Back on the boat, we spent another day meandering down the Mekong with cards & beer high on the agenda. Quite late in the afternoon we visited the Pakou Caves, which houses thousands of Buddah images. Luang Prabang was our final destination & after dinner we checked out the local markets before heading back to our resort style guesthouse, which has awesome views of the Khan River.... read more

After a short boat trip across the river, we were processed through Laos immigration & caught a Tuk Tuk to begin our two day boat journey down the Mekong. Along the way we toured a small village before arriving in the trading port of Pak Beng. Our local guide Vong took us to a temple (more stairs) where we caught the Monks & Novices having a bit of a party. The town itself was very small & only had electricity (from generators) between 6-10pm each day. I sampled a local dish called Larp (awesome) for dinner and we headed back to the guesthouse afterwards by torchlight. The children in this town were so cute, they all crowded around for photos & giggled furiously when showed their images on digital camera. A really great experience.... read more

After being pleasantly surprised by waking up with an almost non existant hangover, I boarded a minivan heading north. Our first stop was to Rong Rhunian, an amazing white temple designed & built by a local artist. I purchased a few prints from the adjoining gallery to send home & far from being an art critique, I really liked the amazing detail & bright colours the artist uses in his work. We stopped for lunch at a restuarant called Cabbages & Condoms, which is a non profit organization in Thailand that works with locals to promote safe sex practices & birth/population control. Back on the road for the afternoon, we arrived at the border town of Chiang Khong & had dinner overlooking Laos across the Mekong River.... read more

After our overnight bus journey to Changmai, we transferred to our guesthouse for breakfast. Of the many activities on offer in Changmai, most of the group elected to go Elephant riding, followed by bamboo rafting. The elephants were amazing - a nice slow pace through the jungle, sometimes making new tracks in search of food. At one stage I was more than a little nervous as we were right on a cliff edge & all I could think about was this huge creature loosing it's footing and me being crushed to death as we tumbled down the embankment into the river below. Of course my fears were completely unfounded and after a light snack (for the elephant), we meandered on to rejoin the rest of the group. instead of bamboo rafting (too hot & slow for ... read more

Tody began with a trip to a Buddhist temple, then onto a local market. Vicki bought some exotic fruits for everybody to try & we wandered around marvelling at the vast array of unusual food for sale. The animal produce was most interesting, with everything from live turtles to chickens feet for sale. Afterwards a small group decided to explore the city on foot, although we found many areas restricted as celebrations marking the 60th Anniversary of the Kings ascention to the throne were in full swing. Brightly coloured presidential Longtail boats were moored at one location & we watched the formal procession that night on television. Bright yellow t-shirts were on sale EVERYWHERE, which the Thai's will wear for the next year! Apparently yellow is the King's colour as it represents the day on which ... read more

After a leisurely sleep in , I set out on foot to explore Kaosan Road (not to be confused with Khe San) and the surrounding area. Overwhelmed by all the shops, sights & smells, I took the relaxing option of a Thai massage. The group for my first tour Bangkok to Hanoi (Intrepid trip code LSV) met and consists of twelve people. Our leader Vicki Gosling is from Sydney & has been living in Asia for more than five years. Terry is a trainee leader accompanying our group. He is Thai and the remaining ten travellers come from Australia, Canada, Ireland, USA, Scotland, Denmark & Germany. After the meeting we went out to dinner & started getting aquainted. Those who weren't ready for bed headed out for 'buckets' at the local service station... Confused??? Well by ... read more

I can't believe it is almost ten years to the day since I left Australia to go live in Canada for a year and here I am, fleeing the country once again. This morning went quite quickly with last minute packing & panicking on the agenda and after a quick stop to collect some photos, it was off to the airport. In typical Nicolle style we pushed the limits of time & ended up with only a few minutes for farewells before I boarded the plane. After transferring to the International terminal in Sydney, I had a couple of hours to sit around & contemplate what the next year has in store, before boarding a British Airways flight to Bangkok. The first hiccup came when I discovered that my sleeping bag had become detached from my ... read more
