Local guide, Chiang Mai, Thailand
After our overnight bus journey to Changmai, we transferred to our guesthouse for breakfast. Of the many activities on offer in Changmai, most of the group elected to go Elephant riding, followed by bamboo rafting. The elephants were amazing - a nice slow pace through the jungle, sometimes making new tracks in search of food. At one stage I was more than a little nervous as we were right on a cliff edge & all I could think about was this huge creature loosing it's footing and me being crushed to death as we tumbled down the embankment into the river below. Of course my fears were completely unfounded and after a light snack (for the elephant), we meandered on to rejoin the rest of the group. instead of bamboo rafting (too hot & slow for me), I elected to travel downstream on the minibus & wait by the riverside for the others to arrive. It was quite peaceful & an array of butterflies joined me - it was very surreal, right out of a David Attinborough documentary! We visited a local market & experimented (a litle) for lunch before heading back to the guesthouse where we met up with a

local guide who took us on a tour of the Doi Suthep Temple. After climbing over 300 steps we overlooked the city (beauiful) and watched the monks perform their evening prayers. Dinner consisted of some awesome local dishes & then a spot of shopping. After a long day, we met for drinks (too many) and a few games of pool at the local Irish pub O'Malleys. We stayed till stumps & stumbled home sometime after midnight with an anticipated medium sized hangover to come tomorrow.
