Well here I am...I'm finally in Australia, my final port of call...a place I now call home. Just gotta learn the language! Australia's an amzing place. The first thing I noticed was how BIG it is. Australia's BIG. Actually, it's not just BIG it's HUGE-MONGOUS!!!! I flew in to Sydney from Kuala Lumpur on the 21st January and spent two weeks travelling up the east coast towards Brisbane, stopping off at Port Stephens, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay and Noosa along the way. Everywhere in Australia seems to be named after one of three things....Back in the 17-1800's I imagine the early explorers who arrived here conquered different towns and decided to name them in one of the following ways: The homesick named them after where they came from in the UK; the arrogant named ... read more

Last night was the first time in nearly two months I had to really pull the blanket up in bed. Still wearing a t-shirt and with a couple of blankets over me it was still chilly. I'm not used to it! Anyway, today I woke up dreading the thought of having to have a cold shower, so I stayed in bed, wrapped up and read a book. Eventually hunger got the better of me, as usual, and I decided I'd better get up for breakfast. To my surprise it was not only a nice day out, but there was hot water in the showers!! Perfect! So, after a long hot shower and a tasty breakfast I headed for the hills. I'd been reliably informed that it was dead easy to navigate round the numbered paths as ... read more

Imagine being a Chinese dyslexic!!? Thankfully I can spel ok, but I imagine dyslexia to be rather frustrating at times. The Chinese alphabet is pretty large so it must be a nightmare being dyslexic in China, and as there are several billion Chinese speakers/readers there must, proportionately, be more dyslexics too? It looks so tough to understand, it might mean you're more likely to struggle with the language anyway.... ...Well, in Malaysia I don't think it's possible to be dyslexic as they spell things as they sound. I got on a bus to KL Sentral. I got off the bus and opposite was a snuker hall, next to a farmasi. And there are many other words that they make less kompleks! (I just can't think of them right now! Knew I should have written them down!) ... read more

The last few weeks I've been pretty busy travelling through south Vietnam and Cambodia. Haven't had a lot of time to keep this blog updated, but hopefully now I can backtrack a bit and get some pictures uploaded. Unfortunately, despite not having much time to upload pictures I decided that today would be a great day to take over 300!! So I've tried to sort the wheat from the chaff and only upload a handful of pictures from today. Someone worked out that I must have been snapping at least one picture a minute at the rate I was going. Obviously many were deleted right after snapping, so I probably took nearer 400 in total, upping my already impressive rate. That would explain why I wasn't in awe of the size of the temples I saw ... read more

Phnom Penh really was an assault on the senses and emotions. Yesterday we did the serious stuff - Choeng Ek Killing Fields followed by the Tuol Sleng (S21) Prison. Although not as graphically 'in your face' as the War Remnants museum in Saigon it used it's vagueness to make you imagine the trauma that went on in these places. I knew very little about the Khmer Rouge and the suffering Cambodia went through before coming here and I still don't fully understand the whys and the hows, but its opened my eyes and I want to find out more. There is actually very little to the Killing Fields. It is simply a 2 hectare site with what look like several bomb craters and signs reading this is where something was. However, the bomb craters were mass ... read more

After yesterday's arrival in Mui Ne and quick tour that afternoon, we deserved another beach break. Today I have been mostly. . . sunbaking!! And as sunbaking is particularly boring at the best of times and I'd finished my book, I wandered the beach pointing my camera at anything that wasn't a grain of sand...... read more

After a difficult few days relaxing in the beach resort of Nha Trang it was time to move onto somewhere even more relaxing....Mui Ne!! OK, so the sand-boarding wasn't so relaxing, but the rest was pretty chilled out! (no pictures of sandboarding though...as there was lots of sand and my camera doesn't like sand! Not to eat, anyway)... read more

My first Christmas away from home, friends and family and cold weather... An unusual experience! With very little in the way of Christmas build up it really didn't feel like Christmas at all! However, a few places in Nha Trang were offering Christmas 'Turkey' dinners so it made sense to partake in the festive meal... Which is pretty much all I did all day. . . Got up late, enjoyed the winter sun and then joined the others at 2pm for a few drinks while nursing the hangover from Christmas Eve and savouring the smells of Christmas dinner as they wafted from the kitchen/bbq towards us, getting hungrier and hungrier! There was almost a fistfight to be first in the queue for the buffet. It may not have looked much like the traditional Christmas dinner I'm ... read more

Well, today I was up early for a trip to My Son, an early Cham site. Much of it was built in the 7th - 11th Centurys but was lost when the Cham moved south. I say lost, I mean, they moved their capital south and never went back to My Son. As My Son is up in the mountains no one ventured up there and so it was left to ruins for many years and found in the early 1900's by the French. Much of it was bombed during the Vietnam war, so there's not a lot left to see, but enough to be fairly interesting. What was most interesting was the Cham built these buildings withought using any mortar or cement. It appears that it was built just by placing brick upon brick, yet ... read more

For those of you who read yesterdays blog and were beginning to think "Oh no, poor Brian, sounds like he's having an awful time", well, today's so much better. Had a bit of a cold yesterday. Still feel a bit rough now, but I'm getting better. Too little sleep and too much fried food was wearing me down. I guess that's why I was a bit hacked off yesterday. Today started well, with pancakes and then a trip on the front of a pedal trike/taxi thing (no idea what it's called!) to the train station. Thankfully I got over the whole tourettes thing and actually said "yes please!" with a smile when the guy asked if I wanted a lift. The train ride from Hue (the e should have an accent, Mum, but I can't find ... read more
