One of the best things about living in Cambodia for a few years is mastering the art of escaping from Phnom Penh to Thailand or Vietnam during the annual Water Festival. Ha! Just kidding...kind-of. We did leave for 3 annual festivals, but our last year in Cambodia, we stayed to enjoy every minute of the jam-packed weekend of fun. It is called "Bom Om Tuk" in Khmer and it is the largest festival in Cambodia. Thousands and thousands of people come to the capital city to celebrate the end of the rainy season, the start of the fishing season, and the time when the flow of the Tonle Sap river actually changes direction! It's a celebratory time and families travel to the city to enjoy the three-day regatta, filled with beautiful hand-crafted racing boats, delicious carnival ... read more

Phnom Tamao wildlife sanctuary is a treasure in Cambodia! It's a great day trip outside of Phnom Penh in a beautiful area on the way to Kep. All the animals have been rescued from abuse or trafficking situations. They are provided medical care and rehabilitated so they can go back out into protected areas within Cambodia. I went out there a few times with Ben and some friends. It's a lot of fun and we learn so much about the animals, Cambodia's struggle to keep traffickers from capturing animals and taking them out of the country to be abused, tortured, and killed (often for "natural" medicinal purposes...you can do more research on the internet). I'd write more, but Lonely Planet says it just as well as I would :)....see their excerpt below (I did add some ... read more

We had fun going through the two blizzards this season! Awesome! The first one was in December 2008 and the second one was Friday, Feb 5, 2010 (with 10 more inches of snow on Wednesday, February 10th!). Wild. This second blizzard, all the schools, government, and offices were closed for6.5 days! It was like a crazy, silent, winter wonderland with no concrete left on the ground...only fields of fluffy white snow....so fun! The piles were so high around our house - up to our waist in some areas where the snow was built up!). We did get a little stir-crazy staying in the house for 6 days straight, so we bundled up and traipsed around for a little while every day. I made it into work a coule of the days, which was so nice because ... read more

If you know me, you know I love food! Frothy fruit drinks, icy sorbets, flavorful ice creams, crusty Italian-style pizzas, fresh and aromatic southeast Asian dishes with basil and lemongrass and spicy peppers, tropical fruits like mangosteen and mango and longans, tasty dips and chips you can't stop eating like hummos and tzatziki, fruit and herb salsas for fresh fish and rare meats. Yummy!! So, of course, one of the best parts of traveling is trying the incredible foods made around the world. During our 3.5 years in Cambodia I was never at a loss for incredible food. All made fresh, mostly organic, made from veggies and meat raised locally. The hardest thing moving back to the U.S. was eating all the insanely fortified, dense, packaged, and fake foods that we have everywhere! One of the ... read more

Ben and I were privileged to travel from Cambodia to the Philippines for an incredible week of exploration. We enjoyed unique sites, thrilling jeepney rides, the most gorgeous beaches, super-adorable tarsiers, fabulous diving, stylish resorts, delicious food, and, of course, many warm and joyful new friends! We spent three days in Manila and then flew down to Bohol to spend another four days at the Ananyana Beach Resort on Panglao Island. We traveled with two of my fellow social workers for a retreat, so while Ben dove most days, I spent time with incredible Filipino and Cambodian social workers, sharing stories, skills, and encouragement. We were only supposed to be in Manila for one day, but since we were travleing during rainy season, a massive storm kept us there for three days. We ended up having ... read more

Wow, we had an amazing holiday in Krabi! NOW I know why people go to Thailand (I have to admit that I am partial to Cambodia & Vietnam)! It was absolutely one of the most beautiful beach areas we have been to. The rock formations, the lush landscapes, the mangrove forests, the beautiful beaches and water...all incredibly gorgeous. I've been really slow putting up these photos...we actually went to Krabi awhile ago - in May2008! But the good memories are still hanging around and I am excited to share these photos with you. The seascape and rock formations were amazing. I really can't emphasize this enough! I'd seen pictures, but didn't really think it would be as beautiful, or that there would be so many (and so huge and different) rock formations out in the water! ... read more

The end of March is a good time to visit Siem Reap...the weather is not too hot yet, the tourists have just left, and hotels are starting to offer great discounts! So, off we went! This was Ben's first adventure north of Phnom Penh (we tend to head south to the beach!). He ended up loving Siem Reap and we had a great time. The weather was perfect, Angkor was magnificent, we met the most awesome tuk tuk driver ever, the hotels were scrumptious and the weekend was utterly relaxing. After the traffic, car exhaust, insane motos, pollution, and general lack of green space in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap was a slow, neat and nature-filled haven! Since we are spoiled kids, we chose to take the 45 minute flight rather than the six hour bus ride. ... read more

Greetings friends! This is "Part 2" of our travel blog. Go back to "Part 1" to read about the start of our trip and our time in Cairo! Nile Cruise When we first arrived in Luxor, we brought all our bags to our Nile cruise boat! We slept on the boat for the 2 days we were in port at Luxor. The boats are 3 and 4 stories tall with about 40-50 rooms. Our room was just like a typical hotel room...pretty roomy and comfortable. It was fun to open our window and be right on the Nile. The waves rocked us to sleep. After touring at Luxor, the tour boat left for Aswan. We cruised all afternoon and overnight. The boat made two stops along the way to Aswan so we could visit the Edfu ... read more

You know you had a good trip to Egypt when, once you return home, you can't stop looking at your photos, you pledge to learn Arabic, you romanticize every aspect of your trip (conveniently forgetting about the crazy tour schedule, the baksheesh obsession, and the horrible plane rides), and you start scheming to see how fast you can get back!! We have been doing all of these things...we had an amazing trip to Egypt! The plane trip to/from Egypt was the worst part. We flew overnight from Phnom Penh to Bangkok to Dubai to Cairo...lots of transfers and 4-5 hour waits at each airport. We were pretty exhausted when we arrived in Egypt. Thankfully, our tour company reserved a room for us at an incredible hotel on the Nile. We rested that afternoon and then ... read more

For a multitude of reasons, we decided we needed a relaxing weekend at the beach! So we called our local Cambodian rental car agency and ordered up the $20 Toyota Camry special. We also decided we wanted a tourist-free weekend, so instead of heading to popular Sihanoukville, we headed to beautiful and peaceful Kep! Kep is a three hour drive Southeast of Phnom Penh and is less than an hours from the Vietnam border. Kep used to be a popular beach retreat for the rich, famous and powerful of Cambodia. The King had a retreat there, fancy casinos entertained visitors, and French colonial style villas lined the beaches. The Khmer Rouge destroyed most of the buildings, turned a gas station into a mass grave, and fighting was rampant in the hills towering over Kep beach. In ... read more
