for the wedding there was only one place I wanted my stag weekend and that was Pamplona and the festival of San Fermin, also known as the running of the bulls. San Fermin starts on the 6th July and finishes on the 14th of July every year, at 8am every morning roughly 6-7 bulls, weighing approx 650kgs (about 1450lbs) each are released on to the streets and they run from their pen in to the bull ring about 800 metres away. The run is up a slight hill the entire time, especially at the beginning, there are only two ... read more

Egypt is a place I’d always wanted to go to, who hasn’t? The pyramids, the Sphinx, Karnak Temple, some great dive sites, the list goes on and whilst there I though why not visit Jordan, home of the Temple that is in the Indiana Jones and the last crusade (I’m such an 80’s baby) and also home to the Dead Sea, where you can supposedly float unassisted. We started off on a 4 day cruise along the Nile aboard the Viking Princess. We started in Luxor where we spent the night after our flight and woke up bright and early for our first trip, a visit to the Colossi of Memnon, 2 huge statues along the Nile. After that we went to the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens. We all got told ... read more
